MEET THE DONOVAN FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
Meet Heather and Elizabeth Donovan, a dynamic couple whose journey reflects love, adventure, and resilience. Their story begins in 2010 when they met in New York City. Heather explains, “For as big as NYC is, the lesbian community feels relatively small. Everyone knows each other within one or two degrees of separation.” Their early years as a couple were filled with excitement and exploration. Living in different areas of New York City, they enjoyed the vibrant culture and nightlife. “We feel so fortunate that we spent our time in New York exactly how we wanted to,” Elizabeth recalls. Heather adds, “Living across town from one another, we spent our weekends walking from one end of the city to the other, stopping for drinks, shopping, and enjoying the sights between our two places. On one walk, I got a tattoo. On another walk, we adopt a cat named ‘Mr. Sunday.’ He’s still with us today.” Heather and Elizabeth married in 2015, the same year that same-sex marriage became federally legal in the United States. Their wedding celebrated their love and commitment, marking a new chapter in their lives. Following this, they embarked on a year-long adventure, traveling to 14 countries across Europe and Southeast Asia. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allowed them to immerse themselves in different cultures and create lasting memories. Returning to the United States, Heather and Elizabeth decided to start a family, settling for a short time in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 2018, they welcomed their son, Oliver, a sweet boy whose contentment brings calm to those around him. Oliver received a diagnosis of autism at the age of two and a half, and although the diagnosis brings challenges, it strengthens their bond as a family. “Autism is a part of Oliver, but it doesn’t define him,” Elizabeth explains. Oliver makes remarkable progress, attending Somerset Hills Learning Institute, a school for children with autism. The school’s emphasis on parent training enables them to actively engage in Oliver’s education and development.

A few years later, the Donovans moved to Maplewood and welcomed a spirited daughter named Sophie. At four and a half years old, Sophie displays a “spitfire” personality with a precocious intellect. The relationship between Oliver and Sophie is heartwarming, as Sophie plays a significant role in helping Oliver blossom and open up verbally. The siblings share a special bond filled with love and care. The Donovan family finds a supportive community in their town, connecting with other families through local support groups and Oliver’s school. They benefit from Blue Path, an organization providing service dogs for children with autism. Their service dog, Moose, joined the family in September and ensures Oliver’s safety, providing comfort and companionship. Elizabeth works from home for a B2B intelligence platform for the insurance industry, while Heather stays at home, dedicating her time to managing the household and supporting Oliver’s education. Their partnership is a testament to their deep devotion to each other and their children. “We joke that she’s literally my life assistant for everything,” Elizabeth says of Heather. Living in Maplewood brings immense joy to the Donovan family. They appreciate the town’s understanding, acceptance, and equality. “It probably sounds ridiculous, but living here we forget all the time that we’re gay,” Heather mentions, highlighting the community’s inclusive nature. They enjoy local amenities, such as a favorite coffee shop Sophie calls “Ghost Light Bakery” because of its Halloween decor, the Reservoir, as well as Turtle Back Zoo. The proximity to New York City allows for cultural enrichment through museums and shows. Heather adds, “It’s really wonderful how many theater productions and other events have special performances designed for children with autism.” The Donovans’ journey faces ups and downs, but resilience and love carry them through. Embracing their family dynamic, they focus on creating a nurturing environment for their children. They express gratitude for the many opportunities and privileges living in Maplewood grants them.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
training becomes a powerful tool for building mental resilience. The act of pushing your physical limits translates to a sense of empowerment, helping you navigate the complexities of this phase with greater confidence. And let’s not forget bone health. As estrogen levels plummet, so does your protection against osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises, especially strength training, are crucial for maintaining bone density, safeguarding against fractures and frailty. Now, simply lifting weights isn’t enough. We’re talking about progressive overload – a strategic approach to building strength over time. Your body adapts; it’s a survival mechanism. This is why using only 5 lbs weights often gets you nowhere when it comes to building muscle. To keep progressing, you must consistently challenge it. That means gradually increasing the weight, reps, sets, or difficulty of your exercises. In a culture often fixated on cardio and restrictive diets, strength training deserves its rightful place in the perimenopausal toolkit. It’s an investment in long-term health, empowering women to embrace this life stage with strength, vitality, and confidence.
Photo by Erica Reade
We’ve been unpacking the realities of perimenopause, and it’s time to drill down on the one strategy that truly shifts the game: strength training. Forget the fleeting promises of fad diets and miracle creams. This is about building a foundation of resilience, both physical and mental, as your body navigates hormonal upheaval. Perimenopause isn’t just about hot flashes; it’s a physiological shift that erodes muscle mass and increases fat storage. This decline isn’t just cosmetic; it impacts your functionality, your energy levels, and your overall quality of life. Strength training steps in as the counterpunch, stimulating muscle protein synthesis and reigniting your metabolism. But it’s more than just physical. The mental and emotional toll of perimenopause is real. Mood swings, anxiety, sleepless nights – these are common battles. Strength

