SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Aldine Community, Have you ever had a jaw-dropping moment where you’re not sure if you’re having an out-of-body experience or if you’ve stepped into another realm? I felt that way when I walked onto the turf of the newly designed W.W. Thorne Stadium for the ribbon cutting ceremony just moments after addressing our community at the State of the District event in our new Community Center at the south end of the stadium. The rain started drizzling but it wasn’t going to rain on our parade. This was the moment we’ve all been waiting for after watching the previous W.W. Thorne Stadium torn completely down and rebuilt over the past two years. The Thorne family were in attendance to be part of the celebration to honor their father’s legacy, the namesake of the stadium: Superintendent W.W. Thorne who served the Aldine Independent School District from 1958-73.

DR. KIMBERLEY BOOKER
PAUL SHANKLIN Vice President
The ribbon cutting for the new stadium was just one of the monumental beginnings of the school year. Other experiences came straight from the classrooms. On Mondays, I start my week off visiting campuses and not only does it give me joy to walk the halls and see the work, it gives me assurance of why I began this journey almost 25 years ago. It’s all about the students. When we created a strategic plan and defined a portrait of a graduate, it’s all about the students. It’s always been all about the students. Accelerate At Aldine ISD, we remain committed to providing a rigorous and enriching educational experience that prepares every student for college, career, and life. Our strategic plan, Accelerate, will guide us as we build on our established strong foundations. Our strategic priorities—Students First, Instructional Excellence, Thriving Teams, and Aligned Systems—are at the core of this plan. The Portrait of a Graduate, which outlines the qualities every Aldine ISD student should possess by the time they graduate, is central to these priorities. #AldineImpact The new school year began with an inspiring Convocation featuring astronaut José Hernández, who reminded us of a single teacher’s profound impact on a child’s life. We’re fortunate to have outstanding educators like Ana Cuevas Nicasio and Bailey Steffek, who were recently named the Texas Association for Bilingual Education’s 2024 Elementary Bilingual Teacher of the Year and Secondary ESL Teacher of the Year, respectively. Their achievements, along with those of our students, reflect the hard work and dedication within our district. Our students continue to raise the bar. This year, 88 of our students earned College Board National Recognition—a 76% increase from last year. Over 75 students received nearly 100 AP Scholar Awards, a 46% increase from the previous year. The Class of 2024 has excelled, with 86% earning a College, Career, and Military Ready (CCMR) designation, 92% submitting college applications, 63% completing FAFSA/TASFA applications, and securing over $50 million in scholarships. New Initiatives/Bond 2023 Projects As we strive to be innovative, I am proud of our ongoing initiatives, like the HEAL (Health Education and Learning) program at Nimitz High School, which allows students hands-on experience at a mock hospital and mentorship opportunities all in partnership with Memorial Hermann. There is much to be excited about in Aldine ISD, from the new partnership between United Flight System and the Aviation Program at Davis High School, to a 1.8% increase in salary for all employees, and the start of the first three projects from our $1.8 billion-dollar Bond 2023. Thank you for trusting us to serve you and your students. I look forward to seeing you at the football games at the new W.W. Thorne Stadium. Here’s to a fantastic school year and making a lasting #AldineImpact together! With Aldine Pride, Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney Superintendent of Schools

Our strength is going to be this senior class. Coming in, this is our third year here with this staff and we’ve watched these guys grow up to become the most well-organized group we’ve seen so far. Plus, our interior – our box-play is going to be very much improved. The culture here is really about grit, hard work and the weight room, which I feel we’ve addressed this offseason.

