MEET THE ZOREL FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
Meet Rachel and Leeor Zorel, high school sweethearts, local business owners, and parents of four, living in South Orange since 2011. Their children, Shaya (17), Ami (15), Matai (13), and Ozzie (11), are at the center of a life that balances Rachel’s design agency and Leeor’s construction company with the joys and challenges of parenting. With the kids attending Golda Och Academy and summers spent at Camp Ramah in Palmer, Massachusetts, the family is deeply rooted in both the South Orange community and their Jewish heritage. “There’s never a dull moment in our house, and every day is a bit different,” Rachel says. “Between soccer, softball, art classes, basketball, and running our businesses, there’s an organized chaos that keeps us moving in many directions. With four kids, two businesses, and family close by, we feel incredibly grateful to be living in such a special place and community.” Their story began in high school, when Rachel was a sophomore and Leeor was a senior. They married at 23 and 25, and when it came time to choose a last name, they wanted something original. “None of the conventional choices felt right,” Rachel explains. “So we blended our original names together and created Zorel.” Today, they run their businesses from the second floor of a historic building they recently purchased on Vose Avenue, with the intention of adding vibrancy to the heart of downtown South Orange. Leeor leads The Zorel Group, a residential construction company known across Essex County for building and remodeling homes with distinctive character and fine craftsmanship.

“I spent about a decade in commercial construction, working on both the subcontractor and general contractor sides,” Leeor explains. “While I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot, I became increasingly passionate about residential work—drawn to working with clients on a more personal level and intrigued by the creative possibilities. I was considering joining a residential firm when my wife encouraged me to start my own business locally. What better area than Essex County, and what better timing than with three kids under five and a fourth on the way?!” Rachel leads 7 Layer Studio, a creative agency delivering design and strategy for ambitious brands. Empowered by a long line of entrepreneurs, she started as Zorel Design in 2004, leaving her agency job to set out on her own. “The early years were filled with bold leaps and ‘why nots’ — a mentality that’s foundational to our work even today,” she reflects. Over the years, she skillfully grew the business while navigating parenthood and moves from NYC to Hoboken to South Orange, officially becoming 7 Layer Studio in 2017. “I love working in a community that supports and encourages creativity and collaborative entrepreneurship,” she says. “There’s something special about being part of a network where local businesses lift each other up, and South Orange has provided exactly that environment for us to grow.” The agency’s community roots run deep: 7 Layer Studio is behind beloved local brands including Liv Breads, Wildly, Neighbors Wine Shop, Far Brook School, and Soma Sweets, building brands that move people and culture. The Zorel family is deeply embedded in the community, both as a large, lively household and as established business owners. Their story is one of love, adventure, and unparalleled time management that allows their family to grow and thrive.