BEAUTY
As the seasons change and humidity levels rise, many people battle frizz and unruly hair. Now is the perfect time to consider a keratin treatment, a game-changer for achieving smooth, manageable locks. Keratin treatments infuse your hair with keratin protein, which strengthens and protects each strand. The result is a sleek, shiny finish that lasts for weeks. Say goodbye to the daily struggle of styling your hair in humid conditions, and say hello to effortlessly beautiful hair. If you have gray hair, the texture often becomes coarser and more challenging to manage. Keratin treatments address this change, softening the hair while maintaining its color and vibrancy. These treatments suit all hair types—curly, wavy, or straight. They tame frizz and reduce drying time, making your morning routine quicker and more enjoyable. EMBRACE HUMIDITY: THE BENEFITS OF KERATIN TREATMENTS
Moreover, keratin treatments enhance the overall health of your hair. They seal in moisture and protect against environmental stressors, leaving your locks vibrant and revitalized. Embrace the season with confidence by considering a keratin treatment. RECIPE OF THE MONTH
SHAKSHUKA WITH LAMB MEATBALLS Prep Time: 40 mins •Cook Time: 35 mins Servings: 6 If you’re looking for a hearty, savory brunch dish that wows, say hello to shakshuka with lamb meatballs. Shakshuka is a wildly popular dish in the Middle East that originated in North Africa where eggs are poached in a thick tomato, pepper, and onion sauce that is seasoned with spices and today we’re upping the ante with lamb meatballs.
INSTRUCTIONS
LAMB MEATBALLS 1. Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a large nonstick skillet until hot. Stir in the shallot and galic and saute until golden, about 3 mins. Cool slightly. Combine the ground lamb with the shallot/ garlic mixture and the remaining ingredients. 2. Mix well to combine. I use my hands to make sure it’s well mixed. 3. Scoop 2 Tbsp portions (I use a small ice cream scooper) and roll into balls. Heat the remaining oil in the nonstick skillet over med/ high heat and add the meatballs in a single layer. (You should have about 25 meatballs.) 4. Saute, turning frequently, until the meatballs are browned and cooked through, about 8 mins. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate and reserve. SHAKSHUKA 1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet (one that has a tight fitting lid). Add the diced red pepper and the onion and saute until golden and softened, about 8 mins. Stir in the garlic and continue to cook, 2-3 more mins. 2. Stir in the spices and toast for 1-2 mins. Add the crushed tomatoes and chicken stock season generously with kosher salt and pepper. Stir in the sugar and herbs. 3. Add the meatballs to the pan and cook over medium heat for about 5 mins. 4. Make six depressions and crack an egg into each.
5. Cover and cook until the eggs are cooked, about 8 mins. Sprinkle with crumbled feta and herbs and serve with toasted pita wedges. RECIPE NOTES • Use your hands to mix the meatballs to be sure they are well mixed. • A small ice cream scooper is ideal for the meatballs so they are all the same size and cook evenly. • Watch heat as you cook meatballs, lower if they brown too quickly. • Drain excess oil from meatballs before adding to shakshuka. • When adding eggs to tomato sauce, use a spoon to make a depression before adding the eggs. • Crack the eggs into a small cup and add to dish. This ensure all of yolks are intact. • Keep an eye on eggs as they cook, look for runny yolks to serve.
INGREDIENTS LAMB MEATBALLS 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided 1 large shallot, minced (about 2/3 cup) 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb ground lamb 1/2 cup panko 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated 1 egg 2 tsp fresh mint, minced 1/2 tsp cumin 1 tsp dried oregano 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp black pepper
SHAKSHUKA 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 red bell pepper, seeded & diced 1 large onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp sweet paprika 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes 28 oz crushed tomatoes (1 can) 1/2 cup chicken stock pinch of sugar Kosher salt and pepper 2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (divided) 2 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (divided) 2 tsp fresh mint, chopped (divided) 6 eggs 1/2 cup feta, crumbled minced herbs, for garnish (mint, parsely, cilantro) pita bread (optional), for serving

MUSICIAN OF THE MONTH
SPONSORED BY IN TUNE
CHARLIE & HENRY BRYCE
Maplewood Middle School’s Charlie Bryce and his brother Henry, from Delia Bolden Elementary School, are our Musi cians of the Month. Charlie, 12, and Henry, 8, share a pas sion for music that extends across their household and com munities. Charlie began striking the piano keys when he was four years old and recently expanded his instrumental repertoire. “In school, I learned clarinet last year, and this year I’m playing bassoon in both the band and honor’s band,” he shared. This diversity in instruments highlights his love for music’s technical side. “I really like how technical the piano is, how you really have to work hard to play something beautifully.” Henry, who began playing piano at five, has an innate de sire to brighten others’ days with his music. “I enjoy making people happy with my pieces,” he explains. Inspired by his brother to pursue music, Henry is not only devoted to the pi ano but also has his sights set on learning the saxophone be cause, as he says, “I like the way it looks.” Beyond their musical pursuits, the brothers are active in sports, enjoying tennis, golf, skiing, and even fencing. While Char lie’s academic interests lie in Language Arts and Math, Henry favors Math and Science. Their musical inspirations are just as diverse. Charlie loves Adele for her soulful voice, especially cherishing the song “Hello.” Meanwhile, Henry admires Ariana Grande, capti vated by her vocal talent. With their numerous extra-curricular activities, good grades, and dedication to playing instruments, the Bryce brothers are living proof that the less spare time you have, the less time you waste!