Ball is Life
It’s Not Just a Game for Aldine’s Wiser \\ By Matthew Ogle
THE ALDINE HIGH MUSTANGS ARE TURNING THE CORNER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF COACH CIRILO OJEDA’S LEADERSHIP, AND DEFENSIVE TACKLE KEISHON WISER IS ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES OF THE MOVEMENT. “Everybody has a great drive here, despite what other people might think about us,” Wiser said. “It shows in the weight room and at practice every day. I feel like this year we’ll have a great chance at winning some games and proving the doubters wrong.” The 2023 second-team, all-district selection has become the team’s voice, both in the locker room and on the field, which is a result of the mentality he personifies. “Football is my life,” said Wiser. “Everybody in my family played it. It’s a physical game, but I’m a physical person. I like to be hands-on with things and it’s also a perfect outlet for emotions like stress and anger. If something is going on with me, I can take it out on the field. “I still have a team that I play for, but once you’re on the field, it’s always going to be you versus the man in front of you.” Wiser doesn’t just talk the talk. He lets his actions speak for him. It’s for that reason that he has been given the opportunity to play collegiately at Stephen F. Austin State University next fall. “The coaches there (SFA) made it feel like home,” he said. “They put a lot of time and effort into their team which is something that speaks to me. Plus, I want to stay pretty close to my Mom. The program and investment were perfect.” Considering the impact that the sport has had on his upbringing, it’s only natural that he intends to spend his future around it. “I’m going to major in Education and Kinesiology,” Wiser said. “I want to come back to Houston one day and be a coach. I’m going to teach the next generation the same way I’ve been taught, since I’ve been shown how to be a better man in general from playing this sport. So, that’s something I hope to pass on.” As he suits up with the Mustangs for the final time in 2024, it should be made perfectly clear what Keishon Wiser is all about. The young man was born for the game.

We’re going to be scrappy this year. There’s plenty of potential on offense for us, but I think we’re going to be more sound defensively. ALDINE ISD LAUNCHES NEW 5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN, ACCELERATE Aldine ISD unveiled a new strategic
Accelerate continues AISD’s current journey and builds on those strong foundations. The plan is the result of comprehensive listening and collaborative working ses sions with AISD’s stakeholders — the ini tiative involved more than 500 students, staff, district leaders, and business/com munity partners. This collective effort underscores the district’s dedication to building a framework that will guide our shared hopes, dreams, and vision for each and every one of our students. Through robust dialogue, compre hensive diagnostics, and stakeholder engagement, the district’s strategic priorities for Accelerate emerged: Students First, Instructional Excellence, Thriving Teams, and Aligned Systems. The commitments outlined in the Por trait of a Graduate, which is at the heart
of the strategic plan, underline the pri orities. The guiding model sets forth the qualities that every Aldine ISD student should embody before walking across the stage to accept their diploma. Monitoring progress is critical as the district implements the new strategic plan. Using a guided and deliberate project plan that aligns with the Board of Trustees’ goals, the district will track and share its mission measures to en sure AISD is on course. “While we have a new set of priorities to guide our work, we will never lose sight of what we’ve promised in our mission: Aldine ISD will provide a rigorous and enriching educational experience that prepares every student for success in college, career, and life. “Together, we will accelerate toward an empowered tomorrow for every student.”
plan during Convocation for staff before the start of the new school year. The plan will provide the foundation for the district’s efforts over the next five years as it seeks to fulfill its new priorities. “ Accelerate , which spans between 2024 and 2029, will propel our work forward and further drive student success,” said Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney. “By amplifying what’s effective, refin ing strategies, and swiftly addressing areas that require improvement, we will advance our work and increase student achievement for all Aldine ISD students.” In 2019, the district unveiled the stra tegic plan A New Way Forward . The bold plan served as the framework to ensure all students had access to high-quality schools and learning experiences that would prepare them for their future.
STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
ALDINE ISD PORTRAIT of a GRADUATE The Portrait of a Graduate outlines our commitment to reflect, learn, lead, and navigate the world in which we are living. We believe these aims will position students to fulfill their potential as leaders through a reflective, purposeful, and impactful approach.

