MEET THE MPANZA-WITJES FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
The Mpanza-Witjes family’s story is a vivid mosaic of experiences that bridges continents and cultures. Kwanele, from South Africa, and Marieke, from the Netherlands, met in a unique encounter that blended their diverse backgrounds. Their life together, enriched by the birth of their children Sam (9), Ella (7), Lotte (5), and Fin (3), is a journey of mutual discovery and deepening connections. Their romance sparked at a fundraising event in 2012 in Soweto. Marieke was doing work in South Africa for consulting firm Kearney and Kwanele lived in Joburg. Kwanele recalls, “Serendipity? The Universe? Marieke was about to return to Amsterdam, when her colleagues asked her to stay for the weekend and volunteer at a local charity event, where I happened to be a board member, but almost couldn’t attend that year.” The rest quickly became history when Kearney asked Marieke to relocate to Johannesburg a few months later. By 2015, now parents to Sam, they embarked on a new chapter, spurred by another job opportunity for Marieke that led them to NYC. Before settling in, they journeyed across Southern Africa, a memorable adventure from Namibia on the Atlantic West coast through several African countries touching tropical Mozambique on the East coast. Arriving at JFK with a few suitcases, two bikes, and a baby. They quickly found their footing, starting in an AirBnB in BedStuy before moving to Park Slope, where Kwanele connected with other stay-at home dads, and started a career in real estate.

The family grew with the birth of their daughter Ella (2017), born in a tub in their BKNY sized apartment, to the surprise of their neighbors. The arrival of Lotte (2018) prompted a search for more space, leading them through Ditmas Park, and eventually to South Orange after exploring a few suburbs and competitive housing markets. SoMa charmed them with its diversity and warm community, making it easy to feel at home. The family, known for their all weather walks and bike rides across town, became a familiar sight. In 2019, Kwanele co-founded Theo & Lotte, a groundbreaking creative and branding agency focused on design for the real estate and hospitality sectors. In 2020 they were blessed with the birth of Fin, the only born New Jersite in their family. The COVID-19 pandemic got them first homeschooling and later traveling, as they like to find opportunities when they face headwinds. They spent nearly a year traveling between South Africa and the Netherlands, integrating their children into local schools. Through their travels, they realized South Orange had become home. Kwanele humorously shares, “Upon returning, Lotte wondered, ‘Where are we going next?’ and we assured her, ‘This IS home.’” Their story reflects a journey of love, adventure, and the discovery of a place to call home, embodying the spirit of a global family rooted in this community. Marieke is a consultant with EgonZehnder in NYC, while Kwanele runs his agency Theo & Lotte between South Orange and downtown Newark, and their kids are embedded in local schools, sports, and activities.

This month’s feature is Patricia Canning. Patricia Canning is a businesswoman, community activist, and tri-athlete. She recently launched The PMC Solutions Group which provides project management and environmental sustainability services to organizations and communities seeking to engage in the clean energy transition.
with a dry, itchy scalp. With Potency no. 710 Wild Jane Conditioner, we were able to lower inflammation, hydrate and moisturize her scalp. Additionally, I recommended High Tea Good Night Irene, which contains 15mg of CBD in every tea bag, as a way for Patricia to unwind and relax after a long day. It will also help with a good night’s sleep. Let Patricia’s story be a reminder that there is always a solution to any beauty struggle, and Dream Team Makeover is here to help you discover your best self. ~ Jill Cohen @TheCannaBossLady.
Julie Perlow, Retail Therapy - The styling experience with Patricia was truly fun and unique. Patricia was willing to go shopping at one of my favorite “discounted designer” boutiques in the area. This store has a huge selection and allowed us to find pieces that popped with color, texture and sheen.
Patricia and her family have resided in SOMA for nearly 20 years. She expresses, “In SOMA, we found a community where I can make a difference.” This drove her involvement with the Community Coalition on Race, the Achieve Foundation, and the South Orange Environmental Commission. Patricia spearheaded initiatives like the SoNotPlastic campaign and the MLK Luminary Project. In her downtime, Patricia competes in half-ironman triathlons. This commitment led her to form TeamTRIiumph Inc, a women’s empowerment group that guided over 100 women to complete their first triathlon. Her two daughters and husband also actively participate in health and fitness activities.
The photos of Patricia were sophisticated and beautiful and part of the equation was her chic wardrobe choices!
Norah Salzar, Makeup artist - I loved working with Patricia! For her glam, I chose some metallic and black in her eyes, kohl black eyeliner to make her eyes pop and radiant skin with a nice berry lip color. On set, I added some clip in extensions to give her salon blowout the additional body she wanted. Patricia was a joy to work with and this shoot was super fun for all of us.

