Cursor The small, blinking line that appears in text when you click with the I-beam for writing and editing purposes. Delete Anchor Point tool An InDesign tool that deletes anchor points from created paths. Desktop The working environment on the computer screen. It includes the menu bar and background area of the screen. Windows can be open on the desktop, as well as in any application program. Dialog A box displayed on-screen in response to a command that involves making additional choices or setting specifications. Digital image An image that is either scanned or taken with a digital camera and can be manipulated using a program such as Adobe Photoshop, or placed on your page electronically. Direct Selection tool An InDesign tool used to manipulate the contents of frames. Display fonts More decorative typefaces usually used for headlines. Double-page spread Two facing pages of a yearbook. DPI (dots per inch) The number of halftone dots in an inch. Used to measure the amount of resolution of a digital image. Drop cap The first letter of a paragraph, enlarged to create a graphic effect. Drop shadow An InDesign feature that creates a shadowed effect behind text, images and other page elements. Dynamic range A measurement of tonal range between highlights and the shadows. A scanner should register and convert the tonal range as well as the fineness of the individual gradations. This determines how well the scanner can reproduce detail in dark areas.
