Musical masterpiece
More fitting for the Gagosian than a living room, this piano looks like anything but a musical instrument. Aptly named Le Silex ( silex means “flint” in French), the piano’s sculptural and dramatic curves are designed to emulate a large piece of flint found in nature that has been split in two parts by lightning. When closed, the piano looks like an abstract piece of art; when opened, it reveals sleek piano keys and a built-in music stand. Each piece is crafted from a life-size clay cast by a team of 15 artisans and expert sculptor Gareth Knowles, known for creating outstanding custom pieces for Arabian royalty. The exterior of the piano has a grainy quartz texture finished in verdigris, black diamond or flint, while the interior has a contrasting glossy finish, and you can select the colors for both. Each piece takes six months to make, and thanks to the endless customization options, no two will be the same. Edelweiss, the Cambridge, UK–based piano maker responsible for this masterpiece, is also the creator of the first self-playing piano. Le Silex, too, is self-playing, and has a hidden iPod pre-programmed with 900 songs of your choice. If you don’t feel like playing, have a live concert in your home while the piano plays your favorite songs. You’ll be one in (literally) a billion people on Earth to own such a piece — only seven will be created. From $357,900. Contact sales@edelweisspianos.com, +44 122 388 1691, edelweisspianos.com
This example has been finished in striking green verdigris, perfectly complemented by a glossy gold-hued interior, but you can also choose from statement black diamond or a more natural-looking flint exterior

HOWDY, SPORT Utility vehicles continue to gain momentum as the world’s favored family car, so automobile manufacturers remain resolute in diversifying the sector. A trio of first drives demonstrate the breadth and depth of possibility; from impressive off-road capabilities to bespoke refinements, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Bentley are on a mission to seduce future buyers
The off-road behemoth: Rolls-Royce Cullinan
It’s downright imposing. From the wide-open dusty trails of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to the palm tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills, California, the Cullinan looks, frankly, out of place. On one hand, it’s a Rolls-Royce, a moveable work of art that is always attracting sideways glances or mouth-agape stares, depending on locale. On the other, it is out of place; Cullinan marks a series of firsts for the Goodwood, England-based brand. First SUV. First all-wheel-drive vehicle. First Rolls-Royce to break the traditional naming convention (christened “Cullinan” after the famed 3,106-carat diamond that became part of Queen Elizabeth II’s crown jewels). In the great outdoors, it feels dauntless to dirty it up, like a dare. In the city, the 6,069-lb SUV seems to rise above traffic. Valets take up two parking spaces, just in case. In both instances, and for very different reasons, the 563-horsepower, 627 lb-ft torque V12 delights. Ascending Snow King Mountain in Jackson Hole, Cullinan bounds over rocks thanks to its foam-filled tires, comfortable-yet-controlled steering and 6.75-liter twin-turbo. A depression of the ‘Off Road’ button engages stiffer shocks and raises the suspension 1.5 in. Navigating west to east in Los Angeles rush hour traffic, the four-wheel steering eliminates as much as three feet off Cullinan’s turning radius by automatically steering the rear wheels up to three degrees. The addition of 220 lbs of sound-deadening material to the cabin means that, even with the vast sunroof fully open, the quotidian city sounds feel distant. Exactly six millimeters of glass separate interior from exterior, rectangular buttons assist with all four massive suicide-styled doors (the rear two of which include mounted umbrellas), and the split tailgate/trunk was purposefully designed
to eliminate packages from sliding. A duo of seating options exist: five-seat, three-across and four-seat with fixed console and massaging rear seats, although Rolls-Royce expects the first option to be the favored. Prior to launch, Rolls-Royce referred to Cullinan as an “all-terrain high-sided vehicle” as opposed to a mere sport utility vehicle. This differentiation is important; the sport and utility of Cullinan have yet to be fully realized. Neither roof racks nor towing capabilities are available. Inside, Cullinan does not offer Apple CarPlay, lane centering or semi-autonomous cruising. While some may argue Rolls-Royce owners still prefer chauffeurs, this technology-first experience transcends tax brackets. Cullinan encourages its owners to take a turn in the driver’s seat, should the desire arise, on account of the new double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle, which control and tame body roll. It took 300 engineers three years to fully embody the “effortless everywhere” moniker, whether off-road or on pavement. From $325,000, rolls-roycemotorcars.com

The smaller engine that could (and did): Bentley Bentayga V8