Yoni Kreger, YK Salon - Patricia came in all smiles and ready for her glam squad to take over! With beautiful dark brown hair that had become overly oxidized, the YK team sought to rebalance the tone by bringing it closer to her natural color. Yoni cooled down the color slightly by creating a low lighting effect, which allows a softer growout while creating depth. With the color perfected, Terrell began the styling process. Though we love a curly girl, we decided to give Patricia a different look for her photoshoot. Using proper products every step of the way to retain the health of the hair, Terrell carefully blow-dried and flat ironed the hair, sealing the cuticle shut to eliminate any frizz. To finish it off, Terrell lightly applied a serum for shine and a spritz of hairspray so Patricia can be photoshoot ready for days to come!
Lee Seidenberg Photography - Patricia initially felt nervous about being in front of the camera, but her fear quickly dissipated. We chose a brown paper backdrop to complement the brown leather jacket and used two lights – one main and one kicker. Looking to inject some energy into the poses, we got Patricia to dance and captured her in motion. Transitioning to the blue top and painted blue jeans, we experimented with a couple of backdrops: a reflective insulation board sourced from Home Depot and a black V-flat, which has a nice chalky texture. Lastly, for the tan dress, we positioned Patricia in front of a window flooded with strong morning light to backlight her.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
INSTRUCTIONS
IRISH WHISKEY BRAISED SHORT RIBS Prep Time: 30 mins • Cook Time: 3 hours Servings: 4 I am straight up obsessed with this recipe for Irish whiskey braised short ribs…especially when celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this month. These short ribs are fork tender; packed with a rich, deep meaty flavor; and make a rustically elegant meal when paired with a scoop of mashed potatoes.
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Generously season the short ribs with kosher salt and pepper. Dredge the short ribs in flour. 2. Heat the oil and butter over med/high in a dutch oven or heavy bottomed pot. Add the floured short ribs and brown on all sides, about 10 mins. Remove to a plate. 3. Add the carrots, celery and shallot wedges to the pot. Season with kosher salt and pepper. Saute until the vegetables are softened and beginning to caramelize, about 10 mins. 4. Add the garlic and saute 2 mins longer. Stir in the tomato paste, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce and cook for 2 mins. 5. Deglaze with 1/2 cup Irish whiskey. Bring to a boil and reduce by half. Stir in 3 cups beef stock and bring to a boil. Season with kosher salt and pepper. 6. Reduce to a simmer and nestle the short ribs and ay accumulated juices into the pot with the thyme sprigs. Cover and
braise in the oven for 2 – 2 1/2 hours or until fork tender, turning occasionally. 7. Remove the dutch oven from the oven and carefully remove the short ribs to a plate and cover tightly. 8. Strain the vegetables from the braising liquid. Pour the braising liquid into a fat separator or simply strain off as much fat as you can with a ladle or spoon. Pour the strained liquid into a small saucepan, add the additional whiskey, and stock. 9. Season the sauce with salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Continue to boil until you reach your desired consistency for the sauce. Serve the short ribs with the sauce spooned over the top.
INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp tomato paste 2 Tbsp light brown sugar 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup Irish whiskey (+2 Tbsp for sauce) 3 cups beef stock (+ 1/4 cup for sauce) 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme kosher salt and pepper
2 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 lbs boneless beef short ribs 1/4 cup flour 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced 3 celery stalks diced 2 large shallots, peeled and cut into wedges 4 cloves garlic, minced

