Rich with history, West Michigan is home to dozens of lighthouses. Some have been restored to show off their historic significance, while others have been modernized and still help ships navigate the dangerous coastline. While the lighthouses themselves stand as a testament to the area’s rich maritime history, many offer immersive experiences that will invite you to become part of that history. Climb the many steps to enjoy the view from the top of the tower, or even spend the night in the lighthouse keepers’ quarters and help tend the lights. Did you know there’s an official driving route that will take you past West Michigan’s lighthouses? The official Lake Michigan Circle Tour route is designated by green “Circle Tour” signs placed at 10 mile intervals. Whenever you spot a brown “Harbor Tour” sign along the route, it’s your signal to take a side trip to explore one of the dozens of port communities along the Lake Michigan shore.
