MEET THE COGAN-DREW FAMILY The Cogan-Drew Family journey began in Rhode Island, where Thea and Dan first crossed paths on the ultimate frisbee field. A mutual love for ultimate frisbee blossomed into a deep and lasting relationship that led them to New Haven, CT, where Thea pursued her graduate studies as a physician assistant.

Dan, a lifelong educator, co-founded an NYC-based education technology startup in 2013. He recalls, “In those days, ‘working from home’ only included an occasional Friday. After two years of lengthy commuting, we decided we needed to move closer to the city. Maplewood, the birthplace of ultimate frisbee, was an obvious choice.” Dan is proud that SOMSD was then, and still is today, a customer of their company. The Cogan-Drews settled in Maplewood with their two sons, Leo and Thomas. Thomas, now a 14-year-old rising sophomore at CHS, and Leo, a 19-year-old student at Carleton College, both inherited their parents’ love for ultimate frisbee and also play on competitive teams. Reflecting on their sons’ athletic journeys, Dan shares, “They played other sports, but ultimate captured their hearts in a way that no other sport could.” Thea adds, “Carleton College boasts a vibrant ultimate community with multiple teams including Div I and Div III programs for men and women.” Both Thea and Dan are invested in creating community through sports and exercise, and are deeply involved in the local ultimate frisbee community. Thea proudly helps coach JV Sparkle Motion, a high school female-matching team, nurturing young talents
