MEET THE FAVORS FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

If you ask many of the teachers, firefighters, and police officers of Maplewood and South Orange, “Where can you get the best curry chicken with rice and peas?” they will smile and say, “Nana Brown.” Enid “Nana” Brown is 86 years young, and for the last twenty years she’s been delivering Jamaican meals, cooked with love, to her grandchildren’s teachers and the professionals who help keep SOMA safe. Nana Brown lives with her daughter, Tara, and her family. This includes her son in law, Dale, and her grandchildren Dalton (20) and Davis (17). Dalton is a Junior at Morehouse College where he is majoring in Economics and Chinese Studies and is currently spending a semester abroad in Hong Kong. Davis is a senior at Columbia High School where he acts in both dramatic plays and musicals (all four years). He’s currently applying to colleges with drama programs. Tara beamed as she shared, “So many of my friends who live here don’t have parents in the area. She was the adopted grand-parent for a ton of their kids.” Nana Brown is bigger than just SOMA. Tara described, “ My family is a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc, a national organization dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders. In the depths of COVID – my Mom is teaching teenagers how to make curried chicken. South Orange resident Michelle Miller who is an anchor on CBS Saturday Morning picked up the story and got her featured on CBS Mornings .” Nana Brown is also active in the First Baptist Church and St. Andrew’s Church. Tara and Dale moved to SOMA in August of 1998. Tara explained, “He was living in Brooklyn and I was finishing up graduate school and living in Long Island. Dale knew about South Orange because some of his colleagues in finance lived in town. He knew that there is a really beautiful and close knit black community of professionals in South Orange. We knew we would find a home for our family here. We love this town!”

Like Nana Brown, Tara and Dale are entrenched in the community. Between the two of them, they are involved as volunteers and board members of several not for profit organizations. Tara elaborates, “I’m on the board of two non-profits. One is the Valerie Fund that provides care for kids with cancer and blood illnesses. My youngest was born with a condition called hemoglobin SC , which is very similar to sickle cell. While he continues to be very healthy, we’ve always volunteered with Valerie Fund. It’s based in Maplewood and has centers in eight hospitals around NJ, NY, and PA.” When she’s not volunteering, Tara works as the Chief HR Officer for Mutual of America, which provides retirement services to nonprofits and small businesses. She’s also an avid runner and has a wall full of ribbons, plaques, and medals for marathons and half marathons. She laughed, “My joints hurt just looking at it.” Dale is equally athletic and has coached both football and basketball youth leagues. Sometime in 2018, Dale decided to leave the world of hedge funds and finance to start his own company, Adaptive Growth Leadership. Tara shared, “After 2020, companies reawakened to the prospects of not having enough people of color in their organizations. He helps them to develop an environment that is inclusive and welcoming of diverse talent while providing young professionals and students with the skills and tools they need to thrive.” There is no doubt that Nana Brown and the entire Favors family leaves an indelible mark on the SOMA community.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s Dream Team feature is Gabrielle Anggono. Originally from Uruguay, Gabriela moved to Maplewood seven years ago with her husband, Rudi, two children, Nicolas and Matteo, and

Working with Gaby in the area of style and wardrobe was so gratifying. She moved a bit out of her “style comfort zone” and allowed me to style her with some sassy vintage Dolce & Gabbana heels and a very contemporary animal print dress with a cut out. She looked chic and fabulous! - Julie Perlow-Greene- Retail Therapy It was so exciting to have Gaby for our photoshoot. I wanted to keep her skin looking fresh and very glow-y. I applied a bit of contour to her face and a nude lip. I kept her make up very natural and we had a lot of fun catching up and shooting her photos. - Norah Salzar, Makeup artist After Gabriella’s consultation, we knew her perfect look should accentuate her inherent beauty and amazing cheekbones while embracing her natural transition to gray. A new, collarbone-length cut balances her face shape, while soft, medium layers add movement and draw the eye to those cheekbones. Framing the hairline like this

her mom Maria Jose. Gabriela launched her business, Rookie Humans in Maplewood. It is a children’s bedding brand on a mission to help parents create rooms for their little ones that are filled with color, imagination, and joy. The Dream Team makeover was special to her because for the past seven years she’s been hyper-focused on raising her kids and building her business. This left little time to focus and reconnect with herself.

Gabriela shared that she struggles with sleep, so I suggested a soothing routine of High Tea Good Night Irene and ¼ dropper of Bhumi Lemon Ginger tincture with Delta 8/CBN/CBD for more restorative nights. And to top off her wellness journey in

style? An antioxidant-rich Vitamin C & Ferulic acid serum from TribeBeauty to bring out skin’s natural radiance. - Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady.

allows those grays to softly grow down. We will maintain the length and layering of the cut to gradually remove the fading old color over time. Not only did Gabriella’s face light up from her new haircut, but our faces lit up as well when we realized we are now on this journey with her. - Yoni Kreger, YK Salon It was so much fun to have Gabrielle in the studio. She brought in a bright energy on a very gloomy weather day.

