WHERE WONDER IS AFOOT

From St. George’s to Somerset, trace the early-twentieth-century Bermuda Railway Trail – which contours the island beautifully for 18 miles. Along the way you’ll encounter panoramic ocean views from the peaceful hilltop at Fort Scaur. You’ll cross Somerset Bridge – the world’s smallest working drawbridge (just wide enough for a sailboat mast). And you’ll cross paths with Bermuda cedars, blooming freesias and the stunning, tropically manicured lawns of the locals.

HISTORY SUBMERGED IN MYSTERY

Dating back to the 1600s, more than 300 ships met their untimely demise in Bermuda’s reef-packed waters – earning it the moniker “Shipwreck Capital of the World.” Luckily, what’s treacherous to the ship is treasure to the diver. So suit up and scuba down to discover mystical vessels like Spanish luxury liner Cristobal Colon – the largest known wreck in the area. And the impressively intact Hermes – one of the most photogenic and captivating dive sites.

THE SCENIC SPORT OF LEISURE

Golf is as much the island’s pastime as impeccable service is its standard – and both are deeply embedded in Bermuda’s DNA. Seven striking courses grace the landscape – from the ocean-side cliffs of Port Royal to the secluded peninsula of Riddell’s Bay. You can play like a champion and be treated like one, too. Especially with Golf Around packages that offer complimentary cart rentals, hard-to-get tee times and 50% off club rentals.

SENSORY EXPERIENCES

Head underground to a tangerine salt body glow at Grotto Bay’s Natura Spa. Let a detoxifying herbal wrap work its magic at the Coral Beach & Tennis Club. Or envelop your senses in the fragrances – and flavours – of Elbow Beach’s Rum Swizzle Ritual. Embracing Bermuda’s signature cocktail, this treatment utilises the healing properties of citrus through massages and a full-body scrub. Plus, an indulgent bath – where you’ll relax, Rum Swizzle in hand.

“Bermuda enjoys a vast number of repeat visitors, but it’s not just the beauty. It’s the people. Visiting Bermuda is more than a vacation. It’s an immersion into a community.”

“Fall is my favourite time of the year to play golf. The temperature is in the mid to high 70s . The courses are in great shape, and you can get a round of golf in pretty quickly. I love playing Port Royal.”

“The first time I tried scuba diving, I was amazed at how beautiful and peaceful it was underwater. And that day became the beginning of an awesome journey.”

“Immersing yourself in Bermuda’s beaut y doesn’t require money. Wander th rough Tom Moo re’s Jungle. Go to the secluded beach at Astwood Park. Or stroll through St. George’s for a special experience.”

WELCOME THE PRIVATE JET LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already here. It seems like just the other day we were peeling the wrappers off our new- lookmagazine. Tomark the season, we’ve rounded up some inspirational gifts for you (and your friends and family). Now is a great time to plan a winter vacation and in this issue we have all sorts of suggestions, from a detailed look at the delights of Paris (always magical at this time of year), to ideas on how to get the most from the short but scintillating party scene in Uruguay. For those who prefer to vacation somewhere a little less populated, we also offer a round-up of 10 of the best desert escapes. And at this time of year, it would be remiss not to highlight a top skiing destination, so the irrepressible Minty Clinch explores the thrills of the resorts at Jackson Hole in Wyoming. There’s also our regular look at the world’s top suites, focused this issue on Miami. Plus we meet designer and entrepreneur Viscount Linley. We’re already busy planning for 2016, and we always like to hear your ideas or thoughts on places to visit, so email us at editorial@elitetraveler.com

Object of desire

Monticello humidor

Our first thought when we saw Monticello was “this is the craziest humidor we’ve ever seen”. It’s possibly the maddest humidor conceivable. But our second thought was “we want one”. Designed by Viscount Linley, furniture-maker and chairman of Christie’s (interviewed on page 124), it is fashioned from sycamore, with space for almost 200 cigars and secret drawers for stowing cigar accessories. The house itself is a replica of Monticello, the former home of President Jefferson, but Linley can turn pretty much any building into an exquisite humidor. To date he has created miniature replicas of the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, plus 100 other houses and palaces for customers including Sir Elton John. $75,120, davidlinley.com

Sydney goes boutique

It has been an exciting winter season for Sydney- siders. The harbor city saw a series of new openings, which will appeal to the most discerning clientele. Residents have long bemoaned the absence of real upscale boutique hotels in the city and this season their prayers are answered by not one but two original new places to stay and party. First up is Hotel Palisade, a crafty revamp of a pub, bought by businessman Richard Sapsford for $17m, to protect the heritage architecture of the building. It has been incredibly popular since opening in August and, upstairs, nine bedrooms and a cocktail lounge with harbor views have just opened. It is part of a wave of fancy pub renovations across the city, a trend partly fueled by entrepreneur Justin Hemmes who has demonstrated an appetite among big spenders for laid-back glamour in the form of hotspots The Beresford and Establishment. For something a little more rarified, The Old Clare (pictured), which opened in August, is a sensitive restoration of an old brewery in Chippendale. Its 63 rooms and suites have original timber paneling and exposed brick walls and the sorts of comforts that has made managing group Unlisted (Town Hall Hotel, London; Waterhouse at South Bund, Shanghai) a favorite with travelers who like their hotels understated, but exclusive. As well as a creative cultural program and private gym or yoga sessions, the Old Clare will also have three restaurants, including Michelin-star chef Jason Atherton’s first Australian venue. theoldclarehotel.com.au hotelpalisade.com

