SOMA Living August 2025

The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race invites you to a dynamic lineup of events this fall that reflects our mission to advance racial equity and inclusion. On September 18th, our Schools Committee will host its 20th Annual Board of Education Candidates’ Forum at the district meeting room, 525 Academy Street, Maplewood. Candidates will address ways to achieve racially integrated schools, close the achievement gap, foster belonging, and support academic excellence for all students. This vital opportunity allows voters to hear from candidates at a key moment in the district’s integration efforts. Our Integration Through the Arts Committee will offer two engaging fall art circles. The Mural Art Circle, led by award winning teaching artist Roberta Melzl, will bring together students and adults to create a community mural across four Saturday sessions beginning September 8th at The Baird. The Opera Art Circle, led by acclaimed opera singer Lori Brown Mirabal, will begin September 22nd at Prospect Church and will explore opera’s rich history through the lens of racial diversity. Advance registration is required for both. Finally, mark your calendars for Celebrating Integration, our annual gala on Thursday, October 16th, at Orange Lawn Tennis Club. Visit www.communitycoalitiononrace.org for all event details and registration. FALL EVENTS SPOTLIGHT: EDUCATION, ARTS & COMMUNITY CONNECTION COALITION ON RACE