Since Gabrielle’s business deals with textiles, I wanted to try various textures for one of the backgrounds. For the animal print dress, we pulled a

green paper to bring out the green accents in the pattern. Things soon went rogue when I busted out a color prism to create a psychedelic effect. Lee Seidenberg Photography - Lee Seidenberg Photography We’re looking for interesting people for upcoming issues. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INSTRUCTIONS

1 lb challah bread, torn into 1 inch pieces (1 large loaf) 8 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup sugar (+ 1 Tbsp sugar for topping) 2 cups whole milk 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg 1/4 cup spiced rum (orange liqueur or 2 tsp vanilla extract can be substituted) Confectioner’s sugar, fresh berries and maple syrup for topping (optional) INGREDIENTS There’s nothing better than an easy, crowd pleasing dish for brunch like this baked challah French toast casserole. With only a handful of ingredients, and minimal prep, you can have this decadent dish on the table in under an hour. BAKED CHALLAH FRENCH TOAST Prep time: 10 mins • Cook time: 40 mins Servings: 8

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and generously grease a 9×13 baking dish. 2.Tear the challah into 1 inch cubes and scatter in the baking dish. 3.Whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk, cream, salt, nutmeg and spiced rum. 4.Pour the mixture over the challah, pressing lightly to soak. 5.Fluff with a fork and sprinkle with 1 Tbsp sugar. Bake, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes until set, puffed and golden brown. 6.Serve warm, sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar, berries and maple syrup if desired. RECIPE NOTES • Spiced rum gives this French toast casserole a kick, but orange liqueur, vanilla extract, or even orange juice would be a tasty swap. • Making ahead? Let the challah soak in the egg mixture overnight (covered) in the refrigerator and bake the next morning. Allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for about 30 mins before baking.

FROM THE DOCTOR

SHOULDER PAIN

Shoulder pain is usually caused by an inflammation in the shoulder joint and muscles or it can be due to tears of the rotator cuff muscle. There is a clear cut shoulder injury when a patient lifts something too heavy and tears the muscles, resulting in pain localized in the shoulder joint. The pain associated with this kind of injury is usually a dull pain or an ache in the shoulder or the upper arm. The pain is muscular in nature so when the patient moves the arm there is pain but when the patient rests the pain decreases. The pain can be present at night and usually present with overhead activities. A shoulder injury can heal with physical therapy treatments such as strengthening and Range of Motion (ROM) activities. Cold laser treatment is also an effective method to help decrease the inflammation. If the tear is significant enough, then surgery is usually required. After surgical recovery, the patient would return to therapy for post-op treatment. In some cases, if the patient waits too long then “compensations” will happen. These include compromised posture which can lead to neck discomfort. In this case, the real cause of the pain is shoulder but the compensations cause secondary neck pain. It is always best to consult with a licensed physical therapist for any kind of pain you experience in the neck or shoulder to get the proper diagnosis and treatment outcomes. All therapists are experts at determining what is truly a shoulder problem versus a neck problem.

FROM THE DOCTOR

CAUSES OF NECK PAIN

Your neck has a 24/7 job, and that takes a toll over the course of your life. Here are some of the causes for this type of pain: • Unusual Sleep Position: A “crick” in your neck, that often comes from sleeping in a position that put strain on your neck. • Neck Strain: If you do something unusual, like look up at the sky for an extended period or balance something heavy across your shoulders. • Text Neck Syndrome: Too many hours hunched over your smartphone, computer, or work bench can strain those muscles and tendons. • Stinger: Neck injuries caused by impact. Burning pain runs from the base of the skull to the shoulder. • Whiplash: This can happen after a blunt force hits you from behind, forcing your head to suddenly lean forward and then back again, like a whip. • Degenerative Disk Disease: As you age, the disks between your vertebrae can get dry and tear, split, and form scar tissue which causes pain and can lead to arthritis. • Herniated disk, spinal stenosis, and bone spurs also lead to neck pain. Regardless of the cause, a physician offers the proper assessment with a comprehensive history, examination, and appropriate imaging (if necessary). Once complete, your doctor will implement a course of action and treatment plan with re-evaluations to chart progress for realistic outcomes.

