Welcome Do you have a favorite restaurant? Is it one of those stylish, hidden gems or a five-star blockbuster? Are you attracted by a familiarity that allows you to order without a menu, or do you prefer a chef to take you through a new tasting menu? In this issue we unveil the 2016 Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants, which stands out among a plethora of lists because it is voted for by real customers, rather than critics. These are your favorite restaurants from around the world. What is clear is that Chicago’s Alinea remains the readers’ favorite, topping the list for the fifth year in a row. If it was a surprise to see it there in 2011, it heralded the arrival of the US food boom. This year, the US trumps all other countries with more restaurants on the list than anywhere (although France is a close second). Over half of restaurants on the list are in Europe, but there is a trend for great cuisine all over the world. From Brazil to Mexico, Australia to China, these are great times for the lovers of good food. Elsewhere in this issue, there’s all our regular excellent travel tips and advice, with an insider’s guide to Tokyo, itineraries to get the most from the wild and wonderful parts of Patagonia, a round up of the top suites in Dubai and a look at the best way to enjoy the Emerald Isle in luxury. Drop us a note at editorial@elitetraveler.com if there’s a favorite restaurant you think should have made the cut.

Watches

The original La Esmeralda Tourbillon, which won the gold medal at The Universal Exhibition Paris of 1889

STILL A WINNER To mark its 225th anniversary, Girard-Perregaux is releasing a new watch inspired by one of its most important historical timepieces, La Esmeralda Tourbillon. A unique pocket watch with impeccable finishings, patented movement and distinctive good looks, La Esmeralda won the gold medal at The Universal Exhibition Paris of 1889. The three gold bridges and the then-unique decision to make the tourbillon a visual centerpiece, and not just as a part of the movement to regulate precision, marked a turning point in horology. In fact, after the competition in 1889, the watchmaker became a jury member in 1901. Today, the Esmeralda Tourbillon uses an updated version of the patented movement, which makes it one of the oldest watch movements still in production. The display draws direct inspiration from the distinctive double-headed arrow design with three 18K pink gold bridges and includes a 14.3mm tourbillon. The automatic timepiece has a 60-hour power reserve. While not a limited edition, each piece takes two months to assemble, so there is a limited

The Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon showcases Ulysse Nardin’s first wooden dial

BRAND PROFILE ARNOLD & SON

In the 18th century, Englishman John Arnold established himself as a master watchmaker in the court of King George III and became known as one of the most innovative watchmakers of the day, even creating the first timepiece to be called a chronometer. Today, Swiss manufacture Arnold & Son develops and produces every movement in La Chaux-de-Fonds, designing a new movement for each watch. Here are three fabulous new releases. arnoldandson.com

Making waves

1 UTTE Skeleton As the thinnest skeletonized tourbillon on the market, the UTTE Skeleton measures 8.34mm including the two sapphire glasses. Limited to 50 pieces, the skeletonized movement showcases the Côtes de Genève rayonnantes and the chamfered and polished parts. $76,750 2 Nebula Symmetry is important in every Arnold & Son piece, but even more so in the Nebula, which is symmetrical horizontally, vertically and front to back. Ten bridges radiate from the bezel to the center of the watch and form the dial. The two visible barrels, a balance wheel and a small seconds display preserve the symmetry dial-side. $25,750 in red gold 3 Eight-Day Royal Navy The figure eight display, huge power reserve and beautiful guilloché lacquer dial that evokes the ocean’s waves, pay homage to the marine chronometers that King George III commissioned from John Arnold for the Royal Navy. $12,950

One of the most talked about watches at Baselworld this year, Ulysse Nardin’s Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon showcases the company’s maritime history with pioneering, and patented, technology. The face of the watch – Ulysse Nardin’s first wooden dial – is full of nautical references, the most exciting being the replacement of the minute hand with a boom. This moves across the hand-crafted marquetry “deck” using a system of yacht-like pulleys and winches, drawn by a nanowire thinner than a human hair, but stronger than steel. On the hour, the hour jumps and the retrograde movement slowly, over four mesmerizing seconds, returns the boom to zero. During the other 59 minutes and 56 seconds of each hour, there is plenty to marvel at including the translucent blue spinel bridge that indicates the minutes, the 60-second flying tourbillon and shipshape nautical designs. The Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon is made in 18K white gold and with a limited edition of 18 pieces, you’re more likely to see a blue whale in the wild than see one of these for sale. $280,000, ulysse-nardin.com

WEAR IT WITH Classic pieces

To avoid appearing too retro, accessorize with today’s favorite shoe – the sneaker and a structured bag. The classic Adidas Originals Stan Smith sneaker brings a cool twist to any outfit, but we prefer a luxury take. Common Projects is known for its minimalist sneakers and boots, identifiable only by gold printed numbers on the heel. Dolce & Gabbana’s black leather travel bag is perfect for a pulled-together traveling look and doubles up as a relaxed briefcase.