ALDINE ISD STUDENTS EARN NEARLY 100 AP SCHOLAR AWARDS FROM COLLEGE BOARD
Every fall, the College Board’s AP Pro gram recognizes high school students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement through their performance on multiple Advanced Placement Exams. Students can include these significant academic distinctions on college and scholarship applications, among other things. Aldine ISD is proud to announce that 77 students across the district earned one
or more remarkable distinctions as AP Scholars of 2024 for their exemplary achievement on AP exams during the 2023-2024 school year. The students earned nearly 100 AP awards, a 46% increase from the previous year. “We are incredibly proud of our stu dents’ dedication and achievement in advanced academics,” said Dr. Susan Pelezo, executive director of advanced academics. “The significant increase in
AP awards this year reflects their hard work, our teachers’ commitment, and our community’s support. These distinctions are not just accolades; they represent our students’ readiness for the challenges of higher education and beyond. Aldine ISD remains committed to our CCMR (College, Career, and Military Readiness) goals in providing every student with the opportunities and resources they need to excel.”

One of the biggest things in year one with the team was to lay the foundation and get those fundamentals out there to make sure the kids understand what we’re trying to accomplish. There’s still going to be some hardships we’ll need to endure and correct. But our mantra last year was ‘bit by bit’ – building it up from the ground. While this fall marks both the first and last year that Williams competes for Davis, he is locked in to what could potentially lead to a goal the Falcons last achieved in 2014. “I’m trying to go in, win all the individual battles and help the team win a district title before making the playoffs,” he said. “We need to come together as a team, make a better bond and put the work in to reach those goals.” Williams is already one of the more refined defenders in the district, which should be made perfectly clear at the end of season when the season accolades are distributed. If all goes according to plan, he will have made his college commitment and the Falcons make its first playoff appearance in four years. His patience will have paid off.
team’s three captains by head coach Kelvin Chatham. “It’s a no-fly zone where I’m at – no ball is getting caught,” said Williams. “Being the last line of defense comes with a lot of responsibility, but I know that I’m up for the challenge. “If there were a player I aim to be like, it would be Richard Sherman (former Seattle Seahawks defensive back). I liked the attitude and mentality he had during his prime.” Naturally, there’s more that goes on behind the scenes that fans don’t get to see on Friday nights. “Hours of training, attending camps, working out and eating the right foods – even though I love shrimp alfredo – makes me the player I’m trying to be. “As a person, people might not know that I’m really into history and anime. One Piece and Naruto have been some of my favorite ones to watch.”
WHEN DRAKE WILLIAMS TRANSFERRED OVER FROM WALTRIP TWO YEARS AGO, HE WAS GIVEN THE UNFORTUNATE NEWS THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO SIT OUT THE ENTIRE 2023 VARSITY FOOTBALL SEASON DUE TO UIL REGULATIONS. After patiently biding his time, he finally has the chance to showcase his skills. So, what influenced him to become a Falcon in the first place? “My decision was for the opportunities the program could provide me and my football career,” he said. “I thought that playing here could bring in more scouts and eyes from bigger colleges.” That has evidently been the case thus far, given that Williams currently has two offers – UNLV and Grambling State – with more expected to come as the season progresses. Collegiate aspirations aside, the 6-foot senior safety intends to lead by example after being named one of the

The four-week summer infusion ex perience at Aldine ISD and Memorial Hermann, a unique and exciting oppor tunity, was crucial to the preparation of incoming ninth-grade students accept ed into the HEAL (Health Education and Learning) Program at Nimitz High School. Memorial Hermann designed the summer schedule to excite the students pursuing a pathway in the medical field. Everyone involved also provided students with the guidelines and the necessary skills and knowledge before the start of their first year this fall. The infusion exposed high school students to a unique opportunity to pursue HEAL’s five career pathways: medical imaging, nursing, non-clinical medical administration, pharmacy, and physical and occupational rehabilitation. Students gained expert insights and be hind-the-scenes experiences through immersive trips and tours. The students began their day at Nimitz HS before being transported to Memo rial Hermann Northeast Hospital. They gained a first-hand understanding of the culture and service standards, an overview of pathways and core skills needed to succeed (e.g., communica tion, professionalism), met and heard from various teams that comprise the Memorial Hermann System essential to the care of patients, and more. We are concentrating on building on last year, getting better and advancing to the next step. We had a couple of teams make it to Regionals for the first time ever, so we’re figuring out what it’ll take to reach the next goal. It’s not only the physical part we need to address, it’s also the mental preparation that comes with planning out a race. “ ” ~Coach Dan Bui EISENHOWER CROSS COUNTRY COACHES ALDINE ISD \\ FALL 2024 \\ vype.com

