SOMA Living August 2025

Mike Ayers launched a new book on July 22 with St. Martin’s Press, and it perfectly captures current trends. “It’s a huge oral history of the ’90s jam band world called ‘Sharing in the Groove’,” says Ayers. This book received rave reviews, with Esquire magazine recognizing it as one of the best books of summer 2025. Publishers Weekly also labeled it one of the best books of the season, while The AV Club called it “a notable book for summer.” Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the ’90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene that Followed marks Ayers’ second book and his first with St. Martin’s Press. In this narrative, he explores the ’90s jam band world, highlighting a DIY culture that thrived on live performances and captivated a new wave of fans who valued experience over studio albums. Mike interviewed over 150 individuals, including members of Phish, Widespread Panic, Medeski Martin & Wood, and many managers, producers, record label executives, and road crew members. In 2020, Ayers’ first book, One Last Song , posed a thought-provoking question to musicians: If they could listen to one last song before they died, what would it be? At that time, Variety recognized it as one of the best books of the year in 2020. NEW BOOK EXCITING NEWS ABOUT MIKE AYERS’ NEW BOOK