Back to the future The poor button-up short-sleeved shirt has a perhaps well-deserved reputation as being reserved only for geeks with a pocket protector in the top pocket . But this season, designers are freshening up the style by revisiting the 1950s classic bowling shirt and lending it a modern spin. Burberry CEO Christopher Bailey sent the perfect travel outfit down the runway. A button-up shirt and trousers in cashmere, you can look pulled together but stay extremely comfortable. And perhaps the best part, each piece is smart enough to be worn on its own, helping cut down on packing. Dries Van Noten took inspiration from the 20th century’s

most creative forces, including Salvador Dalí, Elsa Schiaparelli, Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol. Monroe’s face underwent both a Dalí and a Warhol treatment, with her face or just parts of her face, splashed throughout the collection. Tropical plants and crustaceans also appeared, including the embellished shirt worn with high-waisted, voluminous pants. While Lanvin womenswear is in slight turmoil after the departure of beloved designer Alber Elbaz, menswear remains steady under the hand of Lucas Ossendrijver. He gave us one of the more literal bowling shirts we saw this season, with retro collar and stripes, and we love it.

Women’s style Brooding beauty A precursor to the next season’s gothic tendency, the pre-fall collections were full of dramatic prints and patterns worn head-to-toe. The deeper colors hint at a dark romance and a long silhouette adds even more drama, as seen at Altuzarra, Erdem, Giorgio Armani and Roberto Cavalli

For his first pre-fall collection at Roberto Cavalli, creative director Peter Dundas revisited the late 1960s and early 1970s and presented his version of a bohemian rock star. Beaded dresses, animal prints and other Roberto Cavalli signatures appeared throughout the collection. A top pick is this long-sleeved dress with a lace-up front in a beautiful baroque print.

Designer ErdemMoralioglu is no stranger to a floral print. His collections are perennial fashion editor favorites. His pieces are instantly recognizable, but never repetitive. Inspired by the fashions of the upper class women of the Edwardian era, signatures such as lace and feathers also appeared alongside the various florals. The black bows and loose silhouette keep this blue gown from becoming too sweet.

Many of designer Joseph Altuzarra’s pieces featured oversized, multicolored paillettes, perfect for a party or the red carpet. Translated into an asymmetrical dot print, the same collection is suitable for everyday. Mixing both, the printed gown retains the glamour of the paillettes, but would be just as at home on a beach as at a gala.

Called Bohemian Rhapsody, Giorgio Armani’s collection showed florals, wild fringe coats and some seriously playful suiting. A watercolor floral appeared throughout the collection, with black borders toughening up the print. Totally on trend pleating also made an appearance. Here, Mr Armani mixes pleats, prints and a touch of the fine tailoring for which he is so famous.

Garden of delights

Lydia Courteille ring, $10,800

Inspired by lush gardens teeming with flowers and insects, fine jewelry designers have been showcasing their craftsmanship and ingenuity . The collection Incroyables et Merveilleuses (incredible and marvelous) from creative director of Dior Fine Jewelry Victoire de Castellane, is inspired by Christian Dior’s garden at Milly-la-Fôret. These 18K yellow gold earrings are from the Fruit collection and have two pear-shaped morganite center stones weighing 42.16 carats that hang from the branches of a blossoming tree. Roberto Coin is also using morganite as a centerpiece. This cocktail ring from his Garden collection features a 20-carat morganite stone and is surrounded by gem-set flowers, leaves and creatures including a dragonfly, millipede, caterpillar and ladybug. Lydia Courteille describes her Paris boutique as a “cabinet of curiosities”.

