TEAM UNSCREEN’S “ALTERNATIVE DEVICE FAIR”
Team Unscreen, a grassroots initiative devoted to redefining childhood by reducing reliance on smartphones, will host an “Alternative Device Fair” on Thursday, November 13, from 4–7 PM at the Baird Community Center in South Orange. Designed as a family-friendly, hands-on showcase, the event invites parents and kids to see, test, and compare non smartphone devices in real life. Representatives from leading tech-safety and kid-focused brands including Troomi, Bark, Pinwheel, and Light will be on-site to demo products and answer questions. “We want families to feel what’s possible beyond the all-or-nothing smartphone decision,” explains Dava Zuckerman. “This fair is about practical options. We offer tools that match a child’s stage, as well as a family’s values and budget.” Attendees can expect demo stations, expert Q&As, and simple decision guides that break down features like filtered calling, GPS, app whitelisting, time limits, and parent dashboards. “Parents deserve clarity, not jargon,” Zuckerman added. “We’re here to help them compare devices side-by-side and leave with a plan that feels calm and doable.” A community raffle will add to the fun, with prizes including a SunbeamWireless device, a nostalgic Tin Can Phone, and more. “We wanted this to feel fun, not preachy,” Zuckerman shares. “Kids can get curious, and parents can get answers.” Attendance is free. Families are encouraged to come early to allow time for demos and conversations. The Baird Community Center is located in the heart of South Orange, with ample space for hands-on exploration and vendor showcases.
