Like Nana Brown, Tara and Dale are entrenched in the community. Between the two of them, they are involved as volunteers and board members of several not for profit organizations. Tara elaborates, “I’m on the board of two non-profits. One is the Valerie Fund that provides care for kids with cancer and blood illnesses. My youngest was born with a condition called hemoglobin SC , which is very similar to sickle cell. While he continues to be very healthy, we’ve always volunteered with Valerie Fund. It’s based in Maplewood and has centers in eight hospitals around NJ, NY, and PA.” When she’s not volunteering, Tara works as the Chief HR Officer for Mutual of America, which provides retirement services to nonprofits and small businesses. She’s also an avid runner and has a wall full of ribbons, plaques, and medals for marathons and half marathons. She laughed, “My joints hurt just looking at it.” Dale is equally athletic and has coached both football and basketball youth leagues. Sometime in 2018, Dale decided to leave the world of hedge funds and finance to start his own company, Adaptive Growth Leadership. Tara shared, “After 2020, companies reawakened to the prospects of not having enough people of color in their organizations. He helps them to develop an environment that is inclusive and welcoming of diverse talent while providing young professionals and students with the skills and tools they need to thrive.” There is no doubt that Nana Brown and the entire Favors family leaves an indelible mark on the SOMA community.
