SOMA Living May 2023
FRANK McGEHEE Former Maplewood Mayor and Democratic leader Frank McGehee announced his run for Assembly in New Jersey’s new 28th Legislative District (now representing South Orange, Maplewood, the South and West Wards of Newark, Irvington and Hillside). SOMA was redistricted from the 27th to the 28th Legislative District. Assembly person Mila Jasey announced she will not seek re-election. There are three Democratic candidates running for two seats. “This election is a new opportunity for residents to think critically about who will best represent them in Trenton. I’m running because voters need change and experienced leadership,” said McGehee. He added, “The Covid pandemic changed everything about how we live, learn, work and play. Let’s accelerate change so our municipalities can thrive - not stick with politics as usual.” New Jersey is the only state in the United States where candidates running for state office are endorsed by the county. Candidates backed by the county generate higher funding and usually win their elections because voters don’t take the time to get to know their candidates. Instead, voters simply “vote the county line.” The county is banking on this so that their candidates feel obligated to put the county’s interests first. McGehee explained, “Our residents deserve forward thinking leaders who are about the people first, not political machines at the county or municipal level,” He concluded, “Vote Line B for Frank McGehee for Assembly on Tuesday, June 6.”
