SOMA Living April 2025
HOME DESIGN My real estate partner, Kim, and I were at an open house, viewing a newly renovated home. We wandered into the primary bathroom, a huge space with a stand-alone soaker tub and a narrow, deep, cavernous shower. I opened the large glass shower door and looked at the shower head and hand sprayer at the other end of the space. “Well, they didn’t get the lighting right, but at least they did this correctly,” I said. “What do you mean?” Kim asked. “Notice anything missing under the shower head?” I asked. “The shower caddy with 14 plastic bottles of beauty products?” she answered wryly. I laughed, “That would be my house. No, the water controller is not there. Imagine if it was; you’d step into the shower, then reach all the way to the controller underneath the shower head, turn on the water, and…bam! You’re hit with a blast of icy cold water. Not exactly the way you want to start your morning.” “But it’s not there,” she said. “Right, it’s in the right place. They put it by the shower door so that when you open the door, you can turn on the water at a safe distance and adjust the temperature and water flow without risking a faceful of cold spray,” I answered. “Well, that’s smart,” she commented. “You know, it’s the little things that
most people don’t think about when designing a space that make the biggest difference,” I concluded. “Well, that’s why they need to hire you,” she said offhandedly, walking out of the room.
