SOMA Living November 2025
FROM THE DOCTOR PHYSICAL THERAPY TO HELP PREVENT AND MANAGE DIABETES November marks National Diabetes Month. We raise awareness, promote early detection, and champion habits that lift daily life. Diabetes affects over 38 million Americans; many others face risk from inactivity and poor diet. Physical therapy supports prevention and management with a tailored plan. Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood glucose, and boosts energy. Brisk walking, cycling, or swimming builds endurance. Strength work builds muscle, increases glucose uptake, and protects joints. Flexibility and balance drills improve circulation, reduce fall risk, and support foot health. Physical therapists assess your history, medications, glucose, and goals. We screen for neuropathy, cardiovascular risk, and musculoskeletal issues. Then we set SMART goals and build a program you can sustain at home, in the clinic, or outdoors. Typical plans include 150 minutes per week of moderate cardio, two to three days of resistance training, and daily mobility. We teach warmups, foot checks, and glucose monitoring around exercise. We adjust timing, intensity, and snacks to limit lows and highs. For weight management, we pair progressive strength, intervals, and walking that fit your schedule. For pain, arthritis, or balance issues, we lower impact, choose jointfriendly options, and add neuromuscular drills. We coordinate with your physician and dietitian to align medications, nutrition, and training. Start small, track your numbers, and build consistency. If you live with diabetes or face high risk, ask a physical therapist for a plan that keeps you safe, motivated, and moving.