Selling or purchasing a home can be an overwhelming undertaking without the guidance of a knowledgeable and devoted realtor. Living in South Orange for over 20 years, I established an expertise of the community. This brings three advantages when it comes time to sell or buy your home: An understanding of local market trends, accessibility, and a knowledge of the area. 1. Understanding the Market: After selling SOMA real estate for upwards of a decade, I gained a sense of how the market evolves two words and a sensibility of the area that allows me to properly price and stage your home to harmonize with local demands. 2. Communication: Because I live and work locally, I am available to physically meet with you at your convenience: every step of the way. Furthermore, my recognition within the community grants access to a network of industry professionals and potential buyers in the area. 3.Local Knowledge: My residency in SOMA allows me to give genuine answers to any of your questions about the community. My experience living in SOMA extends farther than just a knowledge for the market. It is a love for the vivacious, artistic, beautiful and lively spirit of my neighbors and community. FINANCIAL FOCUS If you’re going to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you should know, among other things, how much money you’ll need. And you may have a much better chance of knowing this if you get some professional help. Financial professionals help their clients to achieve their financial goals and lifestyle for retirement. With some specific questions, your advisor can help you calculate how much money needs to be available for your retirement . This number, in relation to your current savings and income, informs an investment plan and strategy. This may also include a calculation of how much you need to save and invest each year until you retire, the size of return you will need on your investments, your risk tolerance, and the availability of other income sources such as Social Security or pensions. Having a financial professional help you gain a clear idea of your retirement income picture can certainly be reassuring. But there may be other reasons why “going it alone” as an investor might not be desirable. For example, when the financial markets are down, as was the case for much of 2022, some investors make decisions based on short-term volatility, such as selling investments to “cut their losses,” even if these same investments still have solid business fundamentals and good prospects for growth. But if you work with a financial professional, you might get advice to stick with these investments or diversify your portfolio. Other times, of course, the advice may be different. But it will always be advice based on your goals, needs and time horizon. In some areas of life, going it alone can be exciting. When it comes to investing for your future, you may benefit from some company on the journey. SHOULD INVESTORS ‘GO IT ALONE’?

RACE & COALITION Community Coalition on Race to Host ‘Talking to Children About Race’ Workshop

People often say they move to our community for the diversity. While living among people from different backgrounds is definitely a draw, true integration requires intention. And it starts at home.

In April, the Schools Committee of the Coalition on Race will present Talking to Children About Race , an annual, free program that offers practical strategies for talking about race with your family. Learn about creating a home environment that supports open communication about race, racial identity, and difference; being intentional about talking about race; providing your kids with the tools they need to understand difference; and, modeling social interactions that are racially inclusive. Kids notice race from an early age, but many parents are afraid to discuss race openly with their children. How can we talk about race productively? How do these talks differ for families of different races, for adoptive families, for mixed-race families? This workshop strives to help parents, caregivers, and educators gain an understanding of the stages of racial knowledge; how to talk with children about race; understand the challenges faced by children of color, multiracial children, and children whose families are of a different racial background; and more. Designed to support intentional integration in and outside of our schools, the program is open to everyone but geared toward families of early elementary and pre-school children. Visit communitycoalitiononrace.org where the final date and location will soon be made available along with registration information.

We want to hear from you!

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, the Gallery at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel is excited to present “Femin-Art: Breaking Boundaries Across Generations of Women Artists.”

In this expansive new show, North Jersey women, ages 23 to 91, explore what it means to be an artist in these turbulent times. The exhibit features an eclectic range of alternative mediums, including oil and acrylic paintings, glass sculptures, photographs, ceramics, and drawings.

Jennifer.McManus@cbmoves.com @jennifermcmanus

Jeanette Hershkowitz- Evel YN Learning

Femin-Art was curated by Lisa Suss and Felix Aarts, two of the founding members of TSTI’s Art Committee. Lisa and Felix are of different generations, but their shared passion for art makes them a great team, proving that age does not define one’s taste in art. As Aarts puts it, “It was important to me to have older artists as part of this show since they are often easily forgotten in the fast moving world where being hip and in tune with technology is so important.” Full list of exhibiting artists: Andrea Epstein, Anita Gladstone, Barbara Minch, Bonnie Maranz, Danielle Masters, Donna Ray Kessinger, Donna Moran, Doris Caçoilo, Hannah Kramer, Heidi Sussman, Jeanette Hershkowitz, Judy Targan, Sarah Petruziello, Susanna Baker, and Yvette Lucas. The Femin-Art opening reception is Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Temple Sharey Tefilo Israel, 432 Scotland Road, South Orange, NJ 07079. It is open to the public, but advance registration is required: https://bit.ly/femin-art-2023.

