MEET THE COGAN-DREW FAMILY The Cogan-Drew Family journey began in Rhode Island, where Thea and Dan first crossed paths on the ultimate frisbee field. A mutual love for ultimate frisbee blossomed into a deep and lasting relationship that led them to New Haven, CT, where Thea pursued her graduate studies as a physician assistant.
Photography by Jamie Meier
Dan, a lifelong educator, co-founded an NYC-based education technology startup in 2013. He recalls, “In those days, ‘working from home’ only included an occasional Friday. After two years of lengthy commuting, we decided we needed to move closer to the city. Maplewood, the birthplace of ultimate frisbee, was an obvious choice.” Dan is proud that SOMSD was then, and still is today, a customer of their company. The Cogan-Drews settled in Maplewood with their two sons, Leo and Thomas. Thomas, now a 14-year-old rising sophomore at CHS, and Leo, a 19-year-old student at Carleton College, both inherited their parents’ love for ultimate frisbee and also play on competitive teams. Reflecting on their sons’ athletic journeys, Dan shares, “They played other sports, but ultimate captured their hearts in a way that no other sport could.” Thea adds, “Carleton College boasts a vibrant ultimate community with multiple teams including Div I and Div III programs for men and women.” Both Thea and Dan are invested in creating community through sports and exercise, and are deeply involved in the local ultimate frisbee community. Thea proudly helps coach JV Sparkle Motion, a high school female-matching team, nurturing young talents

and fostering a love for the game. Dan serves as the president of the board of CHS Ultimate, a registered nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the growth and development of ultimate frisbee. CHS Ultimate operates several local teams for middle- and high-school players and is 100% financially independent from SOMSD. Their dedication to ultimate frisbee and the community is steadfast. Dan says, “Ultimate frisbee is primarily self-refereed and stands out among sports for its unique emphasis on the ‘Spirit of the Game,’ where players uphold the principles of fair play and integrity on and off the field.” Dan also notes, “It’s about fostering a sense of community through competition and cooperative play and instilling values that transcend the field.” Thea echoes this sentiment, saying, “Coaching Sparkle Motion has been a great experience. Seeing the players grow as individuals and in leadership roles is very rewarding.” Thea also enjoys being part of the founding leadership of the SOMA Fox Running Club (SFRC), an inclusive community of runners of all speeds and abilities. She shares, “We hold weekly structured running meetups to promote the joys of running to our community, and host local races and events. Everyone is welcome!” One fun event, Thea relates, is the annual “Cookie Run,” a tradition that sends runners through neighborhoods with porch stops for refreshments and cookies along the route. As they continue to champion the ‘spirit of the game’ and inspire the next generation of ultimate frisbee players, the Cogan-Drew Family represents all that makes the SOMA community so special.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
PIZZA DOUGH 1/4 oz active dry yeast (1 pkg) 1 cup 100 degree water (+ 2 Tbsp) pinch of sugar 4 cups AP flour 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (plus oil for the bowl) GARLIC OIL 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 6-8 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed Zucchini Grilled Pizza 10 oz fontina cheese, shredded or grated 3 lbs zucchini, peeled into ribbons 3 oz parmesan cheese, shredded or grated 12 oz fresh ricotta cheese 4 tsp fresh thyme, minced 1 lemon Kosher or pink salt, for finishing GRILLED ZUCCHINI PIZZA Prep Time: 1 hour + 1 hr 30 mins resting time Cook Time: 30 mins • Servings: 3 INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
PIZZA DOUGH 1. Whisk the yeast and pinch of sugar into the water and let stand 5 - 10 mins until it begins to bubble or foam 2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, mix the flour and the salt. 3. With the mixer set to low, add the water/yeast mixture and the olive oil. 4. Knead for about 5 mins, until the dough is smooth. If it’s too dry, add an additional tbsp or two of water (mixing well before adding the next). By hand: stir together all ingredients and knead on the counter for 8-10 mins. 5. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 mins until the dough is very smooth and then shape it into a ball. 6. Place the dough in a well-oiled large bowl, turning the dough so it is coated on all sides and cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. 7. Allow it to rise at room temperature until doubled in size, 1 - 1 1/2 hrs. 8. Lightly punch down the down and divide the dough into 8 even pieces. Roughly shape the divided pieces into balls and cover with plastic wrap. 9. Working with one piece at a time and leaving the others covered, use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a round or oblong shape about 6x10 inches. if the dough springs back and loses its shape, cover it and set aside for a few mins before re-rolling (this allows the dough to relax). 10. Line a sheet tray with wax paper or parchment and layer the rolled pizza doughs on it between sheets of wax or parchment paper.
11. The pizzas can be made immediately or you can cover the tray with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to four hours or freeze). ZUCCHINI PIZZA 1. Sprinkle a little salt over the zucchini ribbons and place them in a colander. Allow the zucchini to sit while you prep the other ingredients. After it’s sat for several minutes, blot it with paper towels to remove the excess moisture. 2. Preheat your gas grill set to medium heat. Prep all of your ingredients and arrange on a tray with the garlic olive oil, a pastry brush, a microplane or small grater, and large tongs. 3. Working with two pizzas at a time, brush one side of the dough with the garlic oil. Place the doughs, oiled side down, on the grill and grill until golden brown, about 2 mins 4. Brush the top of the dough with garlic oil and flip them to the other side and reduce the flame to low. 5. Work quickly and top with each round with one eighth of the ingredients in this order: fontina cheese. zucchini ribbons, parmesan cheese, spoonfuls of ricotta, and a sprinkle of thyme. Using the microplane or grater, zest a little lemon peel over the pizzas. 6. Add just a drizzle of the garlic oil over the top and then lower the lid and allow the pizzas to cook until the cheese has melted and the underside is browned, about 4-5 mins. 7. Remove to a cutting board and sprinkle with salt to taste. Slice, serve and repeat with remaining dough and ingredients.

