Welcome Compiling a list such as the Top 100Hotels in theWorld is quite an undertaking, but with this issuemarking a full year of our Elite Collection — for which we have scoured the globe to bring you the best in adventures, suites, restaurants, watches and gifts —we’re quite the experts. And this issue’s Top 100 won’t disappoint. It really is the most comprehensive list of the world’s best hotels, illustrated with magnificent images and including top suite prices and contact details to book — all the better to open up the world as only Elite Traveler can. If your new year’s resolution is to be more active, we have the perfect solution — play more golf! Scientists in Edinburgh (Scotland is the home of the sport, so we’re happy to trust them) released a study a few years back expounding the health benefits of the game. Apparently players live longer and will benefit from improvements in cholesterol levels, wellness and self-worth. If that doesn’t do enough to persuade you, head to p80 for our rundown of the top golf courses in the world, or read our inspiring interview with legend Jack Nicklaus on p42. We’ve even snuck a PGA Golf Tour experience into this edition’s Hot List. If, however, the only sand you want between your toes is due to long walks on a beach (as opposed to a bunker), our Top Suites of the Maldives offers an enticing selection of incredible accommodations. Our Explore section is jam-packed with the best places to stay, eat and hang out. This issue we jump from the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, to Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in the world. We then journey from the architecturally striking Hamburg to Seoul, the host of this year’s Winter Olympics, before going back to the sunshine of St Kitts and Nevis. As always, if you want to comment on anything in this issue, drop us a line at editorial@elitetraveler.com

sherry notes. Tequila aficionados will delight in the smooth, elegant taste of the Ultra, which is complemented by an aroma boasting hints of caramel and sweet vanilla. Clase Azul Ultra is produced in limited quantities and is rapidly becoming a coveted collector’s item, featuring a decanter that has been handcrafted with the level of care that one would expect from such a distinguished tequila. In Santa María Canchesdá, indigenous Mazahua artisans spend two weeks creating each decanter by hand, upholding the Clase Azul mission to share the magic of tequila through this dedicated production process. Decorated using pure platinum, sterling silver and 24K gold, this is a work of art in itself. From$1,800

The story of Clase Azul Tequila begins in the small town of JesúsMaría, perched on one of the highest points in Jalisco, Mexico. Here, the legendary tequila is crafted from 100 percent organic Tequilana Weber Blue agaves, which are cultivated from the highlands before being cooked in old-fashioned brick ovens for 72 hours. Clase Azul’s ultra-premium, extra añejo tequila, Clase Azul Ultra, is the culmination of years of recipe refinement and perfection. The highlands where the TequilanaWeber Blue agaves grow lend a unique flavor to Clase Azul that is further enhanced in the Ultra due to a five-year aging process in sherry wood casks from Spain, giving this tequila a refined character and an aroma bursting with

Watches DISCOVER

Bulgari GranSport in black DLC-treated steel

Car and watch collaborations are a dime a dozen — it seems like every prestigious car brand has a luxury watch bearing its name. How to stand out from the crowd? For starters, reserve the watches exclusively for the car owners. Add on a dial design inspired by a car’s dashboard and two ultra-cool complications, and you’re off to the races. Bulgari’s Italian Job

For Maserati and Bulgari’s most recent timepiece collaborations, GranSport and GranLusso, Bulgari combines jumping hours and retrograde minutes in a new movement. Using these two complications together makes for a dial so unique that people will stop you to ask what’s on your wrist. Instead of traditional hours and minutes that encircle the dial, there is an aperture at 3 o’clock for the jumping hours, and a curved scale from 6 o’clock to 1 o’clock that tells the minutes using a retrograde function. The minute scale goes from 0 to 6 and looks just like a rev counter on a Maserati dashboard, albeit one that moves much more slowly. As the minutes tick closer to the hour, the watch comes to life. Right as it hits the hour, the jumping-hour disc switches to the next hour and the retrograde minute hand flips back to zero, faster than the human eye can detect. It’s really quite fun to watch. Nods to Maserati are found throughout the design. Its signature trident is just below the jumping-hour aperture, and the sporty

