TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery often becomes the best choice for individuals struggling with debilitating knee pain due to various forms of arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and posttraumatic arthritis. This condition severely limits daily activities, including walking, climbing stairs, and moving from sitting to standing. TKR surfaces as an option when conservative treatments— ranging from anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone injections to physical therapy and less invasive surgeries—do not relieve symptoms. The surgical procedure involves several critical steps: First, the surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and a small portion of the underlying bone from the ends of the femur and tibia. Then, metal implants replace the joint’s surface, which may be either cemented or press-fit into the bone. In some cases, the patella gets a resurfacing with a plastic button, although this step depends on the specific situation. Finally, a medical-grade plastic spacer goes between the metal components to ensure a smooth gliding surface. Post-surgery rehabilitation plays a crucial role in recovery, starting with pain management and early mobilization to prevent complications like scar tissue formation. Physical therapy focuses on restoring range of motion and strengthening the muscles around the knee to support stability and mobility. Therapists also work on managing swelling, a common postoperative challenge that can slow recovery. The overarching goal of rehabilitation is to help patients return to their highest level of functionality and quality of life safely and effectively. Doctors recommend TKR when the quality of life suffers significantly, and other treatments have not worked.
