Tierra Atacama ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE

There is something wonderfully otherworldly about this modern architectural masterpiece, planted in the windswept, lava-sculpted, volcano-dotted landscape of Atacama. The villa is made of glass and rock, ensconced behind a wall that is hundreds of years old (and once served as a cattle corral). The grounds were designed by celebrated Chilean architect, Teresa Moller, but center stage are the views. Take them in from the infinity pool – or better yet, from horseback. The hotel can arrange glorious desert horseback rides on Atacama horses. Standout service The Tierra Ritual treatment at the Uma Spa, which includes an exfoliation with local desert salts and white clay. Afterwards, request a glass of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon (try the Vina Chadwick 2009) and enjoy the views from the spa’s outdoor bathtub that can be filled with goat’s milk, which apparently nourishes the skin. Special amenities Garden filled with indigenous plants such as rica rica, vintage liquors in the hotel’s open bar, map room for planning excursions, full staff including three guides. Room to book It’s a close call between the Pontiente, from which you can see the stunning Salt Mountains from your bathtub, and the Oriente, which comes with an outdoor shower. So we recommend you rent the entire 30-bedroom villa, which sleeps up to 60, for you and your party.