perforated leather strap with contrast topstitching feels very automotive. To celebrate this collaboration, we headed to Palm Springs to drive the new Levante up one of California’s most perilous highways. Highway 74 is a steep, windy stretch that climbs 1,400ft in what feels like the blink of an eye. Your ears will pop several times and your stomach will be churning as you watch the sheer drop-offs rise higher and higher with each turn of the wheel. At speed, this type of driving is best left to the professionals. Once at the summit — which has stunning views of the Coachella Valley — you’ll be in the perfect place to take a picture of your watch on the hood of your Maserati. BRAND PROFILE ATELIERS DEMONACO

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Ateliers deMonaco, whose launch was the culmination of Fredérique Constant head watchmaker Pim Koeslag and CEO Peter Stas’s lifelong dream of creating a minute repeater. The brand focuses exclusively on high horology, blending Monaco’s enduring glamour with Swiss precision. In 10 short years it has earned four patents, including a perpetual calendar that is adjusted using only the crown, and achieved the prestigious Geneva Seal on multiple timepieces. Each watch is impeccably finished, undergoing over 100 hours of hand- polishing, making the movement as beautiful as the dials.

Tourbillon Casino de Monte-Carlo Using its patented automatic Tourbillon XP1 movement, which holds one of the most precise tourbillons in the industry, this unique piece also highlights Ateliers deMonaco’s artistic prowess. An 18K white gold dial features three hand-engraved plates depicting the famous Belle Époque casino. The namesake tourbillon takes the place of the central fountain in front of the casino. $154,700 Quantième Perpétuel Turini The patented movement is a gift to collectors everywhere, removing the difficulty and tools generally required to adjust a perpetual calendar. Push the crown to the desired setting, then turn the crown to make the adjustment. The partially skeletonized dial allows you to admire the movement through a smoky or black sapphire. Each color is limited to 88 pieces. $34,600 La Sirène Rubis It wouldn’t be a Monacan brand without a nod to the royal family. La Sirène is dedicated to Princess Charlene of Monaco. On the dial is the king protea, the national flower in her home country, South Africa, rendered in rubies, sapphires and

THE FB 1.4 CHRONOMETER

A modern ode to a revered 18th-century watchmaker who created marine chronometers and was the official clockmaker to the French king and navy, Ferdinand Berthoud is a special division within Chopard. This group of watchmakers is dedicated to interpreting his works through a 21st-century lens using high-horology techniques. In its first watch, the FB 1, it brought the fusée-and-chain transmission back to the modern era. This method has fallen out of favor over the years, but in Berthoud’s time, it was a technological marvel. It provides constant force, which renders the watch incredibly accurate, even at the end of its power reserve. Part of this unique movement is visible through an opening on the dial. Previously available in white gold, red gold and platinum, it is now available in an all-titanium case, making it much lighter — including the strap, it weighs just 2.82 ounces. The case has also evolved. Whereas the three previous versions had portholes on the side to view the movement, the sides are closed in the titanium edition and the movement is visible through the caseback. Also new are the sapphire half-bridges, which allow more light to enter the movement now that the sides are closed, and showcase the polished power-reserve cone for the first time. The COSC-certified chronometer is available with a black or silver-toned dial, and each color is limited to 20 pieces. Men’s style SHORT STORY