SOMA ADULT SCHOOL ACTORS SHINE AT THE WOODLAND IN LIKELY STORIES What’s better than listening to a masterpiece of a short story read to you by a seasoned actor? An entire evening of gifted performers voicing brilliant stories with live musical interludes, and followed by a reception with wine and dessert. A much-anticipated event since 2006, this year’s “ The Best of Likely Stories” takes place at the Woodland on March 27 and is just one of the many exciting events planned to celebrate SOMAS’ 90th anniversary. “This is the year we celebrate some of our favorites, the stories that resonate with us and landed with oomph,” director Emily Zacharias explained. Music will play a big role in that added oomph: After each of the three story performances, “The musicians will play music that extends the ‘afterglow’ of the stories’ impact,” Emily added. The actors, all well-known for stage, television, and film roles, include Messeret Stroman Wheeler (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Sopranos, Law & Order); Zach Grenier (leading player on The Good Wife,Tony nominee for 33 Variations, awarded “Atlantic Stage Co. Favorite”), and Emily Zacharias (Likely Stories director/actor, We Crashed, Law & Order, NY Stage Veteran). Musician Bill Tally leads the orchestra on keyboard. The band also includes Ben Williams on trombone, and Ahmondylla Best on African percussion. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, go to somadultschool.org.

MEDICARE

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD (OEP)

If you change your mind about a Medicare Advantage Plan for any reason, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from January 1 to March 31 gives you the opportunity to make changes. This is the last month until OEP 2024. During this time you can: • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another • Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original (Parts A and B) Medicare Yes, you can drop a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, but don’t count on a Medigap (aka Supplement) plan if that is your intention. Remember you are subject to medical underwriting and Supplement carriers can choose not to enroll you. What if you need to make changes to your plan outside of these times? In certain situations, such as a move or loss of coverage, you might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). During this time, you can make changes to your Medicare plan(s). For example, moving from one geographic area to another might qualify you for a SEP, if your network is not available at your new home. During your SEP, you can switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan or Part D plan or return to Original Medicare without penalty. In some situations, you might also be able to enroll in a Medigap plan without the requirement for medical underwriting (called guaranteed issue rights). If you believe you might qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or are in the Open Enrollment Period, please reach out to me for a no obligation consultation. I can help answer all your questions. • Add a Part D prescription plan • Drop a Part D prescription plan

ELDER CARE

Neighborhood House Nursery School 100 Years & Growing!

Imagine this situation: A child moves into parent’s home with his family, with no lease and no written agreement. He stays there for decades, and at some point, the parent dies. Someone else is Executor of the Estate. What rights does this child have, if any? Does the Estate have any obligation to let him stay there? Or imagine this: An aging parent moves into a child’s home, perhaps a “mother-daughter” structure or perhaps using a bedroom within the main part of the house, with an informal arrangement for sharing expenses. What rights does the parent have, and what obligations? Suppose the child has to sell the house, or loses the house? If the parent applies for Medicaid to pay for long-term care, will her contributions for household expenses be treated as “gifts to the child,” resulting in a transfer penalty and denial of benefits? Shared occupancy agreements can prevent miscommunication and problems. You can specify monthly occupancy/rent cost; right to remain for a while if the homeowner dies or moves out; sharing utilities or repairs; and more. Mutual agreements create rights. However, without any documentation, the agreement may end abruptly if the homeowner dies, divorces, or moves. Unfortunately, oral handshake agreements can be difficult to enforce. Careful planning can prevent a crisis. Formality at the start, like a prenuptial agreement, can prevent huge problems later. FAMILY ELDER CARE PLANNING: PROTECT YOUR OCCUPANTS WITH DOCUMENTS

PROTECT YOUR PUP While our dogs enjoy this unseasonably warm weather, staff of the Maplewood Health Department want to remind you about our leash law. Per Maplewood Township Ordinance 113-12, any dog on public streets or in any of the public places in the Township must be securely controlled by an adequate leash not more than six feet long. In addition, no dog, leashed or unleashed, is permitted on any basketball, tennis, or paddle tennis courts within the Township of Maplewood. There are many good reasons to keep your dog on a leash. It protects your dog from accident, injury, and even illness. It protects your neighbors, as well as their animals and property, from dog-related incidents and damage. And it protects you, the owner or caretaker, from uncomfortable, unpredictable or even tragic situations. It is also important to keep your dog off our local sports courts. In addition to being unpleasant and frustrating for residents using the courts, dog waste damages the surface. Equally important, the surface of a court can be bad for our dogs’ paws. Courts are abrasive, slippery, and can get extremely hot. The Maplewood Police Department recently received complaints about dog violations and will increase efforts to enforce this ordinance. Violators are subject to a fine of $50 for the first offense, $100 for a second offense, and up to $500 for any subsequent offenses. Please call the Maplewood Health Department at (973) 762-8120, ext. 2002 with any questions or concerns about responsible pet ownership in Maplewood.
