Al Maha DUBAI DESERT CONSERVATION RESERVE, UAE

Just out of the city, Al Maha (operated by Starwood) is the only resort inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve where oryx and gazelle roam freely. Its size, just 42 villas on a 24,000 sq ft site, makes it feel intimate and secluded, but with just enough Dubai-style pizzazz to attract the likes of Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen, Naomi Campbell, plus Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The focus is on escapism but with local touches – tented rooms are decorated with Bedouin-style rugs and furniture, cultural excursions are encouraged and you’ll find dates and local delicacies in your room each day. Standout service The staff are trained to create unique experiences for guests so they’ll know just the right moment to offer you a private desert buggy ride or a stargazing dinner. Special amenities Each room has its own infinity pool and sunloungers, the restaurant overlooks the haunting landscape and there’s a gym, shop and spa. Room to book The Presidential Suite, built for the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It is 5,700 sq ft and comes with pool, parking, kitchen and handcrafted furnishings. Four Seasons Rancho Encantado SANTA FE COUNTY, US

The vibe at this resort – just 10 minutes from arty Santa Fe by Mercedes Benz transfer – is unassuming but outstanding. The 65 casitas, some in local adobe style, feel elegant but homely while service is exemplary – think local New Mexican wine and s’mores after dinner. Standout service Concierge Antonio Barios is a whiz at elaborate experiences. He can rustle up a hot air balloon trip or backstage tours at the world famous Santa Fe Opera. Special amenities Center for hiking, biking and many activities, pool, spa and a chef’s garden (where you can book a private dinner or learn how to make chicken with cinnamon mole ). Room to book The 1,110-sq ft two-bedroom Summit Suite. Its location at the highest point of the resort gives fantastic views.