Local runner Andrew Masterleo (32yo) of Maplewood is the Athlete of the Month. With a broad smile and positive attitude, he brings serious speed to the SOMA Fox Running Club. If you’re out on the roads of Maplewood before 6 am, you’re likely to see Andrew’s brightly illuminated figure streaking across the horizon. His dedication to training has borne fruit in the past year, with new personal re
cords in the 5 km (Montclair Donut Run), 15 km (Utica Boilermaker Road Race), and Marathon (Baystate Marathon). His biggest performance in an official race came in March, with a scalding time at the Philadelphia Love Run Half Marathon. His crowning achievement, however, came one week later at the South Moun tain Reservation. Each spring, SOMA Fox Running Club holds a “Reservoir Chal lenge,” encouraging runners to run fast and run often - counterclockwise around the 1.66-mile path encircling the Orange Reservoir. After considerable persuasion, Andrew agreed to race Brian Wysocki (35yo and a long time and top ranked cross country runner) of South Orange for one single circuit. They matched strides for the first half-loop. Brian surged ahead on three separate occasions, with Andrew covering the move each time. The crowd of nearly twenty cheered on as Andrew broke away, winning bragging rights for himself and all of Maplewood until next year.

“Location, Location, Location” is the most often shared advice given in real estate. Using a local, local, local real estate agent should be the next step. I have been a local realtor in the South Orange/Maplewood Community for over seventeen years. SOMA has given me a place to raise my family, earn a living, and make lifelong friends. Because SOMA has given to me, I feel it’s important to give back to SOMA and the people that live here. Through the years, I have sponsored and supported many community causes that include Maplewoodstock, HOLA Fest, The SOMA Art Studio Tour, The Achieve Foundation, CHS Musicals, MEND, Spooky Spiotta Halloween Party, The FOX Running Club, Dickens Christmas Village, and many more. Giving back feels good and allows me to meet other community members that offer diverse interests, skills, and talent. I have come to know some terrific contractors, teachers, doctors, veterinarians, landscapers, stagers, painters, and other professionals that make SOMA special. As a local agent, I have the advantage of meeting potential buyers at my Open Houses and effectively connecting them to your home. If you are a buyer, my in-depth knowledge of homes about to hit the market gives you a significant edge over those working with agents outside SOMA. I am a local, local, local real estate agent that has lived and watched SOMA grow for the past twenty-four years. Call me if you are interested in selling your home. REAL ESTATE