DINNER IN THE DOLOMITES

Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna has ventured beyond the realm of fashion to launch Zegna World Pass, a series of superb lifestyle experiences. Our favorites are the private after-hours viewings of artworks, as well as front row seats at Zegna’s fashion shows. GOWESTWOOD

Bella Cool and Le Ti Verbier, Switzerland

For those who buy into the adage that biggest is best, the latest suite to open at The London West Hollywood hotel in Los Angeles should fit the bill. At 11,000 sq ft, it claims to be the largest suite in the city. An even bigger selling point, for fashion lovers at least, is that it was designed by Dame Vivienne Westwood, whose style is referenced throughout. There is hand-drawn tartan decor in the bathroom, a bespoke rug with her iconic squiggles in the lounge and a rough-hewn tapestry that recalls Westwood’s Exploration season in spring/summer 2001. Entry to the penthouse – which comes with water features, two bedrooms, a media room and a kitchen – is by private elevator. It carries guests to the suite’s roof terrace, with a capacity of up to 300 people. Special services for guests include private shopping (including a discount) at the WeHo Vivienne Westwood store. But guests really wanting to channel the designer may have to forego the Westwood- branded bath amenities as the designer is rumored to eschew regular bathing for environmental reasons. From $25,000 per night thelondonwesthollywood.com

Watches

We love… Bremont's limited edition Wright Flyer celebrating its aviation links From $28,000

HERITAGE REVIVAL The British are well known for a love of heritage, but also for claiming to have invented the world. When it comes to watches, there is some truth in such claims. Even Rolex, that most Swiss brand, was founded in London. As Mike France, co-founder of Christopher Ward, one of the UK’s new generation of watch brands says: “Three quarters of important watchmaking developments were born in this country.” The industry has been in decline for decades but recent years have seen a revival. At the forefront of this new generation is skilled artisan, Roger Smith (pictured right). A disciple of legendary watchmaker George Daniels, Smith’s company makes most of the 160 components in each watch by hand, turning out 10 pieces a year. Prices for the RW Smith Series 2 start at $135,000. Another contender is Giles Ellis, founder of the Schofield Watch Company, who has that restless intensity of the classic British amateur engineer but who is deadly serious about watches. The company was, Ellis admits, founded on “passionate enthusiasm”. It draws on the British coast for inspiration, with watches named after lighthouses. Most striking are watches made using a new type of carbon fiber (called Morta) for the case, developed with a British Formula 1 team. "Traditional carbon fiber is rubbish for watch cases, but Morta is about strength rather than being lightweight,” says Ellis. The Blacklamp Carbon starts at $15,500. Pinion was also founded by a designer-turned- watchmaker. Its signature is a series of “new vintage” watches. The Revival 1969 ($7,800) is built around a vintage movement manufactured in 1969, but never assembled. But the biggest name in UK watches is Bremont. Last year, following a long association with aviation, it released the limited edition Bremont Wright Flyer (from $28,000) with the Wright Family Foundation, featuring an in-house movement. The British revival is, it seems, about to take off. rwsmithwatches.com, pinionwatches.com, schofieldwatchcompany.com, bremont.com

IWC Perpetual Calendar is so accurate the moonphase will deviate by only one day in 577.5 years

H. Moser & Cie entered the prestigious Fine Watch Room at Harrods this year

BRAND PROFILE/// GRUEBEL FORSEY

After successful careers with large watch brands, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey founded their boutique company in 2003 having spent four years developing a new tourbillon. Production is limited to 100 watches a year and every watch features their innovative tourbillon work, including double and quadruple tourbillons and the Tourbillon 24 Secondes, set at a 25 degree angle, which completes a full rotation in 24 seconds. Another hallmark is the asymmetrical shape at seven and eight o'clock. It gives the impression that there is too much happening inside the watch to contain the movement in a classic shape. gruebelforsey.com

1 QUANTIÈME PERPÉTUEL À ÉQUATION

This is not just a watch. The dial displays a wealth of features that use all aspects of its bidirectional perpetual calendar. The tourbillon cage and the date dial push gently into the round case. $750,000 2 TOURBILLON 24 SECONDES VISION The focus of the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Vision is on the angled tourbillon, which stands out against the silver-colored dial with enamel hour markers and blue steel hands. $325,000 A hefty watch with a thickness of 16.14 mm, the asymmetrical face has two displays for local and a secondary time zone. It also has a rotating titanium globe to show the time around the world at a glance. $605,000 3 GMT 5N

