D r. Muhammad Shaukat is a pediatric gastroenterologist, seeing children from birth to 18 years of age, who have issues with their GI systems. He treats many issues, including feeding problems, abdominal pain, GERD, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, liver issues, celiac disease and others. Dr. Shaukat knew he wanted to go into the field of medicine as a high school student. He had the opportunity to spend a few days in the hospital taking care of his ailing grandmother. “I was touched by the caring behavior and loving attitude of the nurses and doctors towards their patients,” said Dr. Shaukat. Dr. Shaukat decided to focus on gastroenterology during his pediatric residency. “This specialty offers a very balanced blend of outpatient clinics, inpatient consults and procedures, which I really like,” he said. “Moreover, in pediatric gastroenterology, the cure rate from different diseases is much better than other subspecialties, and this is very fulfilling for me.” The most rewarding part of Dr. Shaukat’s job is when children come for follow-up visits and he sees the sense of relief and big smile on the faces of the children and their parents. “I want to be the healing hand for those who cannot express their pain and illness like adults do,” said Dr. Shaukat. “Children are the forebearers of the future. Healthy children mean a healthy community and a prosperous future nation.” Living and working in Joplin meets both Dr. Shaukat’s personal and professional needs, allowing more time available to care for his patients and also enjoying family time as well. He spends his free time with his family, taking his kids to outdoor activities and going out of town on the weekends. Dr. Shaukat also enjoys going to the gym, swimming and bicycling.