Rogers Projected to Become First Ike Runner to Reach State
OVER THE COURSE OF THE 2023 FALL SEASON, ONE ATHLETE EMERGED ONTO THE ALDINE ISD CROSS COUNTRY SCENE. Despite only being a freshman, Eisenhower’s Addison Rogers would go on to take the district by storm. She claimed the gold medal with a final time of 20:35 in the 5K race, before putting up a respectable performance in her Region II-6A debut. According to coach Dan Bui, she is “an extraordinary talent who is going to figure out the pressure of what it takes to advance to State, as both a cross country and track athlete”. We caught up with Rogers to get inside her head as she prepares to take that next step towards her ultimate goal. VYPE: Considering the high expectations your coaches have for you, what is the mindset as you approach this season? ROGERS: “It makes me want to work harder, knowing that people are rooting for me. I want to defend my district title and having these people backing me works as great motivation.” VYPE: Cross country can be a very difficult sport to compete in. What made you pursue the sport, and what has kept you in the race for this long? ROGERS: “I initially joined so I could be more conditioned for the track season. My coach thought that I could go really far in the sport, so I’ve stuck with it from there.” VYPE: What compels you to compete in both sports throughout the school year? ROGERS: “It starts with my family, since they’ve always encouraged me. Also, when I see that my times keep dropping or I set a PR, my competitive side really kicks in and makes me want to keep improving.” VYPE: Do you have any siblings? Are they athletes too? ROGERS: “I have four other siblings, and I’m the second-youngest next to my twin. I’m actually the only current athlete in the group. I’m the one who really likes to compete like that.” VYPE: You’re still a sophomore, so you have plenty of high school left. Do you have an idea of what you might want to do in the future after you graduate? ROGERS: “I want to be a surgeon. I also want to go to a school for track too – maybe LSU or Arkansas. But for a career, that’s been one of the paths I’ve been thinking about. Mainly for the money.”

