MEET THE SPEAR FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
The Spear family story is one of serendipitous meetings, calculated moves, and a commitment to community and adventure. Nicki and Ryan’s adventure began at Penn State University, where they crossed paths as students. Nicki explains, “Years later, we were both living in New York City and kept running into each other but never dated. The last run in was at a Penn State bar when they were in the Orange Bowl in 2006. We recognized each other and enjoyed an exciting game together. He asked me out for our first date to take place later that week. And here we are, almost twenty years later.” After marrying in Philadelphia, the couple settled together in Manhattan, where Nicki built her career in media advertising sales and Ryan thrived in hospitality, managing high-profile restaurants for Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton. Their life dreams included career aspirations and having a family. Ryan shares, “We moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn when we learned of our first pregnancy. The intention was to stay there for #2, but when we found out we were having twins, we needed more space! We had visited friends and attended Maplewoodstock, which first attracted us to the area.” This pivotal decision brought them to a welcoming cul-de-sac in South Orange, where their three daughters, Kaelyn (12), and twins Mya, and Paige (8.5) could flourish. Kaelyn, the eldest, is a dynamic sixth grader with a passion for athletics and the arts. Nicki reflects, “She juggles travel soccer, two basketball teams, and school, all while nurturing her creative side through drawing and performing arts.” Kaelyn’s schedule is a testament to her energy and enthusiasm. She recently joined the school’s ski club, adding another layer to her active lifestyle. Mya and Paige are in third grade and bring their own unique spark to the family dynamic. Nicki elaborates, “They are identical twins, but have their own personalities and interests. They’re very loyal to each other and very close, and it’s great that they have independent friends and activities. We agreed to separate them at school to help foster their singular identities.” The girls shine in dance and performing arts, participating in jazz, tap, and Kids on Broadway at CAPAS. They also enjoy recreational soccer and basketball, drawn as much

by the camaraderie as the competition. Their social nature is nurtured by the family’s close-knit neighborhood, where impromptu playdates and outdoor adventures are a daily occurrence. The Spears’ home is a hub of activity and joy, often echoing with laughter and music. Their legendary family dance parties bring friends and neighbors together for unforgettable nights of fun. Ryan explains, “Our girls love dance parties, so we purchased a fog machine and disco lights for added atmosphere” These moments of merriment reflect the family’s zest for life and their commitment to making memories together. Recognizing the importance of roots and stability, the family invested in their South Orange home. “We made a deliberate decision to stay in this area and renovated our home so it could grow with our family. We love entertaining our local friends and family.” While most of their family still live in Pennsylvania, their renovations create a welcoming space for gatherings and extended visits. Community involvement is central to the Spears’ family values. They are members of Wyoming Presbyterian Church, where they participate in mission work and encourage their children to give back. Ryan describes, “Our kids get involved by preparing meals for the homeless and picking out gifts for children in need during the holidays.” These experiences foster empathy and a sense of responsibility in their daughters, reinforcing the family’s belief in service and kindness. Travel is another important cornerstone of the Spears’ life. Ryan now owns a full-service travel agency, Spear Travel Group, offering expertise in planning family vacations, bucket list trips, cruises, honeymoons, and company offsite events both domestically and around the globe. “It’s important that our kids experience different parts of the world. Whether exploring the wilds of Alaska, relaxing on Caribbean beaches, or discovering new cultures in Europe, we cherish these opportunities for learning and family bonding,” said Ryan. Nicki adds, “While we appreciate amazing trips and all of the connections in the world of travel, it is always great to come back to the home and community that we love.”