There were a plethora of shorts on the menswear runways for spring 2018. We can’t get on board with the short- shorts look or shorts at the office (realistically the short suit only works if your employer is Thom Browne or you reside in Bermuda, where even Parliament officials don the region’s namesake shorts in session). But we can endorse Bermuda-length shorts for your next warm-destination getaway. Jason Basmajian of Cerruti 1881 channeled the house’s archives circa mid-1980s, when Nino Cerruti dressed the men of Miami Vice . Basmajian, however, was careful to pay respectful homage to the era and offered a contemporary take without veering into costume territory. Tailored teal leaf-jacquard shorts were paired with a jade double-breasted coat, striped chain-stitch boatneck sweater and derby shoes. The David Hart gentleman went on a journey to Old Havana, wearing pleated linen Bermuda shorts, a fine-gauge mercerized-cotton polo and huaraches, finished with a Cohiba in hand. There’s a sublime ease to Véronique Nichanian’s designs for Hermès. Nichanian expertly elevates what at first glance appears to be a simple shorts-and-henley pairing. But from her hands emerge a pair of drawstring cotton Bermuda shorts and a cotton- crepe pullover with diagonal-stripe detailing. TheMichael Kors spring showwas in full ‘out of office’ mode. From palm tree–shadow prints to tie dyes, the collection transported the viewer to the Polynesian islands. A handful of models even sported leis. Palm-print linen shorts were paired with a linen-and-cotton pullover, with optic-white accessories grounding the fresh aesthetic. Aloha!

Women’s style

For tropical getaways, you can’t get much better than a dreamy white dress. This season, designers took us on a whirlwind tour around the world, pulling inspiration from sources as varied as the classical Greeks to the American West. At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld transported his audience to an ancient ruin in Greece without ever leaving Paris’s Grand Palais. Bouclé paired with gladiator sandals, Greek-inspired prints, a hint of a toga, and plenty of white and gold walked the runway. The details on the pictured dress recall waves in the Aegean Sea, best seen from a chic villa in Santorini or aboard a fabulous yacht. Taking inspiration fromMarrakech photographer Hassan Hajjaj, New York–based designer Prabal Gurung brings us on a trip through Morocco. Nearly half of the pieces stick to a strict palette of black and white, with ruffled, tiered dresses and playful polka dots lending a sense of ease and modern elegance to the collection. Heading to Russia, Olga Vilshenko drew on the works of artist Michelle Morin and 18th-century Russian seascapes in her romantic line. Floral motifs wound their way through the pieces, in both prints and cutouts, as seen here s the most Instagrammed show of the season, Dior and Mar of Calabasas, California, for an ode to the American Wes e. At times a bit costumey, the collection still included stan es of white dresses. All white now on a crisp white dress. Even though it’s only resort season, spring has sprung. Delicate floral patterns appeared throughout the collections. Rosie Assoulin used flowers on elegant gowns, as seen here, and on crop tops, dresses and even a pair of overalls. CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund winner Brock Collection has taken the industry by storm since its debut in 2014. Designed by husband-wife duo Kristopher Brock and Laura Vassar, the label channels the relaxed vibe of Los Angeles, where the company is based. INTO THE DEEP

Whether it’s a playful octopus swimming in the ocean’s depths or a palm tree swaying gently on the beach, the marine world offers plenty of inspiration for designers. In a recent addition to his beloved Crazymals series, de Grisogono founder Fawaz Gruosi rendered an endearing octopus called Buddy in pink and purple sapphires, with bulging eyes made from pink opals and black diamonds. French designer Yvonne Léon’s palm tree earrings, in sunny yellow gold, fit underneath the earlobe for a unique take on the motif that allows for mixing and matching with other designs. A NOT SO SECRET AGENT

Aston Martin’s reinvented DB11 is a skinny, striking coupe perfectly suited to escape the everyday

engineer Ian Hartley, the largest single piece of aluminum in automotive use forms the clamshell hood. The DB11’s curvilinear front rounds out with a familiar grille, recalling the first David Brown Aston of 1948. While this vehicle marks the first implementation of both electric-power steering and a virtual spoiler (a small deployable one that creates downforce via air channeled through interior vents), the cherished whiskers on the front fenders continue the unbroken design lineage evident on every coupe since the 1958 DB4. Although I managed to fit four full-grown adults and their respective weekend luggage in the DB11, it wasn’t without some hearty stretching and morning yoga. wholeheartedly embraced. A lower and ever-so-slightly rear-biased center of mass invigorates the British-bred V8, which utilizes a biturbocharged 4.0-liter Mercedes-AMG motor, albeit with a retuned intake and exhaust. The result is the bark of German efficiency with the bite of a British disposition; less of an aggressive growl, more of a throaty fervor that eagerly embraces these winding country roads. It was here that the stiffest of three adaptive damper settings suited, allowing for unfettered changes of direction, buttressed with a grip and thrust granted by bespoke Bridgestones. Their moniker, S007, I’m assured is absolutely coincidental despite AstonMartin’s long association with a certain belovedMI6 agent. According to AstonMartin’s senior dynamics

