MEET THE HOWLEY FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

Rob and Cassie, a dynamic couple, chose Maplewood as their home two years ago, driven by a passion for community, family, and outdoor activities. When they outgrew their Jersey City residence, they sought a spacious and inviting environment, which led them to Maplewood. Cassie shares, “Two co-workers lived in Maplewood, and they had good things to say about it. We explored a few nearby towns, but we really felt at home here.” Their story began at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Cassie recalls, “I ran late to class, and one seat remained in front of Robert. We started as friends, and then it evolved from there.” Rob adds with a smile, “She’s the only person who calls me ‘Robert’; I don’t even know how that started.” Their family now includes lively daughter Cate, who turns eight in August, and energetic son Ronan, who recently celebrated his first birthday. Cate thrives on softball and proudly plays for the local travel team, the Villagers. Cassie shares, “Cate works hard and practices a lot. She loves to play catcher.” Ronan, although still small, enjoys biking with his dad. Rob says, “I have a bike that carries both kids, and they have a blast with it. It’s awesome, just a lot of giggles.” Two spirited corgis round out their household; sometimes they even get in the bike too! Rob works as a software engineer at SeatGeek, focusing on machine learning and data applications, but his love for biking connects him with the community. He actively participates in Maplewood’s biking scene and advocates for safer biking routes throughout Maplewood and South Orange. “I do all things ‘bike’ around Maplewood and South Orange. While I enjoyed walking everywhere in Jersey City, it’s a bit tougher in SOMA. Everything is a good biking distance.”

6 somalivingmagazine@gmail.com

@somalivingmagazine

Rob leads the Marshall Bike Bus, a group that takes a regular route to school, picking up kids and parents along the way. The main account for his advocacy work is @bikesoma_nj, while the account for the bike bus route he leads is @marshallbikebus. “We show up at school with up to thirty people on bikes. It’s a lot of fun.” He also attends local government meetings to advocate for bike lanes and safer streets. “We want people to not die when they’re outside of their car,” he states plainly. Their efforts include organizing group bike rides to support street safety projects, with local officials sometimes joining. Rob remembers, “At a recent rally for bike lanes, we took over the whole road— everyone met at the park, and the kids made signs ahead of time. It’s hard to argue with a group of determined kids.” Cassie, the Director of Finance & Administration for “This American Life,” became a Girl Scout leader after trying to find a troop for Cate. “I was a Girl Scout, and I thought it would be a good way for Cate to make friends. It has been great for her, but also for me to meet people and make friends too,” she reflects. She’s attempting to grow a hummingbird garden, reflecting her appreciation for everyday beauty. “I have the flowers but no hummingbirds yet, so we’ll see. I hope so,” she says with a smile. Rob and Cassie’s story illustrates community involvement and family joy. Their days overflow with energy and dedication as they try to create a brighter, safer, and more beautiful environment for everyone. Cassie summarizes, “We love living in Maplewood. There’s pride when a kid on a bus or across a restaurant waves to me or Rob. It’s so beautiful here, and it’s just fun for us to be a part of the community.”