HEALTH & WELLNESS
The conversation around GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic and Wegovy touches every corner of health today. For people navigating hormonal imbalances, PCOS, metabolic dysfunction, perimenopause, midlife shifts, or lower activity, these medications can quiet relentless “food noise” and create space for change. As a holistic health dietitian, I want to be clear: GLP-1s do not offer a shortcut. They serve as a tool that supports a fresh, structured restart. People who succeed usually work with a nutrition or holistic health expert before they start. Together, they build habits that stabilize blood sugar, heal food relationships, and support metabolic health. GLP-1s reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying, but fundamentals still drive results. Eat protein at every meal, stack fiber and colorful plants, and prioritize hydration and electrolytes. Choose slow carbs, healthy fats, and
minimally processed foods. Keep a regular meal rhythm to protect energy and digestion. Move your body. Resistance training preserves lean mass and keeps metabolism robust. Gentle cardio and daily walking support insulin sensitivity and mood. Sleep seven to nine hours, keep a consistent schedule, and dim screens at night. Manage stress with breath work, sunlight, and connection; stress spikes cravings and blood sugar. Track how you feel. Notice fullness cues, bowel patterns, and energy. Address nausea or constipation early with fluids, fiber, magnesium (as appropriate), and paced eating. Build meals you enjoy, not just meals you “should” eat. GLP 1s open the door; nutrition, movement, sleep, and self-care carry you through it. Consult a licensed clinician to tailor dosing and support.

REAL ESTATE THE ROLE OF A REAL ESTATE AGENT IN PRICE NEGOTIATION
When it comes time to negotiate the sale of your home, having an experienced real estate agent makes all the dif ference. A skilled agent understands how to position your property and negotiate confidently so you can achieve the best possible outcome. It starts with setting the right price. Using a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA), your agent reviews recent neigh borhood sales, current competition, and market trends to help you price your home strategically, not too high to scare off buyers. During negotiations, an agent keeps the process calm and professional. They understand buyer behavior, how to read offers, and when to push or hold firm. By handling communication directly, your agent shields you from the emotional back and forth and keeps your goals front and center. A strong agent also knows how to use contract terms, like inspection results, timelines, or buyer concessions, to protect your bottom line and keep the deal moving forward smoothly. If you’re thinking about selling your home, call me. I’ll guide you through pricing, positioning, and negotiation so you can sell with confidence.

“Wow, that’s a big bathtub,” my wife exclaimed. “Yeah, my client wanted a large soaking tub in her primary bathroom (see picture in the ad below), and this one is perfect for having a ‘Calgon moment,’” I said. “A what?” she responded. “You remember the old TV commercial. A stressed-out woman would cry, ‘Take me away, Calgon,’ and she would be transported to a luxurious bubble bath. I think Calgon provided the bubbles.” “Okay, Boomer, nothing like dating yourself,” she replied snidely. “Yes, I know I’m dating myself, but now, more than even back then, we all need a ‘Calgon moment.’” “And I get it, not all of us have the space for a giant soaking tub, but that’s just one way to get what is essentially a time-out from the world—an escape from the hectic, stressed-out, sensory-overloaded lifestyle we all live. And a ‘Calgon moment’ provides: one, stress relief, allowing you to unwind and lower your cortisol levels; two, mental clarity; stepping away from chaos helps you think more clearly and make better decisions; and three, though there are many more, emotional balance. Taking time to relax helps prevent burnout and emotional fatigue.” “I can’t even remember the last time I took a bath,” my wife sighed. “There are lots of ways to take time for yourself. People have meditation rooms, book nooks, or even a nice kitchen,” I added, smiling. “So, what are you cooking for dinner?” she asked slyly, knowing that cooking is a way for me to take my ‘Calgon moment.’

THE GRATITUDE EDIT: FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME AGAIN
laughter, tears, and probably a few (or many) cocktails.
Okay, decor lovers… let’s get real for a sec. November isn’t just about turkey, pie, and pretending you love your aunt’s green bean casserole. It’s about gratitude. And while gratitude journals and daily affirmations are fab, I’m here to remind you that one of the most powerful ways to practice gratitude… is by falling in love with your home again. Here’s the thing… we spend soooooooo much time noticing what’s wrong with our spaces (that corner we haven’t styled, that rug we swore we’d replace cuz the dog won’t stop peeing in that spot, that art we never got around to hanging) that we forget to appreciate what’s right. This month, I want you to slow down and actually see your home. The soft light that hits your couch just right in the morning. The cozy blanket that’s been with you through every Netflix binge. The dinner table that’s hosted
Gratitude shifts how we experience our spaces. When you love your home, it loves you back… it calms you, grounds you, and makes life feel a little softer around the edges. So before you run out to buy all the holiday decor (you know who you are, and I love you for it!), take a moment to say thank you. To your home. To yourself. To the life happening right inside those walls. Because gratitude looks good on a room… and decor lover, it looks damn good on you too! Happy Thanksgiving!