Pragmatism is not typically associated with the Bentley badge. Prior to the 2016 debut of the Bentayga W12, the Crewe, England- headquartered company touted its billion-dollar SUV development spend. Now, Bentley is highlighting the 130 hours of assembly time required for its next iteration, the Bentayga V8. Amidst those numbers, though, lies a lighter, louder and newer version of Bentley’s best-selling model. As the icy blue rapids of the Columbia River run in the snow- capped shadow of Mount Hood, the V8’s twin-quad tailpipes gurgle and grunt, hungry for the throttle. Weaving from Oregon to Washington and back again, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo proves more than capable of handling the narrow, rolling roads of the Pacific Northwest. While an additional, and frankly negligible, .4 seconds are needed for the V8 (versus the W12) to reach 60 mph, the smaller, less weighty engine revs higher and sits further back within the engine bay. The result is a more responsive, deceptively faster Bentayga with better weight distribution. Add the eight driving modes (including permanent 4WD and snow and grass), as well as cylinder deactivation technology (which allows it to run as a V4 in lower- load situations, thus improving fuel economy) and this 542 horsepower, 568 lb-ft torque SUV is smarter, leaner and more practical than its predecessor. Make no mistake, the V8 retains the pomp and pleasure of a Bentley, with a host of all-black chrome finishes on the bumper and headlight trim, side skirts and grille. The doors are acoustically optimized, and the optional 17.3-in, carbon-ceramic brakes (get them) sit inside 10-piston calipers and tie with the Lamborghini Urus as the biggest front brakes on any production vehicle. The 99-year-old manufacturer will be taking orders this summer for its new 3.0-liter, V6 Bentayga hybrid with an electric range of 31 miles. From $165,000, bentleymotors.com
Pure, unadulterated silence is an odd sound on an active racetrack. Refracting off the slate-gray Autódromo Internacional do Algarve pit-row barricades, there’s no internal-combustion escalation, no proprioceptive engine foreshadowing. Instead, there’s a small but thunderous whir that hits the eardrums all at once on this cloudless day in Portugal. It’s not until the I-Pace takes another lap that the sound of air being pushed, pulled and separated is identifiable. Then it strikes: Jaguar’s first all-electric SUV demands a whole new vocabulary as the first vehicle to enter the luxury EVmarket. Miles per gallon is irrelevant; let’s talk range and kilowatt hours (kWh), pouch cells and regenerative braking. While some of these terms may be gently familiar (thanks, Tesla), I-Pace will transport them into the vernacular. The gearless I-Pace features a 90kWh battery under its floor and two motors that launch 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft torque to all four wheels. In short, the I-Pace joyfully accelerates with ease. Its regenerative braking, though, involves some acclimatization. Imagine sizeable braking simply by lifting your foot off the gas. A coast option is built in, should drivers want to forego regenerative braking. The EPA granted the I-Pace a range of 234miles (Los Angeles to San Francisco is a tad over 380miles), a fair but not outstanding range-to-kilowatt ratio. The difference, though, lies in its charging time. The I-Pace requires 40minutes to go from zero to 80 percent on a 100-kW fast charger, or 85 minutes on a more standard 50-kWone. That’s thanks to the 432-high-energy dense pouch cells inside the battery that expedite charging and regulate heat management. You can even ionize the air or pre-cool the interior during charging. Trading in the long, low and signature Jaguar hood for a short, sloped and scooped-out one — there’s no front engine, after all —means boosting aerodynamics and boldly redefining decades of Jaguar design. A high, rectangular spoiler atop the rear windshield channels and attracts air at the back of the vehicle. Inside, a panoramic glass roof stuns in its simplicity, while two command screens allude to Jaguar’s cousin, the Range Rover. While driving, opt into the active sound design digital soundtrack, a whoosh-like feedback that plays through the cabin’s speakers in lieu of engine noise. TAKE THREE/// MARINAS
BERTH RIGHTS
So, you’ve purchased the yacht of your dreams. You’ve been given the keys (not literally of course) and your eye is firmly fixed on the horizon, imagining adventures to be had and seas to sail. Though the experience of cruising the high seas is probably one of the reasons you’ve made this investment, you must consider where to berth your yacht. Most commonly, you buy a berth in a marina for a fixed term— it’s leased to you and this expires after a period of time, ranging anywhere from five to 20 years. Christophe Harbour on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, however, is unusual in the fact it offers berths for sale with a deeded, freehold title. Though you may purchase a waterside home with a deeded freehold berth (this is particularly common in Florida), it’s rare to be able to purchase a single berth in this way. At Christophe Harbour, there are currently 24 freehold berths (ranging from 150 ft to 220 ft in size), with six new 350-400 ft berths planned for the end of the year. We sat down with Charles “Buddy” Darby III (you might know him as the developer of the stunning Kiawah Island in South Carolina), who explained that this came about due to the unusual history of the marina — it used to be a completely enclosed pond. “Like a countryside estate with a