OYSTERFEST OYSTERFEST CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF COMMUNITY AND IMPACT

The Robert J. Miller Oysterfest is back and ready to rock as it celebrates its 10th anniversary at The Woodland in Maplewood on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 6–10 PM. Since its inception in 2015, Oysterfest has raised over $150,000 toward melanoma awareness, vital research grants, and support for local families in need. This beloved event, hosted in partnership with the Township of Maplewood, has cemented itself as a highlight on the community calendar with its blend of music, food, and charitable giving. This year’s milestone celebration promises to be unforgettable with catering by local favorite Celebrated Foods, two live bands, Hoi Polloi and Black Tie Groove, an open bar, the enchanting sounds of bagpipers, and, of course, the signature oyster and raw bar that has become synonymous with the event. Guests will also hear about the Melanoma Research Foundation’s establishment of the 2024 research grant in memory of Robert J. Miller, which was awarded to Jayesh Menon, a University of Rochester medical student dedicated to studying metastatic melanoma. “Ten years ago, we set out to honor Bob’s memory in a way that brought people together,” shares Grace Miller, co-founder of the Robert J. Miller Foundation. “This event is a tribute to his life but also to the heart of this community—one that shows up, gives back, and makes a lasting difference.” Tickets for this adult-only event are $150 per person and $75 for young adults aged 21–25. Get your tickets online at [www.bobmilleroysterfest.com/tickets](http://www.bobmilleroysterfest.com/tickets) or in person at St. James’s Gate in Maplewood. As we commemorate our 10th year, we are actively seeking local sponsors to help us make an even greater impact! HEALTH & WELLNESS Why do you exercise? For too long, people have focused on “shrinking” our bodies, chasing an often unrealistic ideal. But what if we reframed exercise not as a punishment for what we ate but as a powerful tool for building genuine resilience and stamina? When you lift weights, run that extra mile, or push through a tough yoga pose, you do more than burn calories. You teach your body and mind to adapt, endure, and overcome. This isn’t about fitting into a smaller size; it’s about expanding your capacity to show up and live fully. Think about the mental grit it takes to complete a challenging workout – that same grit translates directly into your ability to handle stress at work, navigate personal challenges, and keep your cool during a tandem toddler meltdown. Regular physical activity strengthens your cardiovascular system, improves bone density, and boosts your immune response – all vital for long-term health and the stamina needed to live a full, active life. It’s about feeling strong, capable, and energized, ready to face whatever challenges come your way. So, let’s move away from the obsession with taking up less space and instead embrace exercise as a celebration of what our bodies can do by building a foundation of resilience that serves us far beyond the gym. While it’s great to have a nice a**, the real flex is being able to wipe it yourself when you’re 90.

LUMIE SALON TRENDING STYLES AND CARE TIPS

This August, balayage and face-framing highlights remain popular for women seeking a natural, sun-kissed look. These techniques add dimension and brightness, beautifully complementing any skin tone. For those wanting a subtle change, soft caramel or honey tones can warm up your complexion and add a touch of summer glow. Hair health is essential, especially with continued sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater. We recommend deep conditioning treatments to restore moisture and prevent dryness. Regular trims help eliminate summer damage and keep your style looking fresh and polished. Additionally, incorporating gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and heat protectants into your routine can make a significant difference in maintaining vibrant color and healthy strands. Hydration is key—both externally with nourishing hair products and internally by drinking plenty of water. Whether you’re considering a new cut, color touch-up, or simply want expert advice on maintaining healthy hair, Lumie Salon is here to help. Visit us this August for personalized tips and the latest trends to keep you feeling confident and radiant all season.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INGREDIENTS CRISPY ASIAN CHICKEN WINGS Prep Time: 10 mins • Marinating Time: 4 hrs Cook Time: 1 hr • Servings: 4 Sticky, sweet, spicy, and crispy Asian chicken wings are perfect party fare. They’re marinated to be extra tasty and juicy and baked in the oven to be extra easy! 2 lbs chicken wings, tips removed and separated into drummettes and wings 2 cloves garlic, smashed 1 1/2 inch piece ginger, coarsely chopped 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 Tbsp light brown sugar, packed 2 Tbsp chili garlic sauce 2 Tbsp unseasoned rice vinegar 2 Tbsp soy sauce 3 Tbsp hoisin sauce 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt 3 Tbsp sesame oil *sliced scallions, lime wedges, and sesame seeds for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Whisk all the ingredients (expect wings and garnish) together in a bowl. 2. Place the chicken wings in a large Ziploc bag and pour marinade over. 3. Seal and turn several times to coat. 4. Chill at least 4 hours, but overnight is ideal. 5. The following day preheat oven to 350 degrees and place chicken wings on a non stick foil lined sheet sheet tray, reserving marinade. 6. Bake for 1 hour, or until cooked though and browned. Turn the wings a couple times as they cook to prevent sticking and promote even cooking. 7. Strain the reserved marinade into a saucepan over med/high heat.. Add 1/2 cup water to the pan and bring to a boil. Boil 10 minutes. Start with 1/2 cup water and add more if the sauce gets too thick. 8. Sprinkle the chicken wings with sesame seeds and scallions and serve with sauce and lime wedges.