POWER OF SLEEP Deep sleep isn’t optional; it’s your body’s built-in repair system. It’s when your body detoxes, rebuilds, restores and reboots. Regardless of how hard you exercise, or how disciplined your diet, it all falls apart without the foundation that healthy sleep provides. Here’s a brief list of all-natural, healthy sleep remedies that will improve the quality and duration of your sleep. No pills, drugs, or expensive therapies – just simple steps you can take to get the deep and restorative sleep you need. 1. Chamomile tea contains apigenin, a compound that reduces anxiety and helps induce deep NREM sleep with no side effects or dependency. Drink 30–45 mins before bed. 2. Tart cherry juice is one of the few natural sources of melatonin, the important sleep hormone. One study found that drinking 2 cups per day led to nearly 90
minutes of additional sleep per night. Best to drink it 1–2 hours before bed for maximum effect. 3. Eat kiwi. This fruit is high in serotonin & antioxidants. One study found eating 2 kiwis an hour before bed can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. 4. Like kiwi, bananas are another sleep snack hiding in plain sight. They are rich in magnesium, crucial for melatonin production. They also contain tryptophan, the infamous Thanksgiving Day turkey-n-stuffing amino acid that helps the brain relax and fall asleep. Fix your sleep first. It’s the one upgrade that will positively impact everything else you do.

FINANCIAL FOCUS SMART FINANCIAL MOVES TO MAKE BEFORE YEAR-END As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to make some smart moves before the calendar flips to 2026. Think of it as a financial tune-up that could help with saving money and settingyou up for success in the months ahead. Here are some things to consider. • Don’t forget about required withdrawals. If you’re 73 or older, you’ll need to take your required minimum distribution from traditional retirement accounts to avoid a 25% penalty on any amount you should have withdrawn but didn’t. This rule also applies to some people who inherited retirement accounts, including certain Roth accounts. • Use your flexible spending account (FSA) money. Remember, these accounts follow a “use it or lose it” rule. Check with your HR department about your plan’s specific deadlines for spending the money and submitting receipts. Don’t delay necessary exams or treatments while this money is available. • Boost your retirement savings. Consider ramping up your pretax retirement contributions before year-end. Not only will this help your future self, but it might also reduce your current tax bill. If your workplace plan allows automatic increases from year to year. • Share the wealth through gifting. In 2025, the current tax rules let you give family or friends up to $19,000 per person without affecting your lifetime gift tax exemption. Married couples can combine their allowances to give up to $38,000 per person. Plus, you can pay someone’s tuition or medical bills directly without these payments counting against your gift limits. • Navigate new tax changes. The recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act made several tax provisions permanent, including lower individual tax rates and higher standard deductions. However, it also introduces new changes that might affect you. It’s worth sitting down with a financial advisor or tax professional to understand how these updates impact your situation. • Build up your emergency fund. It’s ideal to have enough cash saved to cover three to six months of living expenses in an easily accessible account. This safety net can prevent ever dipping in to retirement savings. • Review your estate planning documents. This is especially important if you’ve had major life changes like marriage, divorce or a new baby. Don’t forget to check the beneficiary designations on all your bank and brokerage accounts as well as life insurance policies. These often override what’s written in your will.

FROM THE DOCTOR SOME SPINE CURVES ARE HARMLESS, OTHERS AFFECT HOW YOU WALK, BREATHE AND AGE Kyphosis includes several patterns: postural, Scheuermann’s, congenital, cervical (military neck), and hyperkyphosis. They carry different risks. Slouching causes postural kyphosis, most common in teens, and exercises often correct it. Congenital kyphosis begins at birth. Scheuermann’s creates wedge-shaped vertebrae and a fixed curve. Hyperkyphosis accelerates after 40. Mild curves rarely cause harm. Severe curves, especially in older adults, can drive significant health problems: persistent back and shoulder pain, muscle stiffness and fatigue, shortness of breath from lung compression, and, in extreme cases, loss of bladder or bowel control. Clinicians screen with a forward-bending test that reveals abnormal rounding. Xrays then measure the Cobb angle. Providers label angles over 50 degrees as kyphotic. Most people do not need surgery. Conservative care often works best: physical therapy to strengthen the core and spinal extensors; posture retraining to improve daily movement; pain management; and, for adolescents with Scheuermann’s, supportive bracing. Bracing helps most while bones still grow and rarely helps adults with rigid deformities. Scoliosis and kyphosis differ. Scoliosis curves sideways into a C or S shape from a rear view. Kyphosis curves front to back and can create a hunched profile. They can occur together, but one does not cause the other. Early habits shape lifelong spinal health. Since postural and Scheuermann’s forms often emerge during adolescence, consistent screening, awareness of slouching, and regular strength work during growth years offer the best window to prevent progression and reduce future complications.