HOME DESIGN “Oh my gosh! I love those pendant lights,” said a potential home buyer. I was sitting at an Open House for a listing; a house I had just completed a whole-house renovation on and was now selling. We were in the kitchen looking at a pair of hanging pendant lights (see picture in the ad below). “Aren’t they great?” I responded. “And the beauty is, they’re repurposed.” “How so?” she countered. “When I bought this house, the milk glass globes were actually in the bathrooms as flush mount ceiling lights. Before the demo began, I took them, knowing I would use them in my design somewhere in the house. Once I realized how cool they would be as pendants, I took them to a lighting repair shop and had them retrofitted to become these fabulous lights.” “Wow, that’s awesome. I never thought about how you can kind of mix and match lighting parts,” she exclaimed. “Whenever I’m with buyers who are house shopping, I try to look for the original fixtures to be used as they are,
or how they can be repurposed into something new and fresh,” I said.
“I have a friend who does that with furniture!” she exclaimed.
“How so?” I asked.
“Well, she’ll buy old furniture, usually really cheap, and then recover it in the most beautiful, stylish, colorful fabric she can find. Her pieces are gorgeous!” “Sounds amazing! And also a great lesson in how to repurpose,” I said. “And those pieces won’t end up in a landfill,” she added.
“Exactly,” I agreed.

Finding the perfect TV size for your home is crucial for an excellent entertainment experience. A screen that’s too small can feel disconnected, while an oversized screen might overwhelm your space. Here’s a concise guide to help you select the ideal TV size. Measure the distance from your seating area to the TV location. The best viewing distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the TV’s diagonal size. For example, a 50-inch TV should be viewed from 6.25 to 10.5 feet away. Larger rooms can handle a bigger TV without it dominating the space, while smaller rooms may benefit from a more modest size. Higher resolution TVs, like 4K models, enable closer viewing without noticeable pixelation. This allows you to opt for a larger screen even in smaller spaces. For multi purpose rooms used for casual viewing or gaming, a moderately sized screen may be more suitable. LIGHTING AND AUDIO
Ensure everyone in the room has a good view of the TV. Wider viewing angles are crucial in larger rooms or when seating is spread out. Some TVs offer better off-angle viewing than others. Investing in a slightly larger TV can be wise if you anticipate changes in your viewing habits or room layout since TVs typically last several years. For practical examples, a small living room with an 8-10 feet viewing distance is ideal for a 40-50 inch TV. A medium living room with a 10-12 feet viewing distance works well with a 55-65 inch TV. A large living room with a 12-15 feet viewing distance can accommodate a 70-85 inch TV. Happy viewing!

FINANCIAL FOCUS Are you concerned about outliving your finances? Many individuals, including current retirees, share the worry of depleting their assets during retirement years. According to a study by Cerulli Associates, 58% of retirement savers across all age groups name this as their top retirement fear. This anxiety can significantly impact your retirement quality. However, there’s no need to panic - proactive measures can prevent the risk of running out of funds. Here are steps to consider: • Estimate your retirement expenses: Gain a clear understanding of your retirement financial needs. Some costs will decrease after retirement, such as work-related expenses, while others, like medical costs, may rise. Knowledge of your retirement financial requirements can alleviate fears of financial insecurity. • Boost pre-retirement savings: Utilize your peak earning years leading up to retirement by maximizing contributions to your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement plans. • Optimize Social Security benefits: Delaying Social Security claims until your full retirement age (between 66 and 67) or even until age 70 can increase monthly benefits. • Consider re-entering the workforce: Returning to work part-time or consulting can enhance retirement savings and delay Social Security claims, providing additional financial support. • Reduce retirement expenditures: Downsizing living arrangements or relocating to a more affordable area can significantly cut costs. Additionally, take advantage of senior discounts and eliminate unnecessary expenses like unused streaming services. • Seek income-generating investments: Adjust your investment portfolio to include more income-producing assets while maintaining growth potential to combat inflation. By reinforcing your financial stability pre and post-retirement, you can minimize concerns about outliving your financial resources.

FROM THE DOCTOR HOW TO PREVENT DAILY NECK PAIN Waking up with neck pain can quickly set a negative tone for your day. You barely get out of bed before the pain threatens to disrupt your day. How can you prevent morning neck pain? ASSESS YOUR PILLOW: Pillows support your neck while you sleep. A pillow should follow the natural curve of your spine, cradling your head and reducing pressure on your neck. Choose a pillow based on your body type and preferred sleeping position. REVISE YOUR BEDTIME ROUTINE: Before getting into bed, perform stretching exercises to relax your muscles. Avoid reading in bed with multiple pillows supporting you and your neck bent. PRIORITIZE SLEEP: Establish a consistent sleep schedule to help your body relax and improve sleep quality. MAINTAIN A REGULAR EXERCISE ROUTINE: Exercise not only enhances physical fitness but also promotes better sleep. We recommend exercises tailored to your body structure and lifestyle after reviewing digital films with you. LIMIT SCREEN TIME: Power down your phone before bed and keep screens off until morning. Taking a break from electronic devices at night can benefit your sleep. ADDRESS DAILY STRESSORS: Daily stressors can impact neck and back pain. Physical, chemical, and emotional stresses affect your spine’s structure. Physical stressors may result from lack of exercise, poor posture, or untreated injuries. Chemical stressors can include dehydration, poor diet, or alcohol consumption. Emotional stressors encompass thoughts, grief, anger, relationships, or work-related stress. Our comprehensive treatment programs can aid in neck pain recovery, ensuring you wake up refreshed and prepared for the day.

