MEET THE HENKEL-LORENZ FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

The Henkel-Lorenz family radiates with energy, starting with eight year-old Eleanor “Ellie,” their dynamic director of public relations. Ellie’s ambition led her to become SOMA Living’s athlete of the month in October 2023, and she didn’t stop there. After the cover, she’s eyeing the spotlight for their dog, Penny, as Pet of the Month. With her moms, Lauren and Liz backing her every endeavor, Ellie’s wishes often transform into reality. Lauren and Liz’s romance blossomed from a friendship that started when they both taught in NYC. “Our classrooms shared a wall,” Liz recalls. “A few years later, we fell in love and then started dating – in that order,” she adds, eliciting laughter from Lauren, who reminisced about their 2013 wedding at The Queens County Farm. Before settling in Maplewood in 2017, the family lived on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Inwood. They were drawn to Maplewood’s diversity, the community pool, and the quaint houses. “Eleanor was about to turn two, and we had a friend who knew someone who lived here,” Lauren explains. Hadley, a spunky five-year-old old, proudly interrupts, “I got my deep water band on the first day the pool opened last year!” The family’s love for their cul-de-sac home mirrors Lauren and Liz’s own childhoods, offering a safe and fun environment for outdoor activities. Ellie boasts, “We have a treehouse in our backyard so all the kids on our block can come and play.” When asked about their family’s special element, Ellie doesn’t hesitate: “Our dog Penny. She’s a black miniature poodle. We got

her right at the beginning of the pandemic,” with Lauren chiming in, “We always say that she’s about 70% trained because we had a two-year-old and a five-year-old at the time and she didn’t really get our full attention.” The Henkel-Lorenz family’s love for Maplewood is palpable, especially its proximity to New York City. “We go into the City all the time,” Liz notes, sharing their recent adventures to the Statue of Liberty, Broadway, the High Line, and the Rockettes. Both moms currently work from home, with Liz leading a curriculum team for Great Minds and Lauren working for Goalbook, an ed tech company. “We’re both still in education,” Liz says, highlighting the precious moments of dropping off and picking up their kids daily. Ellie and Hadley both attend Seth Boyden Elementary School. They love their teachers, participating in the Read-a-Thon, and getting to learn and see their friends every day. Ellie is a Maplewood Makos swimmer. She also enjoys gymnastics, softball, basketball, and of course, Taylor Swift. Hadley also participates in gymnastics and softball, and is looking forward to trying out for the Makos this summer. Maplewood represents more than a home; it’s a community where their children can thrive. “We’ve met really great people here. The queer community is amazing,” Liz shares, detailing their participation in Pride and other community events. Ellie, ever the PR specialist, concludes, “The best part of having two Moms is that you can have a birthday party with all girls.”

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s feature is Lilia Franzblau.

Julie Perlow, Retail Therapy - Lilia was a lot of fun to style. She has a “good girl” elegance but was willing to go a bit edgy and romantic. I loved learning about her background, being brought up near Romania, and coming to this country after college. She looked great in a dramatic scarlet-colored, silk corset

She met her husband in Brooklyn at a birthday party for a mutual friend, and together, found their dream home in Maplewood, where they live and raise their two children. Lilia enjoyed her experience working with the Dream Team, which she said “offered a warm, inviting atmosphere for her to reconnect with herself, meet new local professionals, and explore fashion, arts, and culture.” Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady - I met with Lilia, who has her life under control as far as maintaining good sleep and keeping anxiety in check. Therefore, we focused on her beauty care. I introduced her to the Potency No. 710 line of beauty products, particularly the White Water Serum, which is a lightweight, vitamin-fortified, and water-based serum

Her natural beauty shines in the updated bold and sassy dress we picked for the photo shoot. Norah Salzar, Makeup artist - Working with Lilia was a joy. It was particularly windy the day we met, so my focus was on making sure the skin looked extra radiant and well-prepped with moisturizer. Sometimes wind and cold air can create havoc on our skin appearance. I kept her eye makeup neutral and focused more on giving her a range of strong lip statements, to match the colorful,

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INSTRUCTIONS

3 egg whites ½ cup sugar ½ tsp kosher salt 1 vanilla bean, scraped and pod discarded 7 oz sweetened coconut flakes 6 oz unsweetened coconut flakes *melted semi-sweet chocolate for drizzling (optional) There is no treat more synonymous with Passover than the coconut macaroon. They are crafted from pretty simple ingredients: coconut, egg whites, and sugar, yet they can yield widely different results. This is my favorite version; airy, not too sweet, and deliciously flecked with vanilla bean. INGREDIENTS COCONUT MACAROONS Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 15 mins Yields 36 cookies