As a fellow mom, I know grocery shopping can feel overwhelming, especially while juggling a list, a cart, and maybe toddlers. However, grocery shopping lays the groundwork for making healthy choices every day. It’s not just a chore; it sets the stage for breakfast, balanced snacks, and quick meals. What you put in your cart directly influences what you serve for dinner, pack in your kid’s lunch, and put on your plate. An intentional shopping trip can be a game-changer. Here’s the secret: prioritize yourself on your grocery list. I know it sounds novel since we often put everyone else first, but a mom running on empty cannot pour from a depleted cup. Your health forms the foundation of your family’s well-being. During back-to-school season, lean into convenient, nutrition-packed choices. Consider salad kits, frozen veggies, pre-chopped blends, lean deli meat, frozen fish, pre-marinated proteins, and canned beans as healthy shortcuts for chaotic schedules. Apply this to your needs. Add your preferred items for a quick lunch that requires no cooking. Buy a smoothie mix or quality granola for a fast, nutritious breakfast. Choosing items that support your energy and health HEALTH & WELLNESS
isn’t selfish; it benefits everyone around you. When you care for yourself, you can show up as your best self. Next time you shop, prioritize yourself, even with just one or two items. It can make a world of difference. Need a streamlined approach to grocery shopping or meal planning? Scan the QR code for my guide to groceries.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
BUFFALO CHICKEN SLIDERS Prep Time: 30 mins • Cook Time: 40 mins Yield: 18 sliders All of your favorite classic wing flavors are sandwiched inside a mini brioche bun in these Buffalo chicken sliders. Tangy, spicy shredded chicken, crunchy lettuce, and creamy blue cheese… bring on the tailgate because these are a touchdown!
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place the chicken, stock, water and salt in a large covered saucepan and bring to a simmer. Reduce to a bare simmer and simmer until the chicken is cooked though, about 20 mins. 2. Remove the chicken to a plate and pull apart with two forks or your hands when cool enough to handle. BUFFALO SAUCE Whisk together all of the ingredients for the Buffalo sauce in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 2-3 mins. and set aside. BLUE CHEESE SPREAD Whisk together all of the ingredients for the blue cheese spread and set aside. TO SERVE 1. Add the pulled chicken to the Buffalo sauce and simmer over low heat, covered, for 20 mins. 2. Spilt the slider buns and pile with the pulled Buffalo chicken, shredded lettuce and a dollop of the blue cheese spread smeared on the top bun.
RECIPE NOTES • When you’re poaching the chicken, watch to be sure that the chicken remains tender and doesn’t become rubbery. A very low heat works best and you can even turn off the heat entirely after about 10 mins. Just leave the chicken in the covered pot. Test one chicken breast to see if it is cooked through before removing to a bowl to cool. • These sliders are perfect party food because they are easily made ahead. Keep the Buffalo chicken, sauce, and lettuce separate and put the sandwiches together just before serving. • If you don’t want to make all the sandwiches, you can instead create a self-serve station. Keep the Buffalo chicken warm and serve alongside the split buns, shredded lettuce, and blue cheese sauce and allow guests to help themselves.
INGREDIENTS
2 lbs boneless, skinless, chicken breasts 2 cups chicken stock 2 cups water 1 tsp kosher salt 3 cups Romaine lettuce, shredded 18 slider buns, preferable brioche BUFFALO SAUCE 4 oz unsalted butter, melted (1 stick) 1½ Tbsp light brown sugar 1 tsp garlic salt 1 tsp sweet paprika
2 tsp white vinegar ½ cup Franks RedHot Sauce 2 Tbsp sriracha sauce Salt and pepper to taste BLUE CHEESE SPREAD ½ cup crumbled blue cheese 1/4 cup creme fraiche ⅓ cup mayonnaise 2 Tbsp buttermilk Salt and pepper to taste

REAL ESTATE HOME SELLING MYTHS
Well-Being That Works.
Myth #1: “I’ll wait until spring.” The Spring Market kicks off in January when inventory is low and buyer demand is high. Myth #2: “I’ll price high so I can come down.” Overpricing doesn’t create room to negotiate—it scares off buyers entirely. The longer your home sits, the less attractive it becomes. Myth #3: “I need to renovate everything first.” Not all updates pay off. Focus on high-impact, low-cost improvements like fresh paint, deep cleaning, and small repairs. Myth #4: “Buyers can look past clutter.” They can’t—and they won’t. A clean, staged home photographs better, shows better and sells faster. Myth #5: “Cash buyers are always the best.” Cash can mean speed, but not always the best price. The strongest offer is a combination of price, terms, and reliability. Myth #6: “Waiting longer will always get you a better price.” Homes that sit on the market for too long can actually see lower offers, as buyers may become wary. Don’t gamble with myths. Call me if you would like to know what your home is worth and let’s get it SOLD!

HOME DESIGN “So, what’s biophilic design all about? One of my clients asked me about it,” said my realtor partner Kim. We were sitting in our favorite place, Village Coffee in Maplewood. “Well, if you want a really good comprehensive explanation, I can email you a paper by the Terrapin Bright Green group called the 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design.” “Maybe you can just give the Soma Living Magazine version,” she grumbled. “Okay,” I chuckled, “Basically, biophilic design is the practice of bringing nature indoors and, through thoughtful design choices, connecting people to the outdoors.” “Like?” she asked. “Lots of ways! You can start by maximizing natural light. Use sheer curtains on your windows. If you’re renovating a space, use larger windows—hopefully in a position with a view of nature. You can also add a skylight or sliding glass doors.” “That would give you a lot of light and bigger views to the outside,” she added.
“And, of course, using natural elements like wood or stone and painting with natural colors all helps create an environment that mimics the outside world,” I responded. “Hey, didn’t you do all that to the kitchen in the Wyoming house?” she asked. “Yeah, we did a Taj Mahal quartzite countertop, a travertine backsplash, wood cabinets, hardwood floors, and a nice neutral color on the walls,” I said. (See picture in the ad.) I added, “Incorporating biophilic design can transform a home into a calming, restorative space. Humans evolved in nature, and now we live in a man-made built environment. It’s time to add a little nature to our lives—even if that’s only adding a few plants around the house.”