RECIPE NOTES Recipe yields about a dozen wings . • I’ve found that marinating the wings overnight makes for a super tender and flavorful bite. • Like your wings with more heat? Add a splash of Sriracha to dial it up. • Turn, turn, turn those wings as the bake so they don’t burn and cook evenly. • They’re perfect served with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, scallions, and a squeeze of lime for added flair. • If you’re feeling saucy, cook the reserved marinade down to serve on the side or drizzled over the top. This is one of those times when less isn’t more.

In a tough real estate market, rising prices, limited inventory, and increased competition discourage many buyers. Instead of stepping out of the market or continuing to rent, buyers should adjust their expectations and focus on smaller, more affordable starter homes. Although these homes may not include every feature on a wish list, they provide a critical advantage with a path to homeownership. By purchasing a modest starter home, buyers begin to build equity and stability instead of paying rent that yields no return. Smaller homes typically come with lower price tags, reduced maintenance costs, and more manageable mortgage payments. These benefits help first-time buyers stay within budget while gaining valuable experience in homeownership. Owning a home, even a smaller one, offers freedom to personalize the space and enjoy tax benefits, such as mortgage interest deductions. It also serves as a stepping stone: buyers can build equity over time and eventually upgrade to a larger home in the future. In uncertain markets, flexibility and realism remain vital. Lowering expectations doesn’t mean settling, it means being strategic. A smaller starter home can provide pride, independence, and a solid foundation for future financial growth. HOME DESIGN “Wow...,” the young girl murmured. We stood in a cavernous warehouse filled with hundreds of stone slabs, row after row of quartzite, marble, and quartz. I was with my clients, a couple whose kitchen I’m renovating, and their design-savvy daughter. “Pretty impressive, isn’t it?” I responded. “Okay,” said Mrs. Client, “We’re here to see if the quartz countertop we previously picked still holds up, design wise, to the backsplash ideas we have.” “Right,” I agreed, then added, “It’s always a smart idea to come in person to look at the full slab of stone, not just the small sample you see in stores. You should look to see exactly what you’re getting.” “And we’re looking to see if all the elements we picked out work together, right?” asked their daughter. “Exactly!” I answered. We walked down an aisle of slabs, reached Calacatta Michelangelo, and held up our paint boards (which represented our cabinets) and tile samples. “It looks terrible together,” Mrs. Client confessed.

“I don’t like it at all,” said her daughter. “Why don’t we look to see what else they have?” said Mr. Client. And off we went, meandering our way through the maze of beautiful stones, holding up our paint boards and tile samples along the way like a prince with a glass slipper trying to find the perfect fit. And finally, there it was: a stone slab that fit perfectly with our tile and cabinets (see picture in the ad below). “I’m so glad we did this today,” said Mrs. Client. “Yes,” I agreed, “It’s really smart to see all the elements together like this, rather than once it’s all installed, and you realize too late that you made a poor design decision.”

INTERIOR DESIGN As you’re reading this, I’ll be beginning a month-long stay in the hospital. It’s my next step in the fight against this stubborn LeukemiUGH. It’s a road I never imagined I’d be on, but here I am, doing my best to keep hope shining, even while I await my bone marrow transplant. And while I’m trying to stay brave, the thought of fluorescent lights and beeping machines day after day feels overwhelming. So, I’m planning another little “transWHOREmation” for my hospital room. It’s a small way to bring comfort and beauty into an unfamiliar place. Right now, trends like “dopamine décor” and “color drenching” are everywhere, and I’m leaning into them with ALL. MY. HEART. I’m packing bright pillowcases, cheerful art prints, and my coziest throws in vibrant colors. Because even on the hardest days, color reminds me that I’m still me. I’m also bringing small touches of nature like faux plants, a lavender pillow spray, and framed photos of family, friends, and pets. Little things that say home when I need it most. Because design isn’t just about pretty spaces. It’s about HOPE, COMFORT, and HOLDING ON to who we are, even in the hardest moments. And right now, I’ll take every bit of beauty I can find. Sooooooo, whether you’re facing a hospital stay or just a rough week, remember to surround yourself with things that make you feel safe and seen. Your space, no matter how temporary, can help carry you through. Until next month: stay fabulous, stay fearless.