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and line two sheet pans with parchment. 2. Add egg whites to a clean, dry bowl and whip with the whisk attached to soft peaks. 3. Slowly add the sugar to the whipped egg whites, then the salt, and continue to beat until you have stiff peaks. 4. Add the scraped vanilla bean and the coconut flakes to the bowl. Use a spatula to carefully fold until just combined. 5. Using a 1 ½ inch scoop or a spoon to place rounded mounds of the batter on the lined pans. Bake for about 15 mins or until the cookies are set and just beginning to brown. 6. Drizzle with chocolate if desired. RECIPE NOTES Special equipment: 1 ½ inch scoop • Make sure your bowl is dry and grease free so the egg whites will whip properly. A glass or stainless steel bowl is ideal. • Don’t let any egg yolk slip into the whites as they won’t whip up well. If a

drop drips in, use a part of the cracked shell to remove it. • A room temperature egg white will whip to a greater volume than a just-out-of-the refrigerator one. • Once you reach stiff peaks in your meringue, be gentle when you fold in the remaining ingredients so you don’t deflate the batter. • An ice cream scoop is ideal for perfectly formed, consistent cookies. • To easily scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean, slice it lengthwise on one side only. Open it like a book and use the back of your knife to scrape the seeds in one downward stroke.

LAWN FERTILIZATION

PREPARING FOR LAWN FERTILIZATION: A SIMPLE GUIDE

Many of us greet the Spring with the best intentions for ”do it yourself” maintenance of our lawns. Here are nine easy steps for lawn fertilization: 1. Assess the condition of your lawn by walking around and identifying areas that require attention, such as thin patches, thatch buildup, or discoloration. 2. Conduct a soil test to determine the pH level and nutrient composition of your soil. This information will help you select the appropriate fertilizer blend. 3. Choose a balanced fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium based on the results of your soil test. Alternatively, customize the fertilizer blend to address any deficiencies identified. 4. Gather the necessary equipment for the fertilization process, including a calibrated spreader, gardening gloves, and protective eyewear. 5. Apply the fertilizer in early spring when the grass starts to come out of dormancy. Avoid fertilizing during drought or extreme heat to prevent stress on the lawn. 6. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging carefully to avoid over-application. Use the spreader to evenly distribute the fertilizer across the entire lawn.

7. After fertilizing, thoroughly water the lawn to help the nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the grassroots. This also prevents fertilizer burn and promotes healthy growth. 8. Monitor the progress of your lawn in the weeks following fertilization. Observe its growth, color, and overall health, and make any necessary adjustments to your lawn care routine. 9. Implement regular maintenance practices like mowing, watering, and aerating to keep your lawn thriving throughout the season. By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to kickstart the fertilization season and cultivate a vibrant, healthy lawn to enjoy throughout the year. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Call us. We can set up a customized plan and help make your lawn beautiful.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

LONG TERM CARE OPTIONS

Understanding long-term care is crucial. We all wish for health and independence, but the unpredictable nature of life might lead us to require long-term care, posing a significant financial question. Long-term care includes services ranging from home health aides to nursing home stays. The chances of needing such care are high, with nearly 70% of those turning 65 today likely needing it in the future. Costs are steep, with home health aide services averaging over $60,000 annually and nursing home stays exceeding $100,000. Medicare often covers little of these expenses. Relying on family for care is not always feasible due to skill and proximity limitations. To manage potential costs, you have two main strategies: self-insure or purchase long-term care insurance. Self-insuring, suitable for those with significant financial resources, involves setting aside funds specifically for long-term care. However, predicting the exact amount needed is challenging due to various factors. Alternatively, long-term care insurance covers a range of services but can be costly and requires thorough comparison of policies for benefits and costs.

REAL ESTATE

With warmer weather, the real estate market begins to bloom. There are several factors why spring has traditionally been the best time to sell your property. From the greening of lawns and trees to the growth of competitive buyers, the following reasons are why homeowners should take advantage of the spring season to sell. 1. More Buyers Buyers come out of hibernation and are eager to shop after the cold winter. The surge of potential homebuyers leads to more offers and competitive bidding wars, making it the best time of the year to sell. 2. Curb Appeal Spring sets the stage for your home to look its best and draw the attention of potential buyers. Capitalize on the warmer weather, flowering gardens and longer days to elevate the look of your home’s façade, front entry and landscaping. Brighten your interior with fresh paint and professional staging so your home stands apart from the rest. 3. Families Shop in Spring Families with children bring increased demand in spring. People moving to SOMA want to be settled before the school year begins. It can normally take 45 to 60 days to close so spring time is the time families start seriously looking. If you are ready and eager to sell, now is the time to beat the competition and spring into action. Call me to help you navigate the blooming spring market. SPRING IS THE TIME TO GROW ROOTS IN SOMA

HOME DESIGN “It’s a gorgeous master bathroom,” she said.

“It is indeed. And huge! The shower alone is as big as my primary bathroom,” I replied. She laughed, though I had no idea who she was. I was visiting homes during the Realtor Open Houses. This was a multi-million dollar new construct, and she was an agent I’d never met. “I just love the light fixtures,” she said. “Agreed, beautiful even if they are poorly placed,” I added. “What do you mean?” she asked. “See how they’re placed above the mirrors, kind of up high? That’s not too flattering,” I pointed out. “I don’t get it,” she said, confused. “Step up to the sink,” I suggested, and she did. “The ceiling lighting is behind you, so the only light on your face comes from that sconce up there, creating shadows. Not very flattering,” I explained. “Ew, yeah,” she muttered, stepping out of the light. “So what do you do?” she asked. “Side sconces, one on either side of the mirror, about 66 inches off the floor. Much more flattering,” I said. Pictured below is the primary bathroom I renovated with side sconces.

