SOMA Living September 2025
What started as a friendship between two local moms has blossomed into one of Maplewood and South Orange’s most vibrant social experiences. Friends since their children’s preschool days, Jara Radom and Melanie Finnern reconnected years later over their shared love of Mahjong. After taking lessons and attending open plays together in Summit, they thought, “Why not bring the same joy, strategy, and connection home to SOMA?” From that spark, Mahjongistas was born. At its core, Mahjongistas goes beyond learning a game; it creates a space for women to laugh, strategize, and connect. Mahjong, an engaging centuries-old game of skill and luck, provides the perfect backdrop for friends to gather. Jara states, “We wanted to create a community where women can come together, have fun, and support each other.” MAHJONGISTAS MAHJONGISTAS: CONNECTING WOMEN, ONE TILE AT A TIME
Since launching in March, Mahjongistas has welcomed over 100 women to its signature event, The Mahjong Mixer, a monthly gathering at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club. Each mixer caters to everyone, whether you’re new and want a lesson or already hooked and ready for open play. Jara, a trained Mahjong teacher, shares her expertise during lessons, while Melanie ensures every detail feels thoughtful, welcoming, and fun. They’ve fostered a community that’s both warm and dynamic. The next Mahjong Mixer takes place on September 11, with small group lessons available for a more intimate introduction. Follow @Mahjongistas on Instagram to join the fun and connect with this growing community!