pond, you own that pond and the bottom of that pond. So, when it came time to breach the dyke and open the marina, we were able to deed the bottom like a plot to owners.” This creates a remarkable opportunity for yachtsmen that are attracted to the tropical setting of St Kitts, but don’t want to invest in a depreciating asset that they won’t even own in a few years. Berth ownership at Christophe Harbour has another financial benefit as well, as it offers eligibility for economic citizenship via the St Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment program. Some of the benefits of this program include visa-free travel to more than 120 countries and no residency requirement, though we’re mostly tempted by the destination marina feel of Christophe Harbour. The lively shoreside village is built for idle wandering and the casual perusing of art galleries, cafes and shops. And if you’re keen to get rid of those sea legs, stay in the Park Hyatt St Kitts Christophe Harbour hotel, the Caribbean’s first Park Hyatt

The story behind the name In ancient Rome, a praetor was a person who “goes before the others.” A praetor was one of the high-level Roman magistrates with legal power who would often lead armies
Aviation by Samantha Coles
At NBAA-BACE in Orlando, Florida, two new game-changing business jets, the Praetor 500 and Praetor 600, were introduced by Embraer. Instead of creating newmodels, they are the next-generation versions of the Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 jets. Both feature incredible technology and the utmost creature comforts for wherever your journey takes you A new legacy PRAETOR 500 This midsize aircraft is the fastest of its kind: It is capable of flying to Europe from the west coast of the US with just one stop, and has a continental range of 3,250 nm. At 6 ft, the wider-than-average, flat-floor cabin is the tallest in its class. It also has the largest baggage space in its category (ideal for those jaunts over to Europe) that can be accessed in-flight. The four club seats can be berthed, and the jet has room for up to eight passengers. The cabin’s interior design, called Bossa Nova, is a reimagination of Brazil’s beaches, where Embraer’s headquarters are located; the silk-and-wool carpets mimic the waves of the sparkling ocean and the stitch pattern on the seats is inspired by the walkways of Ipanema beach. To think of Gray Malin is to envision pastel- hued, full-of-life photographs. His style is as iconic as the locations he shoots (Namibia, Bhutan and Antarctica), and his work is transportive — the instantly recognizable bird’s-eye-view shots of beaches, parks and ski resorts evoke fond memories of fun vacations. In fact, his slogan is “Make Every Day A Getaway.” In a new partnership with The Beverly Hills Hotel, Malin looked back to the golden age of Hollywood glamour to create a collection of photographs set at the storied hotel. Two-thirds of Americans prefer to work out in the privacy of their own home and, as a result, there are a number of at-home workout classes on the market — usually integrated with equipment such as a treadmill or stationary bike. Mirror is different: Discreetly hanging on the wall like a regular mirror, it has an LCD panel, stereo speakers, camera (with lens cap for privacy), microphone and one-way mirror for an immersive workout session. It is the brainchild of Brynn Putnam, a former professional dancer for the New York City Ballet and founder of Refine Method fitness studios. She understands that while studio classes are great in many ways, people often don’t have the time to attend — especially those who travel frequently. Mirror provides an effective workout that you can customize based on how much time you have and, during your workout, instructors provide real-time feedback. The clever system adapts based on your goals and biometric data, and tracks your stats with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, or you can sync it with your Apple Watch. There are over 50 workouts available for live streaming (you can train live with other members for some friendly competition), which are then added to Mirror’s library for on-demand classes including cardio, strength, Pilates, barre, boxing and stretching, with different levels available depending on your ability. From $1,495; monthly content subscription $49, mirror.co Mirror, mirror

TOTAL GENIUS
If you have ever had your DNA tested for one specific aim, say, to find out your family tree, you’ll know that if you then wanted to discover something else (such as how your genes affect your diet or genetic conditions), you would need your DNA sequenced once again and have to send off a new sample each time. Helix cuts out the middleman and, with one simple, at-home saliva sample, an entire network of products and treatments are opened up to you, based on your unique DNA. Helix is selective about which brands it partners with (National Geographic is one example) and, as your recommendations are as tailor-made as they come, you can be sure that no faddish