INTERIOR DESIGN Splurges!!! People ask me all the time, “Hey! What items are WORTH splurging on?” I call myself the “Decor Whore” because I am a whore for great design, AND great pricing. My entire business is built around one philosophy… you CAN have a beautiful home without breaking the bank! And so, while I have lots of advice on where to cut costs, I also have strong opinions about WHAT items you SHOULD invest in… Sofas, desk chairs, and mattresses are DEF worth investing in. It may sound utilitarian – but these items can be accessorized in a way that makes them chic, modern and stylish! We spend years sitting and sleeping - so opt for quality products that support your body. Also go with a reputable brand (Pic #1: C&B sofa) that is well made, AND can take a beating (GET THE PERFORMANCE FABRIC!).

In addition, custom built-ins are ABSOLUTELY worth every penny. It adds value to your home, AND it also adds character & style, while giving you the storage you need to display books and personal treasures. Typically you see custom these in Living Rooms or TV Rooms, but they are also fabulous in bedrooms (Pic #2)! And lastly, overhead lighting (Pic #3). It doesn’t sound sexy... but adding hi-hats to a room is a game changer. It will literally change everything about the space... making it warmer, cozier, and more inviting... it will cost a bit - but I promise you, it will make a world of difference!!!

5 REASONS WHY I CAN’T SLEEP

Sleep is crucial for metabolic balance, memory, concentration, immune health, and removing toxic waste. Here are five things that can ruin a good night’s sleep: Not winding down: Like a child too excited to sleep on Christmas Eve, or after a day so busy you replay it in your head, failing to calm your mind at night can harm your health. Decompressing is key to avoiding the next day’s fatigue and long-term health issues. Bringing the phone to bed: The blue light from your phone disrupts your circadian rhythm, and endless scrolling through social media can prevent sleep, making it difficult to disconnect. Not getting enough sunlight: For those stuck indoors, lack of sunlight affects our sleep cycle. Bright light, especially in the morning, aligns our circadian rhythm, helping us sleep better at night. Being stressed: Stress leads to shallow breathing, elevated heart rate, and insomnia. It’s how you respond to out-of control situations. Constant stress keeps you alert, affecting sleep and overall health. Lack of physical and mental activity: Active days or focused work improve sleep quality. Sedentary behavior harms sleep, and poor sleep reinforces bad habits. Prioritizing sleep is a significant life investment. Sleep is a critical health aspect. For more insights, get our “Searching for Health” booklet to evaluate your health facets.

TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

People often undergo total hip replacement due to painful conditions like arthritis, severely limiting mobility and daily activities. Hip replacement is a last resort when medications, physical therapy, and assistive devices fail to relieve pain. The procedure significantly eases discomfort and improves walking. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the primary reasons for this surgery. Osteonecrosis, another critical condition, happens when blood flow to the joint is blocked, leading to bone death and making the joint prone to damage. Injuries, hip impingement, dysplasia, and tumors also necessitate hip replacement. Patients considering surgery may undergo pre-op physical therapy to enhance outcomes, although practices vary. Minimally invasive hip replacement, performed through small incisions with specialized tools, typically results in less pain and quicker recovery. Techniques include lateral, posterior, or the direct anterior approach, with the latter often leading to easier recovery due to less muscle disturbance. Not all patients qualify for this less invasive option. Rehab begins immediately post-surgery, focusing on early mobility and transitioning to outpatient therapy. The goal is normalizing gait, progressing from walkers to minimal support, and building leg strength. Key precautions include avoiding certain leg movements to prevent dislocation. Treatments may use ice and electrical stimulation to reduce pain and improve function.

COALITION ON RACE Disinformation and Its Adverse Impact on Race

This year’s Conversation on Race will take place on May 14th at 7:30pm at Congregation Beth El, South Orange. We are excited to welcome Dr. Kelly Harris, Sr., Staff Director at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Africana Studies. He will discuss the threats of disinformation and its role in perpetuating racial stereotypes and hindering

Dr. Kelly Harris

progress toward equity and inclusion. This community conversation aims to increase awareness, understanding, and collective action against the damaging effects of intentionally misleading, racially charged propaganda. Disinformation has shaped narratives around racial justice and worsened social inequalities for decades. Historically, racialized propaganda manipulated public opinion, maintained racial hierarchies, enforced segregation, undermined civil rights, blocked access to housing and various services, and promoted voter suppression. The rise of the internet and social media allowed disinformation to spread at an unprecedented rate. False narratives quickly become widespread, targeting specific racial and ethnic groups and swaying public opinion on efforts to combat systemic and institutional racism. As we confront new and escalating challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools, workplaces, and civic life, we encounter Dr. King’s “fierce urgency of now” once more. Finding ways to strengthen our advocacy for racial justice is crucial. Register today at communitycoalitiononrace.org.