This 18K pink gold ring with roses carved from pink opals, on which tiny dragonflies set with pink sapphires and white diamonds rest, is one of her more tame pieces, but the black diamond leaves add a touch of mystery. Fabergé’s Secret Garden 18K white gold chandelier earrings are intricately set with a host of colored, precious gems, including 11.65 carats Gemfields emeralds and 12.72 carats of pink,

purple and yellow sapphires. Family- run Italian jeweler Pasquale Bruni’s Giardini Segreti (secret gardens) collection focuses on delicate leaves that are so graceful they could be mistaken for a butterfly in flight. The 18K rose gold bracelet has jade, green agate, tsavorite and diamonds. dior.com, faberge.com, lydiacourteille.com, pasqualebruni.com, robertocoin.com

Bulgari high jewelry necklace, price on request

Sinuous beauties

Favored by fascinating women from Cleopatra to Queen Victoria, the serpent remains an enduring symbol of eternal love, passion and desire . Sexy and sensual, coiling around wrists and slithering across collarbones, it is no surprise that jewelers continue to revisit the serpent. Bulgari’s first Serpenti collection was created in 1940 and has become inherently linked to the house’s identity. Most iconic are the coiled cuffs and necklaces. This year there is a new version of the Serpenti. The first piece is a stunning platinum, high jewelry necklace set with 15.37 carats of white diamonds and 35.42 carats of emeralds, with a diamond-encrusted snakehead with hypnotic, emerald eyes. After redesigning both the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele has turned his attention to fine jewelry. The Marché des Merveilles (market of wonders) collection includes flowers, bees and snakes. We love the made-to-order 18K white gold snake rings with green topaz and tourmalines. While not necessarily known for serpent jewelry, Jacob & Co and Graff Diamonds have beautiful pieces this year. First shown at Baselworld, Graff's Serpentine diamond secret watch conceals a dial under a 5.64-carat rose-cut diamond, contributing to the watch's staggering total of 100.92 carats of white diamonds. Pairing 13.5mmAustralian South Sea pearls with green tsavorites is unexpected, but a beautiful combination in Jacob & Co’s snake earrings. bulgari.com, graffdiamonds.com, gucci.com, jacobandco.com

CELEBRATING A CENTURY To celebrate the 100th birthday of an Italian motoring legend Ferruccio Lamborghini, founder of the eponymous car brand, the firm is launching its most extreme supercar. The Lamborghini Centenario was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show and will be the most powerful Lamborghini to date, with the engine from the Aventador (a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12) tweaked to push out 759bhp, with maximum revs ramped to 8,600rpm. Despite its good looks, the engineers claim the Centenario was designed with function ahead of form (the principle function being downforce). And that grip will be needed with a 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217mph. Only 40 are being made, and all are sold, so you’ll have to pay a lot more than the $2.3m asking price to get your hands on one. From$2.3m, lamborghini.com

DB HEAVEN It isn’t every day Aston Martin unveils a new car. In fact, the flagship DB (the DB9) is 13 years old. So, it’s surprising to write about two at once. The AM-RB 001 marks the start of a partnership with the Red Bull F1 team. Designed in collaboration with Red Bull’s Adrian Newey, the AM-RB 001 combines Red Bull’s F1 technology with Aston Martin’s sports car expertise to create a road-going hypercar. The price will be between $2.8m and $4.2m. The DB11, unveiled at the International Geneva Motor Show, marks a big shift in terms of design and build. It is built around a new 5.2-liter, twin-turbo V12 that generates 600bhp and 700Nm of torque, sending it from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 200mph. There is a new chassis, suspension, steering and electronics. The cabin is full Aston Martin style. DB11, $219,995, astonmartin.com

SUPERCAR COFFEE MORNING The UK’s most influential luxury car show, Salon Privé, is extending its run at Blenheim Palace with a series of Cars & Coffee meets throughout the summer. Each event will be themed, with a Supercar Sunday kicking things off, followed by an event for classics from the 1960s and 1970s, with the final event using the rather looser heading of Speed & Style. Set in East Courtyard at the World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, the meetings will be open to all car enthusiasts, although the participants will be carefully selected to be best-of-breed cars, ensuring a mouth-watering display for all visitors. Owners of exceptional cars are invited to apply for a coveted space on each of the days. blenheimpalace.com

ALL THE RIGHT NOISES Audi’s Q7 has long been a major player in the luxury SUV category, currently the hottest part of the car market. But it has upped the stakes

with the launch of the SQ7. The new engine is a belter. It is a redesigned V8 bi-turbo diesel, generating 435bhp and 900Nm of torque. An electrically powered compressor – a world first for a production car – allows the SQ7 to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. There is a lot of clever tech tied into the exhaust system, but most owners will love that there is a sound actuator in the exhaust system that will amplify the already impressive eight-cylinder sound. Make some noise boys. audi.com