INTERIOR DESIGN After a month in the hospital, I’m home… and as you know, there’s no place like it. My body is tired, my spirit is tender, but being surrounded by beauty… real, personal, intentional beauty…makes all the difference. While I’ve been going through leukemia treatment I’ve found that I’ve really needed more symbols of strength and resilience around me. We all know that design inspiration can come from ANYWHERE... but the best designs come from the heart. When you’re choosing pieces for your home, don’t just ask “Is this beautiful?” Ask, “Does this stir something inside me? Does this remind me of who I am, or who I’m becoming?” For example, the timing of my bone marrow transplant felt cosmically aligned. It happened on
August 8th… Lions Gate Portal Day… a moment said to open energy for transformation and power. I decided to let this inspire the design in my hospital room. I added lion heads throughout my space, not to be loud or roaring… but to be there quietly strong and mighty. Another source of inner fire for me? Frida Kahlo. I’ve always had portraits of her in my home, but she represents more than just art now - she represents a ferocity to create, be herself, and live wildly - even with physical limitations. Her portraits are now more than just art to me. They represent a deep fierceness that lives inside us all, just waiting to be awakened. So remember, design isn’t just about how a space looks—it’s about how it wraps around you, when you need it most.

POWER OF SLEEP As we explore sleep needs throughout our lives, we focus on adolescence, a time filled with two major sleep challenges. The first challenge stems from changes in a teen’s circadian rhythm. Young children often feel tired by 9 PM, driven by their internal clocks. However, during puberty, the suprachiasmatic nucleus shifts this clock, leading the average 16-year-old to experience peak wakefulness around 9 PM. In many cases, they won’t transition to sleep until 11 PM or midnight. If you feel frustrated when your teen resists bedtime, remember this: asking them to sleep at 10 PM is like expecting you to sleep at 7 PM! No matter how much you wish for their slumber, their brains simply aren’t ready. Society’s failure to recognize the realities of a teenager’s circadian rhythm creates the second challenge: early
school start times. Expecting teens to wake up energic at 7 AM resembles asking adults to get up at 4 AM. Parents must acknowledge this reality: teenagers require more sleep than adults and need to obtain it at different times. Fortunately, this phase is temporary, and they will eventually adjust. Bryan Umiker is the Founder & Owner of the Ethical Mattress Company and a Maplewood resident since 2001. He has over 20 years of experience in the sleep industry, including roles as a Buyer and Vice President for Bloomingdale’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Casper.

Join the Community Coalition on Race for an inspiring evening at their annual gala on Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. The event takes place at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club and celebrates the mission of building a racially, culturally, and socially integrated community. This year, the Coalition will honor Audrey Rowe, who served as program director for 23 years. Audrey developed innovative programs that advanced the Coalition’s goals and mobilized many volunteers to help bring these initiatives to life. “This work not only enriched our community but also brought us closer together,” she stated. The evening will also feature a special memorial tribute to Carol Barry-Austin, a founding trustee who demonstrated unwavering leadership for over 28 years. Carol advocated for equity in schools, fighting for reduced academic tracking and greater support for students of color. Her mentorship of trustees, executive directors, and volunteers significantly influenced the Coalition’s growth and impact. Attendees can enjoy live music from the Essex Funk Collective, along with a cocktail hour, dinner, and a spirited auction. Tickets and sponsorship information are available at communitycoalitiononrace.org. October holds special meaning for the townships of Maplewood and South Orange, as they recognize it as Coalition Month. The Coalition also invites the community to a public forum focused on school integration initiatives. FINANCIAL FOCUS INVESTING WITH HEART: FIND A FINANCIAL ADVISOR WHO SHARES YOUR VALUES Managing your money goes beyond the bottom line. For many, investing ensures their dollars support charitable causes and values. Whether you care about sustainability, faith, or community, a financial advisor who understands your priorities can help you build a meaningful portfolio. Here’s how to find the right fit. Know What You Stand For Reflect on your values before searching for a financial advisor. Are you passionate about sustainability? Do you want to avoid companies that conflict with your faith? Create a list of your top priorities to simplify the search for an advisor who respects your vision. Do Your Homework After clarifying your goals, look for advisors specializing in values-based investing. Use keywords like “socially responsible investing,” “faith-based investing,” or “ESG” during your search. Review their credentials to find those experienced in sustainable funds or philanthropic planning. Ask the Right Questions Narrow your list and schedule introductory discussions, either in person or remotely. Inquire about their investment strategies: - Do they offer portfolios focused on ESG or faith-based filters? - Have they worked with clients sharing similar values? - How do they approach charitable giving strategies? Pay attention to whether they show genuine interest in your values. Also, consider their communication style. Trust Your Instincts Choosing a financial advisor is personal. Beyond qualifications, find someone who listens and respects your goals. Meet several advisors before deciding. The right person will support your values throughout your financial journey.

