and fostering a love for the game. Dan serves as the president of the board of CHS Ultimate, a registered nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the growth and development of ultimate frisbee. CHS Ultimate operates several local teams for middle- and high-school players and is 100% financially independent from SOMSD. Their dedication to ultimate frisbee and the community is steadfast. Dan says, “Ultimate frisbee is primarily self-refereed and stands out among sports for its unique emphasis on the ‘Spirit of the Game,’ where players uphold the principles of fair play and integrity on and off the field.” Dan also notes, “It’s about fostering a sense of community through competition and cooperative play and instilling values that transcend the field.” Thea echoes this sentiment, saying, “Coaching Sparkle Motion has been a great experience. Seeing the players grow as individuals and in leadership roles is very rewarding.” Thea also enjoys being part of the founding leadership of the SOMA Fox Running Club (SFRC), an inclusive community of runners of all speeds and abilities. She shares, “We hold weekly structured running meetups to promote the joys of running to our community, and host local races and events. Everyone is welcome!” One fun event, Thea relates, is the annual “Cookie Run,” a tradition that sends runners through neighborhoods with porch stops for refreshments and cookies along the route. As they continue to champion the ‘spirit of the game’ and inspire the next generation of ultimate frisbee players, the Cogan-Drew Family represents all that makes the SOMA community so special.