POWER OF SLEEP In the beginning of our lives, sleep needs change quickly. Every young parent knows that newborn sleep patterns can be erratic and challenging. In utero, a fetus during the third trimester sleeps for almost all but two or three hours a day, with REM sleep dominating, accounting for 12 hours or more daily. No other life stage features as much REM sleep as the womb. This REM sleep supercharges the fetal brain’s development, facilitating the formation of billions of neural pathways. One major hindrance to this process is alcohol. It negatively impacts the ability to enter and sustain REM sleep, leading to potential developmental issues for the fetus. Expecting mothers should abstain or strictly limit alcohol consumption.

nucleus, which acts as the brain’s internal clock, takes considerable time to develop, so newborns lack a circadian rhythm. As any parent knows, their alternating sleep and wakefulness doesn’t align with day and night. A practical solution involves creating a structured environment for your newborn. Ensure they experience repetitive time signals daily through exposure to daylight and darkness, temperature fluctuations, and consistent feeding periods. This approach helps establish a robust 24-hour circadian rhythm.

With this support, both of you can achieve better sleep!

FINANCIAL FOCUS

In the age of social media, finding advice on money management has become easy. Content creators known as “finfluencers, short for financial influencers, use platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram to share insights on investing, budgeting, and wealth building. Many possess charisma and relatability, speaking from personal experience. However, accepting financial advice from a finfluencer without deeper investigation carries significant risks. Some finfluencers hold formal training or credentials, but many do not. Their influence often relies on popularity instead of professional experience. A 2025 study by the Swiss Finance Institute indicates that unskilled finfluencers attract larger followings than skilled ones. For young or new investors, social media can make finance appear accessible. A 2022 FINRA study shows over 60% of Americans under 35 obtain investing information from these platforms. Social media lacks regulation like traditional financial advising; anyone can offer financial tips, qualified or not. While traditional financial advisors understand your unique goals, finfluencers typically do not. Most lack licensing (check here: Check Out Your Investment Professional | Investor.gov). Even well-meaning advice may lead to risky paths if it lacks personalization. SHOULD YOU TRUST A ‘FINFLUENCER’?

Warning signs to watch for include: • Unrealistic “get-rich” promises: Claims like “Turn $500 into $50,000 in a year” likely indicate scams. • Hurry, hurry: Beware of pressure to act quickly. • Flashy displays of wealth: Images of luxury often prioritize views over sound advice. Finfluencers can engage audiences, but rely on informed, personalized guidance for your financial health.

FROM THE DOCTOR

Sciatica and Prevention

Sciatica, caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, disrupts daily life beyond just physical pain. Here are three significant impacts that highlight the broader challenges of this condition: Loss of Productivity: Severe sciatica pain makes it difficult to concentrate on work or daily tasks, affecting productivity and goal achievement. This issue becomes particularly problematic for individuals in physically demanding jobs, where mobility remains essential. Reduced effectiveness at work can lead to career setbacks and frustration. Financial Strain : Sciatica often imposes a substantial economic toll. Severe cases involve costly medical treatments, prolonged recovery times, and lost wages, especially if individuals cannot work for extended periods. These financial pressures create additional stress, compounding the condition’s overall impact. Social Isolation: Chronic sciatica pain limits participation in social activities since physical discomfort may prevent individuals from attending events or engaging with friends and family. This isolation leads to loneliness and emotional distress, creating a cycle of reduced social interaction and worsening mental health. Addressing both the physical and emotional consequences of sciatica is vital for improving overall quality of life. Effective chiropractic care tailored to each condition’s severity and individual lifestyle helps mitigate these challenges. After achieving relief from sciatica pain, prevention becomes the next step. While you cannot prevent sciatica from returning completely due to factors like pregnancy, degenerative disk disease, and aging, simple awareness and preventive measures can reduce the likelihood of recurrence: - Exercise - Weight Management - Avoid a Sedentary Lifestyle - Proper Lifting Technique