FROM THE DOCTOR
TMJ DISORDERS
Many people notice clicking in their jaws and dismiss it as unimportant, but this issue can lead to significant problems. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull, and dysfunctions in this joint affect the surrounding muscles and ligaments. TMJ disorders can cause issues like jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. While many people refer to these conditions simply as TMJ, “TMD” stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. This disorder affects about 5-12% of the population. Individuals typically have two TMJ joints, one on each side, and dysfunction can impact one or both joints. Those between 20-40 years old are most susceptible. TMJ symptoms vary widely and may include jaw pain, facial pain, shoulder or neck pain, stiffness, jaw popping, headaches, earaches, and changes in how teeth fit together. Factors contributing to TMJ problems include jaw injuries, teeth grinding, arthritis, malocclusion, and stress. Certain habits can worsen symptoms, such as using teeth as tools, poor posture, chewing on pens, and nighttime grinding. Treatment often begins with nonsurgical options like physical therapy (PT), mouth guards, and injections. Medications may also help, while surgery remains an option if other treatments fail. Typically, a combination of a mouth guard and PT leads to improvement. PT focuses on strengthening jaw muscles, soft tissue mobilization, and developing a home exercise program to improve posture and reduce neck strain. A thorough evaluation precedes any treatment plan.

COALITION ON RACE ANTI-BIAS/ANTI-RACISM TRAINING BY THE COMMUNITY COALITION ON RACE As part of the Coalition on Race’s mission to achieve racial integration, inclusion, and equity, we host trainings for organizations – social service agencies, nonprofits, small businesses, chambers of commerce and local governing bodies – seeking change and improvement through anti racist goals. Dismantling racism requires understanding one’s own biases as well as understanding the impact of structural racism. Our training method involves presentations, honest conversations, large and small group discussions, experiential exercises, role plays, and additional resources for reading and learning. In 2024, with funding from The Maplewood Foundation, we developed and delivered trainings to the Maplewood Police Department. We focused on understanding unconscious bias, personal strategies for addressing biases that may interfere with work outcomes, and the evolving language of inclusion. We also conducted a training for the SOMA Adult School board of directors and staff, focusing on anti racism and anti-bias practices in service delivery and ways to assess the organization’s progress toward diversity and inclusion goals. Our Community Engagement Committee will conduct Deconstructing Racism workshops on Mondays this September from 7-9 p.m. through the SOMA Adult School at Columbia High School. MIND BODY MAKEOVER MIND BODY MAKEOVER BY CALLIE EXAS NUTRITION & WELLNESS Ellen Hockley - a SOMA resident, business owner and maplewood mom attended Raising Women - a Local Day Retreat to Reignite Your Spark hosted by myself, Callie and my colleague Marta Bukowska. A mind body makeover is about helping you tune out all the noise to better work with your body for more energy, resilience and stamina. To prioritize Ellen’s wellbeing and teach her how to better manage her stress for more energy, we focused first on stabilizing her nervous system through breath. This is one the most powerful ways to regulate the body’s stress response. To awaken and bolster her resilience for better metabolic function we then offered a 2 minute cold plunge. Cold plunging is an effective way to improve sleep, boost immunity and temporarily increase metabolic function. This can improve the body’s blood sugar regulation and reduce inflammation status. Lastly we discussed nutrition mindset, practices, and strategies to honor her body by focusing on the addition of nutrient dense foods and blood sugar balance. We emphasized nourishing eating practices for mood stability, and her hormonal wellbeing as she moves through her 40s.. Ultimately, a mind body makeover is about deepening your connection to yourself, your body’s innate needs so that you can process and cope with whatever life is throwing your way. If you are interested in learning more about mind body wellness or attending the next event, head to www.callieexas.com