NIMITZ STUDENT EARNS TOP AWARD AT THE 2024 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CONTEST
The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) proudly acknowledged the exceptional achievements of Texas students who took part in the National History Day (NHD) contest held at the University of Maryland from June 9-13. These outstanding young historians displayed their passion for history, demonstrated remarkable research and presentation skills, and represented Texas with distinction. Out of approximately 2,900 students from all 50 states, international schools, and U.S. territories, one Texan stood out. Nimitz High School senior Tori White finished 2nd in a 64-person competition for her performance titled “Red Light! Gladys West & the Glob al Positioning System” in the Senior Individual Performance category. Under the theme for this year’s NHD, “Turning Points in History,” students explored narratives that offered new perspec tives, untold stories, and transformative ideas. Tori’s performance was inspired by the life and work of Gladys Mae West, an African American mathematician renowned for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the Earth’s shape and the development of satel lite geodesy models that were later incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS). With a meticulous blend With Aldine ISD starting a new school year, there comes with it new integra tions. Over the summer, some Aldine ISD campuses were able to have a Lu Interactive Playground installed for their students. Ermel Elementary and Vines Primary are currently using these platforms to enhance their gym classes. “The idea was to allow for an interactive learning environment,” said Executive Director of Security and A/V Services, Dwayne Muston, “while still having stu dents learn through physical activity.” Ermel was able to utilize a projector screen for additional instructional learning, while Vines had an Active
of historical research and theatrical flair, Tori highlighted how her ground breaking work transformed navigation and technology worldwide. Drawing from West’s portrayal of the challeng ing yet transformative journey, White says “she’s been greatly influenced by Gladys West’s character and ambition, especially since I was able to speak with her first-hand.” “She is extremely intelligent and well versed in many subjects. Despite her circumstances: rural town, segregated communities, and lack of job opportu nities; she forged a path for herself and future Black Americans while pioneer ing a global technological system. Her story inspires me to exceed my limits and dream beyond the bounds of what I’ve experienced.” When asked what it means to place sec ond in the competition and represent herself, the school district, and Nimitz, White responded, “Being in a compet itive space with international scholars opened my mind to the fact that I, too, can achieve great things. When I began this journey six years ago, my name was Aldine or Texas, because I stood as a representative. In that role, I learned lessons of integrity and gratitude. I recognized that you shouldn’t speak for Floor placed into their movement room. Not only have students been enjoying these upgrades, staff at both campuses have also expressed how the inclusion of this technology has enhanced their classrooms. These improvements open new oppor tunities for the classrooms to explore, and as the technology department rolls out technology upgrades, the goal is to implement them into more campuses. The first two campuses to implement this new technology are ADSY (Addi tional Days School Year) schools. The district will collect feedback from both campuses and look to target additional schools for technology upgrades.
praise, but for the ones that will listen. For me, the competition itself evolved into a culmination of everything I’ve worked hard for, and placing second of ficially stamped the name of Tori White on the map.” Her performance was a testament to the power of history to educate, inspire, and drive change, and it underscored the importance of telling diverse and inclusive stories in our understand ing of the past. The TSHA celebrates Tori White and all the Texas students who participated in the NHD contest. By delving into the past and bringing forward stories that shape our present and future, these young historians are ensuring that the legacy of Texas and its people continue to be remembered and cherished for generations to come.
ALDINE ISD BRINGS TECHNOLOGY TO GYM
Aldine ISD is committed to finding innovative ways to enhance learning opportunities in its classrooms. The implementation of this interactive tech nology is just one of the ways in which Aldine is accomplishing these goals.

MACARTHUR VOLLEYBALL Volleyball is Quiet Amid Storm for Goffney The Monster
\\ By Matt Malatesta
AT 6-FOOT-1, LASHAE GOFFNEY CAN BE AN IMPOSING FIGURE ON THE BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL COURTS. With elite athleticism and great size, Goffney is a raw talent. But her story is bigger off the court than on. “High school has been a tough personal journey,” the senior said. “I’ve seen a lot of death in my immediate family and I’ve been through foster care. I’ve been on my own a lot of the time. Everyone expects you to be a happy, studious child all the time. In my situation, it’s not like that. “As a teenager, your problems can conquer you and disrupts what you are trying to achieve. I’ve been in my head a lot. I feel like I’m at my tipping point and “Volleyball is what I look forward to,” she said. “It inspires me, and I know my teammates depend on me. It gives me purpose. I’m able to push all my problems aside during volleyball and I can channel my anger into the sport. It helps me push through, not break down or quit.” Goffney has exponentially improved over the past few seasons under the direction of coach Lynda Eastland. “My biggest improvement has been my ability to be coachable,” she said. “There comes a point when all of the things coach is telling you, sinks in. You allow it to sink in and you flip a switch.” Volleyball also drives her in the classroom. “It works both ways... to be a great volleyball player, you have to be a great student,” she said. “It inspires me in the classroom because it’s something I look forward to.” Her hard work has paid off in the classroom and she is chasing her dream of getting into medicine. “I’m pursuing biomedical science and want to get my Masters,” she said. “Ultimately, I want to be a doctor. Being in several hospital rooms with my biological and foster families, you can feel helpless. We didn’t know the questions to ask or who to even go to for the best care. That has really inspired me to help others.” With all of the chaos surrounding her life, she leans on her best friend. “I talk to God all the time,” she said. “He is the only person I can talk to, who understands me. He created me and knows who I am. Not, who people think you should be. “Before a game, I talk with God, just breathe and let it all go. Then I let the monster take over and it all comes out.” over the edge a lot of the time.” Volleyball is her happy place.
