NIMITZ FOOTBALL Augustus Parlaying Work Ethic Into Opportunities The Country Boy

\\ By Matt Malatesta

THE NIMITZ COUGARS CARRIED THE BANNER FOR ALDINE ISD LAST YEAR IN DISTRICT PLAY. Coach Cornelius Harmon’s squad has been to the postseason the past three seasons and don’t appear to be slowing down. Taking snaps since his freshman year has been quarterback Albert Brown Jr., who has a pair of targets in Ke’Lyn Washom and Malachi Augustus. They are electric and college prospects on the edge. “It was my uncle (Elijah Mitchell) who really inspired me to pursue football,” Augustus said. “I saw how he went from high school to college to the NFL (San Francisco). Knowing someone who has made it that far gives you a lot of hope that you can do it too.” The returning first-team, all-district selection has big plans for his future as well. “I think I’ve really improved over the offseason and summer, and want to build on last year’s stats,” he said. “I’m not a big-headed type of guy and also try to do my best for my team. I’m just staying focused on every practice rep and every game to put up some stats and live out my dream.” The 6-foot-1 playmaker has picked up from the likes of Louisiana Tech to Washington, so he’s on his way. “I’m really just a country boy at heart,” he laughed. “I like to fish, hunt and ride four-wheelers with my family in Louisiana. It’s no surprise that I love the (Dallas) Cowboys, which means my favorite player is Cee Dee Lamb.” When he is not working out or watching film, he’s diving into his favorite movies on rotation. “I can watch Home Alone, Let It Shine and Friday over and over,” he said. “Those make me relax and laugh.” As district-play looms and the Friday Night Lights get brighter, Augustus locks in and goes to work. His playmaking is undeniable, and he loves the big moment. It’s just in the genes.