THE LAW OF CLARITY: THE LAW OF CLARITY: YOUR SHORTCUT TO EFFECTIVENESS

The Law of Clarity asserts that clarity around your goals enhances your effectiveness in achieving them. Lack of clarity often leads to frustration and underachievement. Having clear, written goals helps you achieve more in less time. To succeed, it’s essential to have clarity, which guides your direction and actions. Regularly writing and reviewing your goals enhances this clarity and inspires consistent progress. Follow these seven steps to accelerate your goal achievement: 1. Define specific goals for key areas of your life. 2. Write them down in detail. 3. Set deadlines and break larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. 4. Develop a comprehensive action plan, adding tasks as needed. 5. Organize your tasks logically.

6. Take immediate action on the most important task. 7. Continuously focus on activities that align with your goals. Few adults write down and work on goals daily. By committing to this practice, you join the ranks of high achievers. Remember to regularly review and adapt your goals as necessary. Now, apply this law immediately: 1. List 10 goals for the upcoming year as if they are already accomplished. 2. Identify the goal with the greatest positive impact on your life. 3. Use the seven-step method for this goal by setting deadlines, crafting a plan, and taking daily action. Embrace clarity and prepare for transformative changes in your life.

Pritchett, director of Seton Hall’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Program, received the Sister Rose Thering Fund Clergy Award. Hailing from Atlantic City, NJ, Pritchett serves as a civil rights icon and transformative educator. He remarked, “Sister Rose and Bishop Joseph Francis mentored me early in my career. Their lessons of hope empower me to confront injustice. It’s vital for us to inspire future generations.” SRTF vice chair Frank Stebbins called Pritchett “a partner in the mission of the Sister Rose Thering Fund. He opens up the world to countless individuals, demonstrating the impact one can have on their community.” Rabbi Michael Berenbaum, recognized for his significant contributions to Holocaust and human rights education, received the award in the Humanities and Holocaust Education. “Rabbi Berenbaum’s work aligns perfectly with our mission at SRTF,” noted Anthony Sciglitano, Ph.D., SRTF executive director. “We honor his lifelong dedication to educating others about the Holocaust while supporting our educators.” SRTF EVENING OF ROSES SRTF EVENING OF ROSES CELEBRATES CHAMPIONS OF EDUCATION AND HUMANITY

Mike Ayers launched a new book on July 22 with St. Martin’s Press, and it perfectly captures current trends. “It’s a huge oral history of the ’90s jam band world called ‘Sharing in the Groove’,” says Ayers. This book received rave reviews, with Esquire magazine recognizing it as one of the best books of summer 2025. Publishers Weekly also labeled it one of the best books of the season, while The AV Club called it “a notable book for summer.” Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the ’90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene that Followed marks Ayers’ second book and his first with St. Martin’s Press. In this narrative, he explores the ’90s jam band world, highlighting a DIY culture that thrived on live performances and captivated a new wave of fans who valued experience over studio albums. Mike interviewed over 150 individuals, including members of Phish, Widespread Panic, Medeski Martin & Wood, and many managers, producers, record label executives, and road crew members. In 2020, Ayers’ first book, One Last Song , posed a thought-provoking question to musicians: If they could listen to one last song before they died, what would it be? At that time, Variety recognized it as one of the best books of the year in 2020. NEW BOOK EXCITING NEWS ABOUT MIKE AYERS’ NEW BOOK