FROM THE DOCTOR PHYSICAL THERAPY TO HELP PREVENT AND MANAGE DIABETES November marks National Diabetes Month. We raise awareness, promote early detection, and champion habits that lift daily life. Diabetes affects over 38 million Americans; many others face risk from inactivity and poor diet. Physical therapy supports prevention and management with a tailored plan. Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood glucose, and boosts energy. Brisk walking, cycling, or swimming builds endurance. Strength work builds muscle, increases glucose uptake, and protects joints. Flexibility and balance drills improve circulation, reduce fall risk, and support foot health. Physical therapists assess your history, medications, glucose, and goals. We screen for neuropathy, cardiovascular risk, and musculoskeletal issues. Then we set SMART goals and build a program you can sustain at home, in the clinic, or outdoors. Typical plans include 150 minutes per week of moderate cardio, two to three days of resistance training, and daily mobility. We teach warmups, foot checks, and glucose monitoring around exercise. We adjust timing, intensity, and snacks to limit lows and highs. For weight management, we pair progressive strength, intervals, and walking that fit your schedule. For pain, arthritis, or balance issues, we lower impact, choose jointfriendly options, and add neuromuscular drills. We coordinate with your physician and dietitian to align medications, nutrition, and training. Start small, track your numbers, and build consistency. If you live with diabetes or face high risk, ask a physical therapist for a plan that keeps you safe, motivated, and moving.

FROM THE DOCTOR
RAISING BRAVE KIDS: BUILDING COURAGE ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME
Big acts of courage—giving a speech, trying out for a team, sleeping away from home—don’t just appear out of nowhere. Bravery is built in small, everyday steps, and as parents, we have endless opportunities to help our kids practice. Bravery can look like: • Letting your child order their own food at a restaurant. • Encouraging them to say hello to a new neighbor or classmate. • Trying a new game, food, or activity together. • Asking a question in class, at the library, or even at the grocery store. • Calling a friend or business (instead of having a parent do it). These little moments matter because bravery grows like a muscle—the more kids use it, the stronger it gets. When children see themselves as capable of facing challenges, their confidence expands. Even the tiniest step, like saying
“thank you” to the cashier, lays the groundwork for bigger acts of courage down the road. When we give our children space to try, and celebrate their effort, we send a powerful message: I believe in you, and you can do hard things. Struggling to build your child’s confidence? Cuffing Season When You’re Already Cuffed Cuffing season is here, and for those of us already in relationships, it can feel like we’ve got this one in the bag. Built-in cuddle buddy? Check. But if your summer lacked sizzle, you might notice the chill creeping into more than just the air. Cuffing season can feel like a rude reminder that something is missing to some. But it can also serve as a loving nudge to re-ignite connection with your partner. Here’s how to recuff and turn up the heat. 1. Talk about it. You can’t read each other’s minds, even after years together. Ask how your partner feels about your connection and share your own thoughts. Vulnerability is a turn-on and can deepen intimacy. 2. Schedule it. Planning doesn’t kill the mood; it builds anticipation. When you know a romantic night is coming, the flirtation can start long before it begins. 3. Get creative. Try new ways to connect. Share fantasies, experiment, and keep a sense of humor. And remember not to yuck your partner’s yum. This season, don’t let singles have all the cuffing fun. Reclaim your cuffed status, reconnect with your partner, and stay warm together long after the cold weather fades. SOMA SNAPSHOTS
My name is Skylar Mass. I am 10 years old and in 5th grade at Golda Och Academy. I love figure-skating, playing ice hockey, and playing the flute in my school band. I have a younger brother and a younger sister. My family moved to South Orange in 2020. Even though we moved during the pandemic, it was easy to meet neighbors and friends because of how friendly everyone is. I love so many things about living in SOMA but some of my favorite things are the location, the food, the people, and Halloween. SOMA has a lot of public transportation and is near many highways. I can easily get to NYC and the Jersey shore. There are so many things to eat and do right here. I love the peach pie at Able Baker and the salmon roll at Ariyoshi. The people who live and work in SOMA are so nice. I got to meet so many of them through Girl Scouts. My Girl Scout Troop learned first aid at the South Orange Rescue Squad, held a book club meeting at the South Orange Public Library, and sold cookies in downtown Maplewood. We also took a dance class at Motion Arts and a karate class at Maplewood Karate/Master Toledo. My troop does a lot of community service in and around SOMA. My favorite activity is donating teddy bears to people in need. In SOMA, people go ‘all out’ during Halloween. There is a ton of candy, people in costumes, and awesome decorations. Some people even set up mazes on their lawns. I have so much fun trick or treating with my friends! We go through the mazes over and over again. SOMA is a great place to live and I am lucky to be here!

