Design

Out of this world

Usually we’d balk at the suggestion of a theme hotel. But we make an exception for the Kameha Grand Hotel in Zürich, in particular for its cutting-edge space suite, which opened in October. Designed by Michael Najjar, who is training to be the first artist to travel to space as one of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic Pioneer Astronauts, the idea behind it is to replicate the atmosphere of a space station. Guests – or crew members as the hotel calls them – are welcomed by a robotic voice inspired by sci-fi film Dark Star and can take part in a flight simulation or body flying experience. Decor is space age themed, with spotlights inspired by rocket engines. Though the best thing is the cantilevered bed, which – if you’ll pardon the pun – is out of this world. From $1,950 for a two-night space suite package. Or $180,400 a night for exclusive use of the hotel. kamehagrandzurich.com