Honoring Wisdom and Wellness: Celebrating National Senior Citizen’s Day on August 21st

How Physical Therapy Empowers Seniors to Thrive in Their Golden Years Each year on August 21st, America observes National Senior Citizen’s Day as a day to honor the achievements and contributions of older adults. Established by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, the day highlights the importance of supporting their ongoing health, independence, and engagement in society. As our population ages, physical therapy plays a crucial role in healthy aging. More than simple exercise, physical therapy provides seniors with personalized care plans designed to enhance mobility, manage pain, and promote independence. Aging brings experience but also increases the risk of health conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, and chronic pain. These challenges can limit a senior’s ability to perform everyday tasks and participate in community events. However, these challenges do not signal decline or isolation. Many older adults thrive with the right support. Physical therapists (PTs) act as movement specialists who help seniors stay active and safe. Whether recovering from surgery or working to prevent falls, PTs design individualized programs that improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. They conduct assessments and offer targeted exercises to reduce fall risk and boost confidence. PTs also teach seniors to manage chronic pain without relying on opioids. National Senior Citizen’s Day reminds us that aging represents a valuable stage of life. With medical and community resources, including physical therapy, seniors can live fully, maintain dignity, and continue making meaningful contributions. Families, caregivers, and health professionals should reflect on how we support our aging loved ones.

Tau, a presence that configures 6,000 pounds of steel, is a monumental sculpture by South Orange native and world renowned art- ist Tony Smith. The work is bold and singular, but appearing modular, offering many van- tage points. The work represents nothing, while being a mirror for its surroundings. Tau is as open to interpretation as a viewer is to its acceptance. Tony Smith grew up in the Great Depres- sion. Born to a manufacturing family, he at- tended Fordham, then Georgetown University, and returned to open a used bookstore in Newark. Smith began courses at the Art Stu- dents League and studied in Chicago at the New Bauhaus. In 1938 he worked for Frank Lloyd Wright, as a brick-layer and later be- came commissioned to design and build struc- tures under his own name. Eventually Smith reconnected with his “art”, and taught design at Hunter College, then the Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, NYU and Bennington College, Vermont. During this time Smith was influenced by New York’s circle of abstract painters and friends Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, who would visit Smith’s studio; a spacious sculpture garden, adorned with his wooden maquettes and rigid forms, located behind his home on Stanley Road in Montrose Park. ART WHAT IS TAU, WHO IS TONY SMITH?

@somalivingmagazine The Smith residence on Stanley Road was a gathering place for many creatives that rig orously developed then unknown art forms. This environment inspired his children Kiki and Seton to also become professional artists on In 1962 Smith created Die, a six-foot steel cube, establishing his footing as a premiere American artist. While the specific inspira- tion is unclear, as a viewer would approach this mass, there is no doubt their own mortali- ty comes into question. The scale and weight, enough to obliterate anything in its path, gave new meaning to what it is “to sculpt”. Sculpture was no longer just what you bumped into when backing up to look at a painting. Perhaps Smith’s biggest break was his inclu- sion in the Jewish Museum’s 1966 exhibition ‘Primary Structures’ which opened the door for his work at an increasingly larger scale. He became featured at prominent institutions in- cluding the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hart- ford, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Venice Biennale, and the National Gal- lery in Washington D.C. This biggest “Smith effect” is the legacy of Tony Smith., who inspired the following gener- ation of American artists including Sol LeWitt and sculptor Richard Serra among many oth- ers associated with this movement known as “Minimalism”. Smith spent his life collecting influences and honing his talent across the fields of art, design, and architecture, which he generously shared with any student or con- temporary who dared to pick up a pencil and turn it into a career. The installation was organized Judy Wukitsch and the Lennie Pierro Memorial Arts Founda- tion, seeking to enrich the lives of South Or- ange and visitors from all communities. Tony Smith died in 1980 at the age of 68. The Estate of Tony Smith is represented by Pace Gallery, New York.