The swift and mighty rise in elevation from sea level in North County San Diego to the crest of Palomar Mountain, some 6,000ft and 60miles northeast, is thick with switchbacks and blind, tight corners. A cloudless foggy sky gives way to a tepid morning, the kind that lends itself to a windows-down kind of drive and a promise of forthcoming sunshine. It’s almost as if the road rises to meet the Aston Martin DB11, the iconic grand tourer that’s been slimmed down and stiffened up into a V8, shedding four cylinders and 243lbs from its V12 predecessor. Beginning with fewer cylinders is common practice for many car manufacturers, but the fact that AstonMartin released the DB11 V12 first, followed by the V8, marks a curious yet finely executed move, and one that’s sure to be

PORSCHE PROXIES Want a Porsche as an anywhere vehicle without the hassle of actually owning it? Load a couple of surfboards on the roof of a Cayenne and hit the beach. Slip into a 911 and head out for a Friday night on the town. Dreading Monday morning traffic? Ease the pain by commuting in a Panamera. Porsche believes there’s a perfect vehicle for every occasion; hence the launch of Passport, its app-based subscription service. Providing entrée into a more flexible ownership option, Porsche is looking to attract both brand loyalists (those who want the supercar but own the SUV) as well as younger, technologically savvy first-time buyers who just aren’t sold on a particular model. Although the program’s pilot launch is taking place in Atlanta, it has the potential to disrupt both the luxury-car dealer and rental industries. Passport users can opt for either the Launch or Accelerate program. The former offers eight model variants, including the 718 Boxster, Cayman S and Macan S, while the latter offers 22 models, including the 911 Carrera S, Panamera 4S, Macan GTS, Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the vehicles in the Launch package. Registration, insurance and maintenance costs are covered, though subscribers will be responsible for fuel. Users can swap for as many different models as desired during the month, meaning it’s possible (and encouraged) to drive nearly the entire fleet of Porsche automobiles. Launch, with access to eight models, is $2,000 per month. Accelerate, with up to 22models, is $3,000 per month. Both have a one-time $500 activation fee. porschepassport.com

The luxurious interior of McLaren’s 720S

Street Predator

Inspired by the lines of the great white shark, the McLaren 720S devours road and track with power and design

Drown out the purrs and the pop-pops of the garden-variety supercar and focus on the understated quivers of the McLaren 720S. A racing-derived supercar born from a legacy of track dominance, McLaren’s 720S feels not only manageable at both high and low speeds, but luxurious and purposeful. The teardrop-shaped cabin allows for the glass canopy to flood the interior with light, but it wouldn’t be a McLaren without a bit of dramatic flair. That arrives in the form of the twin-hinged dihedral doors that sweep forward and up, as well as a pair of eye sockets that serve as air intakes for the vehicle’s low-temperature radiators. They sit just below the headlights, creating an optical illusion of Beetlejuice ogles, wide-eyed and looking for trouble. And with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo and

710-horsepower V8 engine capable of hitting 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, what else would you be looking for? As the second generation of McLaren’s Super Series, the 720S subscribes to the new Proactive Chassis Control II system. Rather than anti-roll bars and traditional dampers, McLaren has substituted a set of interconnected hydraulic dampers. Chassis settings adjust and self-modify every two milliseconds thanks to algorithms developed with Cambridge University and a dozen sensors around the car that feed it information. The result is not just a car that feels like it could quite possibly drive itself, but one that may be able to predict the future. And that’s a very appealing proposition, whether on urban or suburban roads. From $285,000, cars.mclaren.com