THE NEWDIALS Blue dials are a trend that seems to be gaining market share each year and almost every watchmaker presented at least one in their latest collection. H. Moser & Cie, the family-owned Swiss business, produces just 1,000 timepieces a year, each one designed and created with in-house movements. This 18-karat white gold, electric blue Endeavour Perpetual Calendar ($60,000, Harrods) makes a strong statement. Many perpetual calendars include multiple subdials to show the technical prowess of the movement, but H. Moser & Cie includes a small second subdial and a power reserve indicator. Frédérique Constant caused a stir when it introduced a new horological smartwatch with a classic analog watch face. More notable is its Manufacture Collection, which includes its most technologically advanced watches, all with in-house movements. The navy-blue dial on the Tourbillon model ($35,500, pictured) has applied silvered indexes for a clean face, all the better to showcase the namesake

Frédérique Constant each tourbillon is individually numbered

tourbillon. All timepieces from the Manufacture Collection are limited in production, this one to 188 pieces. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Portugieser watch family at IWC, which celebrated by creating the new 52000-calibers. The Perpetual Calendar ($42,900, Tourneau) was refreshed with all blue dials. It includes displays for date, month, year and a perpetual moonphase for both hemispheres. The automatic movement is powered by the updated 52615-caliber for even greater accuracy. The handmade black alligator strap was made in collaboration with Italian shoemaker Santoni, and is limited to 250 pieces. harrods.com frederiqueconstant.com tourneau.com

Shear perfection

A rugged suede jacket, luxurious biker jacket or sophisticated peacoat – this season, designers used shearling in a wide array of styles to suit any occasion Tom Ford presented perhaps the perfect jacket for a weekend in the country. A bit retro in styling, but still modern and wearable, the 1970s-inspired tan suede and cream shearling jacket is stylish and ready for adventure. Belstaff, well known for its excellent leather pieces, featured the Reynolds arctic jacket in its collection. The smooth leather is lined and trimmed with cream shearling. The heavyweight jacket looks like it came straight out of a movie. Pair with aviators to channel Top Gun . For a more city-appropriate look, Dior Homme creative director Kris Van Assche presented a riff on new business attire, pairing a luxurious leather biker jacket with removable shearling collar with wide trousers, sweater, shirt and tie. Replacing the blazer with a leather perfecto allows for a more relaxed look. At Louis Vuitton, men’s artistic director Kim Jones showed a shearling peacoat with laser-etched pattern from an original print from Christopher Nemeth’s design archives. The subtle pattern gives visual interest and breaks up what could be a bulky coat, as well as highlighting Vuitton’s incredible craftsmanship and paying homage to one of Jones’s favorite designers and artists.

Color play Scouring the resort collections to find pieces to wear now can be a challenge, but thankfully beautiful furs in rich colors were a standout theme of the season

Designer Jason Wu and Bottega Veneta’s creative director Tomas Maier had winter on their minds when they presented light-pink furs, which will pop against the snow and the inevitable sea of black coats. Maier says he began designing with “an energizing color palette intended to offset the seasonal weather”. The long shearling jacket at Bottega Veneta is collarless, a perfect opportunity to color-block with a turtleneck or accessorize with a contrasting scarf. Wu’s custom-dyed sheared shadow fox is feminine armor for an arctic winter. The sumptuous coat was shown as a monochrome look accessorized with his Diane bag and a belt – both in blossom pink – to enhance the silhouette. Also playing with color were Michael Kors and Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele , who showcased their fur expertise by designing bold, often geometric patterns in their collections. Furrier Pologeorgis makes each coat by hand in a New York studio for Michael Kors. A favorite is the coral, black and caramel hexagon intarsia mink, which takes artisans several days to make. For his second collection for Gucci , Michele staged a runway show in New York and continued with the retro, eccentric direction presented in his fall collection. Alongside the pussy-bow blouses, vintage colors and florals, several vibrant furs walked the runway, including a yellow astrakhan cropped jacket and a showstopper of a blue and red diamond inlay mink coat (pictured). Culture of collaboration

The fashion industry has struggled with cultural appropriation in the past, so the collaboration of Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli with Canadian artist Christi Belcourt is encouraging. Of Métis descent, Belcourt’s art is inspired by the beadwork she saw growing up. Her painting Water Song , on show at the National Gallery of Canada, was incorporated into Valentino’s resort collection. Empress necklace 30 rare Burmese sapphires with 93 carats of diamonds

Art Deco glamour Paul Morelli

A work of art

It took an astonishing 28 years to source the sapphires for this necklace. This is partly because Burmese sapphires as so rare, but also because it is so difficult to find matching stones. Five artisans then spent an astonishing 1,500 hours crafting it. The brainchild of Alfredo J Molina, chairman and CEO of Black, Starr & Frost, America’s first jeweler, the necklace was given the suitably regal name of the Empress when it was released earlier this year. Completely one-of-a-kind, it features 438 diamonds with a 93.17 total carat weight and 111.9 carats of non-heated, natural Burmese sapphires. A true masterpiece. $4.5m, blackstarrfrost.com