COLUMBIA’S LIFE BEYOND THE SCHOOL COLUMBIA’S LIFE BEYOND THE SCHOOL: AUTUMN SEASON GROUP CHATS
At Columbia High School, every club, sports team, and friend group maintains a group chat. Students make plans, conduct business, and help each other with homework at 11 p.m. In September and October, clubs welcome new arrivals and fall sports begin, making autumn the most exciting and chaotic season of the school year. Apps such as Messages, GroupMe, and Snapchat support the weight of group chats. Club conversations start with simple intentions; a few moments later, students share screenshots, send random messages, and ask how they can get involved. Silence never occurs. If you step away, you return to a flood of miscellaneous messages. Yet, the chaos defines the autumn club and sports spirit:
communal, fresh, and thrilling. Group chats keep Columbia buzzing after the end of the day and throughout the night. Students from all grades share comments and express their school spirit. These chats strengthen Columbia’s system of nerves. A sports captain sends reminders before a big game, and club members plan their next activity. The messages always reach their intended recipients. Every Columbia student understands their meaning. Columbia’s GroupMe, Snapchat, and Messages group chats fuel academic life. They serve as our version of Millennials’ “AIM” and Gen X/Baby Boomers’ folded notes. We unite in communicative chaos and school spirit.
Hatcher Niles is a junior at Columbia High School and a proud member of the class of 2027. This school year, he’s excited about the new FinTech club he is a co-founder of, is finding more ways to volunteer in our community, and is gearing up for college application season.
MEET THE MERCHANT
Get to know downtown Maplewood Village Alliance Merchants in this Q+A feature - this month, Inside Home, a beautifully curated design destination in the heart of Maplewood Village. What is your name and the name of your business? My name is Robert White and I own Inside Home, located in Maplewood Village. What is your USP? What sets your business apart from others? Inside Home is more than a home décor store, it is a creative space where design meets personal expression. We are the only store in the area dedicated exclusively to home decorating, and we take pride in offering thoughtful, hands-on guidance for customers who want to enhance their living spaces. Whether it is a full home makeover, or a few key updates, we tailor each project to reflect the homeowner’s individual style and budget. What really makes us unique is that I bring my background as a fine artist into the mix. I create original abstract artwork in a working studio right inside the shop, and that energy carries over into the design process. Every item in the store, from the lighting and rugs to the furniture, art, and accessories, is carefully chosen to inspire and reflect a range of aesthetics. What inspired you to get into this business? I have worked as an interior designer for over 40 years,
and design has always been both my profession and my passion. When I moved to Maplewood, I felt the timing was right to create the kind of boutique I personally enjoy shopping in, one where people can browse, feel inspired, and find truly unique pieces they would not see anywhere else. Why Maplewood Village? I moved to Maplewood about seven years ago and was instantly charmed by the
Village. It really is a “small wonder.” There is a warmth and vibrancy here that is hard to find elsewhere. When I decided to open Inside Home, there was no question in my mind that Maplewood Village was the place to do it. I wanted to be part of the creative and entrepreneurial fabric that makes this neighborhood so special. It is a community that values individuality, artistry, and meaningful connection, and that aligns perfectly with the spirit of Inside Home. Where are you located? Inside Home is located at 101 Baker Street, in Maplewood Village. @insidehomemaplewood | insidehomenj.com
