The Process Manual

Link Refers to graphics or images placed on your InDesign page. By using File > Place to import or place these items, you will create a link, ensuring your page will print properly. Linked text Text that flows across two or more columns, but which is still connected, is said to be linked. Linked text is identified when selected by a plus (+) sign in the windowshade. Loaded graphic icon Once you choose a graphic or digital image to place on the page, a loaded graphic icon replaces the Pointer tool. When the loaded graphic icon is clicked, the graphic will be placed. The look of the loaded graphic icon will differ depending on the format of the graphic to be placed. Loaded text cursor Once you choose a text file to place on the page, a loaded text icon replaces the Pointer tool or I-beam. When the loaded text cursor is clicked, the text is placed. Lock An InDesign function allowing you to make items unmovable. To lock an element, select it, then go to Object > Lock. Low resolution Images with less than 150 dpi are considered low-resolution images. These images will not print correctly in your yearbook, often appearing blurry or pixelated. Margins The space bordering the text and images on the page. Marquee The dotted line that is shown when you use the Pointer tool or Zoom tool to draw a box around page elements. You can select multiple page elements by drawing a marquee with the Pointer tool, or you can zoom in to a precise area by drawing a marquee with the Zoom tool. Mask When an image is masked, it is combined with a shape so the image fits precisely within the shape. Master book An InDesign document meant to represent the entire yearbook. The master book is often broken into smaller, more manageable files using the File Builder plug-in. Master page Anything placed on a master page will be repeated on all pages of the publication. Master template A master template is used so that all page creation starts from the same point. Master templates are often set up ahead of time with all color, style and folio information already saved to make page creation easier. Megapixel A million-pixel image created with high-end digital cameras and scanners. The higher the pixel count of an image, the better and larger the image.
