If you’re looking for somewhere to explore, relax, or have a new adventure this year, you’ve come to the right place! West Michigan is full of outdoor destinations to explore, new flavors to sample, and memories ready to be made. It’s the perfect time to try something new, and take the path less traveled as you explore the area. Take an excursion on the tall ship at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven. Learn to luge at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. Tour through history, and play a game of baggataway at Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City. Drive through Paradise to explore the historic Coast Guard station and lighthouse at Whitefish Point. Many travel destinations have worked hard to reinvent themselves over the past year, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead and double check hours and availability. Plan to build some extra time into your trips, and make sure to be kind to those who are working hard to help visitors have a great experience. You’l l find all types of places to visit as you explore West Michigan in this copy of the Carefree Travel Guide , and the most up-to-date info at WMTA.org.

#WestMichigan | 2022 Carefree Travel Guide

There’s nothing like the charm of a small town to instantly make you feel right at home. West Michigan is full of these cities, villages, and towns ready to welcome you to explore their best restaurants, culture, shopping, and hidden gems.

Small Towns

City of Hastings City of Zeeland

One sure-fire way to find the best food, lodging, or

experiences anywhere you visit is to chat with the locals. They love where they live, and are excited to share their hometown with visitors. A great way to connect with locals is to stop by the area Visitors Center or Chamber of Commerce. You’ll find staff there who can’t wait to fill you in on the best things to do in the area! If you’re still in the planning stages of your trip, give them a call or check out their website to find out some of their favorite recommendations for first-time visitors to their town. These are also great resources to check for any special events, festivals, or parades that might be happening during your visit. You can browse our list of these local resources at WMTA.org/area-info.

Sparta: You’ll find festivals & events for everyone to enjoy, with concerts, Celtic festivals, seasonal celebrations, and more. White Lake Area: Check out the World’s Largest Weathervane in downtown Montague, plus local shopping and dining. Zeeland: Zeeland has a full calendar of events year round, ranging from evening group bike rides to an all-day chalk festival. Lowell: Visit the Lowell Showboat, which has been a historic icon of the Greater Lowell Community since 1931. Newaygo: Enjoy dinner out on waterfront restaurant decks, and take sunset walks on natural hiking paths.

We’ve explored lots of West Michigan’s small towns and chatted with locals to bring you just a little idea of what these areas boast, and why you should plan a visit to check them out for yourself this year. South Small Towns Coldwater: Visit Capri Drive-In theatre, catch a performance at Tibbits Opera House, or splash at the Aqua Pit. Marshall: Visit the Welcome Center for a free self-guided walking map to tour historic markers, buildings, and monuments. Three Rivers: Visit Three Rivers for their annual special events, including the Water Festival and the Fall Color Tour. Colon: Colon is “The Magic Capital of the World,” with a magic festival, magic shops, and Magic City Egg Fest. Hastings: Downtown Hastings is home to many seasonal events, including Fridays at the Fountain, Summerfest, and more. Central Small Towns Fremont: Fremont is home to the world’s largest baby food company, and celebrates each year with a festival.

You’ll find many idyllic places to boat to, cast a line, and wait for the fish to bite. Fishing is one of West Michigan’s most popular outdoor activities, and for good reason. It’s truly one of the most relaxing and rewarding outdoor activities you can take part in. The Pere Marquette River Lodge is nestled on the banks of the world famous Pere Marquette River in Baldwin, and is perfect for a fishing weekend. They offer on-site lodging, and guided trips down the river for experts and novices alike. When the weather warms up, Ludington and Mason County offer great destinations for fishing. Ludington’s proximity to deep waters, excellent offshore structure, warm shoal waters, and natural river mouths make a perfect habitat for growing trout and salmon. In southwest Michigan, Big Lake Outfitters of Saugatuck is your one-stop for any fishing needs, plus you can reserve their fishing charter to take you out to the best spots on Lake Michigan.

Enjoying a meal outdoors, with the sun shining, a gentle breeze, and a table full of friends is one of the best ways to savor summer in West Michigan. While outdoor dining has been a warm-weather staple for years, the area’s new Social Districts only improve upon this popular pastime. When you visit a city’s Social District, you’ll find that you’re able to order both food and drinks (alcoholic beverages included) in to-go containers from participating restaurants and bars, and enjoy them anywhere you like outdoors within the Social District. These Social Districts make for a great place to meet up with friends, and everyone can grab their food/beverages of choice before gathering for a meal. They also allow you to carry open containers of alcohol throughout the Social District, letting you browse through the downtown area while enjoying a local beverage. You will need to purchase your drinks through one of the locations participating in the Social District, and it will be served in a specially marked glass to indicate it’s allowed within the Social District. Each Social District has its own hours, seasonal operation, and rules for participating businesses. Check out the cities on the next page that you can visit this year and enjoy an outdoor beverage in the downtown area.