products will be suggested. You can opt for the food sensitivity package where you can tailor your diet and lifestyle based on your body’s sensitivity to certain food groups; see how caffeine affects your body and your sleep patterns; and how your genes affect your body’s response to certain types of exercise. There are even options for wine recommendations based on your DNA. Helix keeps your DNA profile stored and with ever-evolving technology, it can keep making up-to-date suggestions. Don’t worry, though, as it uses the same secure data system as online banking, so rest assured

STYLE MEN’S WATCHES
by Kristen Shirley
HOUR HANDS First designed to help pilots keep track of time zones in the early era of commercial flying, GMT watches use a 24-hour hand to track a reference time. Originally, the hand indicated Greenwich Mean Time, the day’s universal reference time, but now it is generally used for home time (despite its name). Rolex’s GMT-Master has set the benchmark since 1955, and its latest GMT-Master II brought back the iconic “Pepsi-colored” bezel from the original model, setting the watch world aflame after its release at Baselworld. Patek Philippe’s Calatrava Pilot Travel Time uses a skeletonized hour hand to indicate a second time zone, but on a 12-hour scale. It has day/night indicators for both local and home time, and a local date hand at 6 o’clock. The secondary hours are easy to change on both watches, thanks to independently adjustable hour hands, so your watch won’t lose accuracy when moving time zones. THIS ISSUE, WE TAKE A DEEP DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF TRAVEL WATCHES. WHETHER YOU NEED TO SEE ALL 36 TIME ZONES AT A GLANCE OR SIMPLY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS AT HOME, YOUWILL FIND THE PERFECT WATCH HERE Travel time
DUAL TIME ZONES These watches use apertures instead of hands to show the secondary time zone. Fabergé’s very clever movement in the Visionnaire DTZ, designed by prestigious Agenhor Manufacture, hides a secret at its center, much like its famous eggs. When you look directly into the crystal dome, a magnified aperture tells the time of a second time zone. Be sure to take a peek at the back of the movement to see how small the numbers really are. To showcase the movement, Fabergé ingeniously uses a dial-side rotor; what appears to be a blue dial is in fact the embellished rotor. The movement is very subtle; it is only noticeable if you are really looking for it. Laurent Ferrier’s Dual Time Galet Traveller uses two push buttons to move the secondary time zone backwards or forwards. The hour is visible at 9 o’clock, and the local date is displayed at 3 o’clock. There’s also a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. TRIPLETIMEZONES For those with multiple offices and homes around the globe, a triple time zone watch can let you know what time it is in each location without calculating the time difference from your secondary time zone. A true masterpiece, Bovet combines three time zones with a flying tourbillon, a staggering 10-day power reserve and breathtaking artistic decoration. It has central local time with a moving dome that mimics the Earth’s movement. The two additional time displays have 24-hour dials surrounding two engraved world maps, and have apertures with the city’s name above each, so you’ll never forget which dial tracks which location. What’s more, it is convertible from a wristwatch to a pocket watch or table clock. The aptly named Master Banker from Franck Muller shows local time with central hour and minute hands, and has two subdials showing different time zones. This in-house movement spent several years in development, and has a flying tourbillon. INDEPENDENTTIMEZONES These very complex watches allow you to track both hours and minutes in two different time zones, which is very useful for time zones that differ by 15 or 30 minutes. With two tourbillons complementing the two time displays and two barrels powering the movement (resulting in an impressive 90-hour power reserve), the Arnold & Son DTE is a serious piece of mechanical wizardry. Parmigiani Fleurier takes a different approach, displaying local time with traditional centered hands, and home time by a subdial at 12 o’clock, each with a day/night indicator. It also boasts a retrograde date function. Both timepieces are beautifully finished in a classic style. Arnold & Son has vertical Geneva stripes on the dial-side plate, lacquered dials and polished bridges, while Parmigiani Fleurier features the Toric collection’s signature bezel with alternating knurling and gadroons. Each time zone is independently set by its own crown. WORLD TIMERS With all of the Earth’s time zones visible at a glance, the world timer is the ultimate travel watch. The Lange 1 Time Zone has an off-centered subdial for local time, with a tiny stop-seconds subdial and day/night indicator, as well as date function and a smaller subdial at 5 o’clock for a secondary time zone, also with day/night indicator. The peripheral chapter ring shows time in the 24 major time zones, which are easily changed by two push buttons. Housed in a stunning platinum case, Vacheron Constantin’s TraditionnelleWorld Time features a beautifully engraved map of the northern hemisphere and a city ring with 36 time zones, including several offset by 15 or 30 minutes, with central hour and minute hands that tell the local time. The offset time zones are colored blue, and the time is shown by a circle instead of a triangle. The automatic watch has a 40-hour power reserve and boasts the prestigious Poinçon de Genève certification.
