In the sizzling winter sunshine I follow a group of friends (and a group of particularly hardcore friends at that) through the OFF PISTE

boundaries of the Jackson Hole ski area into pristine wilderness. Our destination is Granite Canyon, 1,000 yards of powder stretching down between rock walls with not a track in sight. Three of my male companions launch, their whoops of joy ricocheting off the golden cliffs. A lone bull moose lifts his head cautiously above the snow – your territory or mine? Savage wilderness and untrodden snowy slopes make Jackson Hole ripe for exploring.
