SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

Your spine is an intricate and complicated piece of the body. When injuries happen, it can greatly affect ones lift and activity level. There are multiple treatment options for spinal injury. These include surgery, injections, braces, physical therapy, and spinal decompression. We will focus on spinal decompression which is offered at certain PT or chiropractic centers. It is a way to non-invasively treat cervical and lumbar stenosis as well as disc bulges. Spinal decompression can treat both cervical and lumbar injuries and, again, is noninvasive. The therapy works to stretch the spine, using a spinal decompression table or other device, to create negative pressure and space within the disc to allow disc fluid to move back into place. This creates an environment in which the disc can receive more nutrients and therefore heal itself more quickly and effectively. Generally, decompression treatments last 20 minutes from start to finish. Tension from the device is weight based and patient specific. In most cases, it takes about 20-28 sessions over a 5-7 week period for maximum results. For most spinal injuries, a personalized combination of exercises, physical therapy modalities, and the spinal decompression will create the best results in the shortest amount of time.
