FROM THE DOCTOR Poor Posture and Brittle Bones: From Natural Curve to Permanent Hump Certain types of kyphosis result from a slow shift over decades, often preventable with the right habits. Age and posture both play significant roles in kyphosis, leading to different outcomes. Poor posture, such as hunching over your phone or slouching in a chair, causes postural kyphosis. This version often affects younger adults and teens, stemming from muscle imbalances and repetitive positioning. As you age, age-related kyphosis takes over. This form results from physical damage to the spine; particularly tiny fractures linked to osteoporosis. Unlike postural rounding, which often corrects by standing straight, hyperkyphosis remains even when you try to adjust your posture. Posture-related kyphosis is usually fixable. If muscle weakness or prolonged sitting leads to your curved back, you can reverse it by strengthening your upper back and core, stretching tight areas like your chest and hip flexors, and practicing good posture during daily activities. Structural kyphosis poses more challenges, typically linked to significant bone loss. These fractures arise from osteoporosis, causing fragile bones that compress under everyday stress. This type does not correct with good posture, may accompany back pain or stiffness, entail noticeable height loss, and increases your risk of further spine damage. Key signs to watch for include loss of height, a forward curving back despite efforts to stand tall, ongoing back pain or stiffness, and difficulty in twisting, bending, or maintaining an upright position. Consider a chiropractic postural evaluation for current issues and preventive measures. We provide guidance on whether your case involves chiropractic care.