FROM THE DOCTOR Poor Posture and Brittle Bones: From Natural Curve to Permanent Hump Certain types of kyphosis result from a slow shift over decades, often preventable with the right habits. Age and posture both play significant roles in kyphosis, leading to different outcomes. Poor posture, such as hunching over your phone or slouching in a chair, causes postural kyphosis. This version often affects younger adults and teens, stemming from muscle imbalances and repetitive positioning. As you age, age-related kyphosis takes over. This form results from physical damage to the spine; particularly tiny fractures linked to osteoporosis. Unlike postural rounding, which often corrects by standing straight, hyperkyphosis remains even when you try to adjust your posture. Posture-related kyphosis is usually fixable. If muscle weakness or prolonged sitting leads to your curved back, you can reverse it by strengthening your upper back and core, stretching tight areas like your chest and hip flexors, and practicing good posture during daily activities. Structural kyphosis poses more challenges, typically linked to significant bone loss. These fractures arise from osteoporosis, causing fragile bones that compress under everyday stress. This type does not correct with good posture, may accompany back pain or stiffness, entail noticeable height loss, and increases your risk of further spine damage. Key signs to watch for include loss of height, a forward curving back despite efforts to stand tall, ongoing back pain or stiffness, and difficulty in twisting, bending, or maintaining an upright position. Consider a chiropractic postural evaluation for current issues and preventive measures. We provide guidance on whether your case involves chiropractic care.

FROM THE DOCTOR September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month: How Physical Therapy Supports Those Living with Sickle Cell Disease Every September, we recognize National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, which highlights a complex condition affecting over 100,000 people in the United States. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells become rigid and crescent-shaped, blocking blood flow and causing painful episodes known as vaso occlusive crises. While many understand the medical challenges of SCD, fewer know how physical therapy can greatly improve life quality for those living with this condition. • Frequent pain episodes, especially in the back, joints, and long bones • Reduced mobility due to joint damage or chronic pain • Muscle weakness from inactivity during hospitalizations or crises • Fatigue from anemia and chronic inflammation • Postural changes from altered movement patterns to avoid pain These challenges often lead to loss of independence and decreased participation in work, school, and community activities. As movement experts, physical therapists serve as partners in pain management, mobility restoration, and improving quality of life. Our treatment approach tailors to each patient’s unique needs, including pain-relieving modalities, joint protection and mobility training, strength and endurance building, energy conservation strategies, and posture and gait training. September’s National Sickle Cell Awareness Month reminds us that awareness must accompany action. Let’s empower those with SCD to stay mobile, manage pain, and live life fully, showing that guided movement can be a powerful medicine. SCD impacts nearly every aspect of a person’s physical well-being. Individuals may experience:

As the back-to-school season approaches, many children feel excitement mixed with anxiety. New classrooms, changing routines, and social pressures can overwhelm kids, especially those who already struggle with worry. Anxiety often manifests as stomachaches, sleep issues, meltdowns, or withdrawal. Fortunately, kids can build lifelong skills to manage these feelings with the right support. Dr. Dana Rhule, a licensed child psychologist with over 20 years of experience, offers several tips for families: 1. Establish predictable routines: Consistent sleep, meals, and morning practices help children feel secure and in control. 2. Normalize their feelings: Start by listening and providing empathy. Dr. Rhule suggests, “It’s okay to feel nervous. I used to get nervous starting a new year too!” 3. Practice coping strategies: Children take cues from adults. Show them deep breathing and positive self-talk. Dr. Rhule notes, “Model the behavior. Say, ‘I feel worried right now. I’m going to take a deep breath and remind myself that I can do it!’” FROM THE DOCTOR
4. Practice the first day: Visit the school, meet the teacher, or walk through the schedule to help children feel familiar with their environment. 5. Convey confidence: Kids sense adult anxiety. Show your belief in their abilities. Remind them of past successes and how they overcame fears. For children needing extra support, Dr. Dana offers consultations, workshops, and after-school programs. Learn more at drdanarhule.com.