FINANCIAL FOCUS On International Women’s Day, March 8, we celebrate women’s global achievements but also recognize the challenges they face in securing a comfortable retirement. Several factors contribute to this issue: Pay Gap: Women typically earn about 82 cents for every dollar that men earn, affecting their ability to contribute to retirement savings and resulting in smaller Social Security benefits. Longevity: Women live longer, with an average life expectancy of about 20 years at age 65, which increases their retirement expenses. Caregiving: Caregiving responsibilities often lead to reduced earnings and retirement contributions for women, with employment-related costs reaching nearly $300,000 over a lifetime. To bridge the retirement gap, women can take proactive steps: Maximize Retirement Contributions: It’s crucial to contribute as much as possible to 401(k)s or similar plans, taking advantage of tax-deferred growth and employer matches. Optimize Social Security Benefits: Delaying Social Security until full retirement age (around 66½) can significantly increase monthly benefits. Coordination between spouses can also maximize benefits. Build an Emergency Fund: Aiming for a fund that covers six months of living expenses can protect retirement savings from unexpected costs. Although women face a more challenging route to retirement security, adopting strategic financial planning can help ease this journey and ensure a more secure retirement.

HOME DESIGN “Mr. Doug! What do you want to do?” Alex, my contractor and longtime collaborator, asked with a hint of confusion. “I want to round off this peninsula,” I confidently replied. “With sticks!?” he exclaimed, a mixture of surprise and skepticism in his voice. I laughed, “Yes.” This was no ordinary task; it was for the Chloe Project, a comprehensive house renovation we aimed to sell on the open market. “I think people will love it! Or at least I hope they will,” I said, trying to ease his concern. We embarked on transforming plywood through meticulous cutting, scoring, wetting, and bending. Once dry, it was precisely affixed at the peninsula’s end, with sticks measured and placed with precision. The construction was not just a structure but a marvel of design. However, disaster struck due to my oversight as the designer. The stain chosen looked atrocious on the wood, a mistake I deeply regretted.
Feeling despondent, I dreaded the thought of starting over. “We’ll fix it,” my wife assured me, her confidence unwavering. Our solution came from an unexpected visit to Ricciardi Brothers Paint, where Bella Campanelli, a stain master from another store, was miraculously working that day. With her expertise, Bella mixed several stains to perfectly match the cabinetry, teaching me the application process. The peninsula turned out stunning, a testament to Bella’s skill and a serendipitous encounter that felt like the Universe’s guiding hand. This project, a blend of innovative design and collaborative spirit, showcased the beauty of creative problem-solving and the value of expert advice.

INTERIOR DESIGN Let’s discuss kitchens. Everyone is always in there, right? It’s the heart of every home. Over the years, kitchens have truly become the showstoppers of many homes. However, most houses in this area were built a long time ago, and the needs and functions of kitchens were very different then. You may be thinking, “A total kitchen renovation? That costs big bucks.” Don’t worry. There are many ways to upgrade a kitchen without spending a fortune. With a few small tweaks, you won’t believe how new and renovated a kitchen can look. Here are my top kitchen upgrade hacks and some pictures to show you the huge difference these smaller changes can make.

HEY ALEXA, STOP EAVESDROPPING AND SIMPLIFY MY HOME! LIGHTING AND AUDIO
Embarking on a smart home journey often starts with familiar DIY systems like Google Home and Alexa. These platforms are accessible, budget-friendly, and user-friendly, perfect for basic tasks such as playing music, dimming lights, or adjusting the thermostat with a simple voice command or a smartphone tap. However, as the number of smart devices in a home increases, the simplicity that initially attracted users to these DIY systems can begin to fade. The ease of use can get lost amidst a sea of apps and controls, complicating what was supposed to be a streamlined smart home experience. While Google and Alexa can listen to commands, they might not keep things simple as a smart home ecosystem expands. This complexity highlights the advantages of intelligent home systems. These systems excel at integrating various smart devices into a unified ecosystem, offering a single, sleek interface for managing everything from lighting and
climate to security and entertainment. This centralization epitomizes the concept of ‘less is more,’ simplifying the smart home experience. For those just starting their smart home journey, a DIY system like Google Home or Alexa might serve as the ideal starting point. However, for individuals aspiring to a seamlessly integrated and effortlessly managed smart home, transitioning to an intelligent system might be the smart choice. It represents an upgrade from juggling multiple apps to conducting a well-orchestrated smart home symphony, ensuring that home technology enhances rather than complicates life.

