SOMA Living August 2025

HOME DESIGN “Wow...,” the young girl murmured. We stood in a cavernous warehouse filled with hundreds of stone slabs, row after row of quartzite, marble, and quartz. I was with my clients, a couple whose kitchen I’m renovating, and their design-savvy daughter. “Pretty impressive, isn’t it?” I responded. “Okay,” said Mrs. Client, “We’re here to see if the quartz countertop we previously picked still holds up, design wise, to the backsplash ideas we have.” “Right,” I agreed, then added, “It’s always a smart idea to come in person to look at the full slab of stone, not just the small sample you see in stores. You should look to see exactly what you’re getting.” “And we’re looking to see if all the elements we picked out work together, right?” asked their daughter. “Exactly!” I answered. We walked down an aisle of slabs, reached Calacatta Michelangelo, and held up our paint boards (which represented our cabinets) and tile samples. “It looks terrible together,” Mrs. Client confessed.

“I don’t like it at all,” said her daughter. “Why don’t we look to see what else they have?” said Mr. Client. And off we went, meandering our way through the maze of beautiful stones, holding up our paint boards and tile samples along the way like a prince with a glass slipper trying to find the perfect fit. And finally, there it was: a stone slab that fit perfectly with our tile and cabinets (see picture in the ad below). “I’m so glad we did this today,” said Mrs. Client. “Yes,” I agreed, “It’s really smart to see all the elements together like this, rather than once it’s all installed, and you realize too late that you made a poor design decision.”