What started as a friendship between two local moms has blossomed into one of Maplewood and South Orange’s most vibrant social experiences. Friends since their children’s preschool days, Jara Radom and Melanie Finnern reconnected years later over their shared love of Mahjong. After taking lessons and attending open plays together in Summit, they thought, “Why not bring the same joy, strategy, and connection home to SOMA?” From that spark, Mahjongistas was born. At its core, Mahjongistas goes beyond learning a game; it creates a space for women to laugh, strategize, and connect. Mahjong, an engaging centuries-old game of skill and luck, provides the perfect backdrop for friends to gather. Jara states, “We wanted to create a community where women can come together, have fun, and support each other.” MAHJONGISTAS MAHJONGISTAS: CONNECTING WOMEN, ONE TILE AT A TIME
Since launching in March, Mahjongistas has welcomed over 100 women to its signature event, The Mahjong Mixer, a monthly gathering at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club. Each mixer caters to everyone, whether you’re new and want a lesson or already hooked and ready for open play. Jara, a trained Mahjong teacher, shares her expertise during lessons, while Melanie ensures every detail feels thoughtful, welcoming, and fun. They’ve fostered a community that’s both warm and dynamic. The next Mahjong Mixer takes place on September 11, with small group lessons available for a more intimate introduction. Follow @Mahjongistas on Instagram to join the fun and connect with this growing community!

My name is Haley Esperanzate. I am a 5th grader at Seth Boyden Elementary School. I love to read, write, draw, and enjoy many other hobbies. I have been living in Maplewood since 2021. I am excited to write this column about my life here in the SOMA community as a 10-year-old. I want to share all the great things for kids to see and do in this wonderful place. For starters, the moment I moved here, everyone welcomed me and my mom with open arms. They were all so nice and prepared to welcome us! Neighbors even brought us cookies! When I started school at Seth Boyden, I first met all my friends on Zoom. They accepted me from the start and introduced me to the school. Another thing I love about SOMA is the amazing food places! In downtown Maplewood, there are awesome restaurants and cafes like Outer Borough and The Village Trattoria. There’s also a wonderful bakery called Able Baker! They make some of the best sweet treats in Maplewood. My family loves hanging out at Artie’s and now Pallet, where my mom is a bartender. In South Orange, you can find Tito’s Burritos, Mozzarella, Bunny’s, and so much more! Lastly, I adore all the homes in South Orange and Maplewood. They are so cozy and beautiful! Some of them look like cottages. They are all made beautifully, and it feels like I am surrounded by houses straight out of Disney princess movies. Since we’re on the topic of houses, my dream job when I grow up is to be a real estate agent. I am so glad I get to share my thoughts about SOMA in this magazine, and I look forward to writing about other great things in the SOMA community! STUDIO TOUR SOMA
South Orange / Maplewood Artist’s Studio Tour: 22nd Year Celebration Mark your calendars for November 1 and 2, 2025, as the 22nd Annual Studio Tour SOMA invites art lovers to explore the vibrant artistic community of South Orange and Maplewood. “This self-guided tour showcases the incredible talent of over 100 professional and emerging artists,” says Oksana Berzinsh, the event coordinator.
Visitors will discover multiple-artist venues, including the Parlor at the Woodland and the Dehart Community Center in Maplewood, as well as the Loft at SOPAC and the Skate House in South Orange. “Engaging directly with artists creates meaningful connections that enrich our community,” Oksana emphasizes. Before the tour, attendees can experience the “Unveiled 25” preview exhibition at the Herb + Milly Iris Gallery, featuring works by over 60 select artists from the tour. The exhibition runs from September 11 to November 1, 2025, and presents an excellent opportunity for visitors to get a glimpse of the artistic talent on display. Oksana also highlights the collaborative outreach program with Columbia High School, which this year awarded the Pat Bell Scholarship to three promising students: Claire Hirsh, Saanvi Rohtgi, and Olivia Welch. “We are committed to supporting the next generation of artists,” she notes. As the Studio Tour SOMA celebrates over two decades of artistic richness, Oksana invites everyone to join the festivities as sponsors, volunteers, or visitors, saying, “Your participation strengthens the cultural tapestry of our communities.” For more details, visit [studiotoursoma.com](https://studiotoursoma.com/meet-the-artists/).