CORRECT POSTURE
Sitting correctly can enhance overall health. Correct posture while sitting can: reduce headaches from tense neck and shoulder muscles, lower back pain, boost energy levels, decrease the risk of chronic pain and repetitive strain injuries, improve posture while sitting and standing, expand lung capacity, aid digestion and circulation, maintain a healthy head position, and increase upper back and core muscle strength, boosting self-confidence and mood. For desk workers aiming to counteract sitting’s negative impacts: stand and move every hour, walk during phone calls or meetings, have walking lunches, prioritize daily exercise, and stretch regularly to combat muscle stiffness. These adjustments can promote better health. For more tips, visit SouthOrangeChiropractic.com for videos on staying fit while seated.

FROM THE DOCTOR
TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery often becomes the best choice for individuals struggling with debilitating knee pain due to various forms of arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and posttraumatic arthritis. This condition severely limits daily activities, including walking, climbing stairs, and moving from sitting to standing. TKR surfaces as an option when conservative treatments— ranging from anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone injections to physical therapy and less invasive surgeries—do not relieve symptoms. The surgical procedure involves several critical steps: First, the surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and a small portion of the underlying bone from the ends of the femur and tibia. Then, metal implants replace the joint’s surface, which may be either cemented or press-fit into the bone. In some cases, the patella gets a resurfacing with a plastic button, although this step depends on the specific situation. Finally, a medical-grade plastic spacer goes between the metal components to ensure a smooth gliding surface. Post-surgery rehabilitation plays a crucial role in recovery, starting with pain management and early mobilization to prevent complications like scar tissue formation. Physical therapy focuses on restoring range of motion and strengthening the muscles around the knee to support stability and mobility. Therapists also work on managing swelling, a common postoperative challenge that can slow recovery. The overarching goal of rehabilitation is to help patients return to their highest level of functionality and quality of life safely and effectively. Doctors recommend TKR when the quality of life suffers significantly, and other treatments have not worked.

COALITION ON RACE March is National Women’s History Month, and this year we celebrate “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” In line with this theme, the Community Coalition on Race dedicated their second Black History Month program to spotlighting the racial disparities and inequities Black women face in healthcare access. The event featured a screening of “Birthing Justice,” a powerful documentary uncovering the stark racial differences in mortality, complications, and treatment between Black and white mothers. This documentary highlights that Black mothers are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, with the majority of these deaths being preventable. After the film, a panel of local women of color shared their personal stories, shedding light on the challenges they face and proposing solutions to address the healthcare inequities among Black women. Addressing these health disparities requires a comprehensive, intersectional approach that tackles social determinants of health, systemic inequities, implicit bias, and the impact of racism. Key to this effort are initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access, offering culturally competent services, expanding education, and addressing the root causes of these disparities. Community members can contribute by supporting educational programs that raise awareness, backing initiatives that broaden access to affordable healthcare, and advocating for policies that foster health equity. Together, we can make a difference in achieving health equity for Black women.
Nancy Gagnier, Executive Director of the South Orange/ Maplewood Community Coalition on Race, develops pro-integrative strategies to support racial equity and inclusion.

All proceeds and funds raised for the event go to support Millburn Co-op.
Millburn Co-op was founded in 1974 in a one-room schoolhouse on the edge of Taylor Park in Millburn. It has since grown from its signature 3s-4s mixed-aged class to include a 2.5s class and a kindergarten bridge program for 5 year olds. (The 3s-4s class is still located in Taylor Park, while the 2.5s and 5s classes are at St. George’s Church in Maplewood.) At “the Co-op,” children learn through play. We follow the children’s lead as they explore their environment and become problem solvers and lifelong learners. Our approach allows each child to grow physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially at their own pace. Our staff incorporates concepts of Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Adler, and Piaget, with a strong emphasis on socialization and independence. Instilling a love of the environment is also integral to our curriculum. We search for the first robin, dig for earthworms, catch snowflakes on our tongues, care for classroom pets, study animals’ habitats, and celebrate the change of seasons.