HOME DESIGN My real estate partner, Kim, and I were at an open house, viewing a newly renovated home. We wandered into the primary bathroom, a huge space with a stand-alone soaker tub and a narrow, deep, cavernous shower. I opened the large glass shower door and looked at the shower head and hand sprayer at the other end of the space. “Well, they didn’t get the lighting right, but at least they did this correctly,” I said. “What do you mean?” Kim asked. “Notice anything missing under the shower head?” I asked. “The shower caddy with 14 plastic bottles of beauty products?” she answered wryly. I laughed, “That would be my house. No, the water controller is not there. Imagine if it was; you’d step into the shower, then reach all the way to the controller underneath the shower head, turn on the water, and…bam! You’re hit with a blast of icy cold water. Not exactly the way you want to start your morning.” “But it’s not there,” she said. “Right, it’s in the right place. They put it by the shower door so that when you open the door, you can turn on the water at a safe distance and adjust the temperature and water flow without risking a faceful of cold spray,” I answered. “Well, that’s smart,” she commented. “You know, it’s the little things that
most people don’t think about when designing a space that make the biggest difference,” I concluded. “Well, that’s why they need to hire you,” she said offhandedly, walking out of the room.

INTERIOR DESIGN Well, decor lovers… life went ahead and made some plans without consulting me (rude!), and now I’m on a surprise journey with leukemiUGH—which, let’s be real, is an ugly word for an even uglier situation. The good news? It’s treatable, curable, and totally beatable. The not-so-fun news? It’s gonna be grueling. But if there was EVER a moment to lean into the power of our physical surroundings, this is it! Whether you’re in a hospital room, a rental, or just need a little refresh—here are some easy, temporary decor tricks (AKA: ZERO wall or surface damage, people!) to make any space feel more like you. - Beautiful bedding: Because ugly sheets = bad vibes. Pick something you LOVE. - Faux floral garlands & decal stickers: Wrap sad furniture or blank walls in color and life. No watering, no commitment, just vibes. - Command strips: Hang art, silly notes, and glittery pictures for instant joy. - Spring-loaded curtain rods: Soften harsh windows with pretty curtains (no holes needed!) - LED fairy lights: Because EVERYTHING looks better with a soft twinkle. Period. - Removable wall murals: Yes, they exist. Yes, they peel right off when you’re done. And yes, they’re fabulous. Lastly: YOU are also part of the décor! A sparkly pair of earrings? A bright, happy scarf? A leopard-print water bottle? (Why not?!) If life hands you a sterile space, turn it into a damn mood board. Find the joy. And if you can’t find it? Decorate the hell out of something until it appears.
If you’ve ever wondered what’s at the end of the rainbow…

Toe-Kick Lighting: A Simple Upgrade with Big Impact At AV Luxury Design, we help homeowners enhance their spaces with smart lighting solutions. In a recent project, a homeowner chose to add LED tape lighting under their kitchen cabinets and island toe-kicks. This small upgrade made a big difference. The soft glow created a modern, floating effect that added depth and elegance to the kitchen. At night, the gentle illumination improved visibility, making the space safer without the need for bright overhead lights. Integrated into the home’s smart lighting system, the toe-kick lights turned on automatically, adding both convenience and style. This homeowner made the right call by trusting us to enhance their kitchen with subtle yet effective lighting. The result is a space that feels just as stunning in the evening as it does during the day. At AV Luxury Design, we make lighting easy. Whether it’s toe-kick lighting, under-cabinet lighting, or full smart home integration, we’re here to help. Thinking about upgrading your home? Let’s get started! AUDIO AND VIDEO

CONTRACTOR’S CORNER
IS AN ADU FOR YOU?
In October 2020, Maplewood passed legislation allowing for Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs), with South Orange following a few years later. ADUs are intended to take the pressure off a tight rental market, help homeowners with property taxes, and provide an alternative solution for aging parents. The ADU must be smaller in square footage and height than the main home. While regulations vary by municipality, finished space around here is limited to 800 sq ft. Either the main structure or the ADU must be occupied by the owner. Finally, the unit may not be used for short-term rental such as Airbnb. Perhaps the single largest challenge in constructing an ADU is plumbing. In many cases, the main drain line will connect directly to the street, often utilizing a pump to overcome the slope and distance from the road. Typically, this results in demolishing most, if not all, of the driveway. Existing garage conversions would need to have footings at a minimum of 3’, which very few do. Also, the dwelling must comply with updated insulation requirements. This could necessitate added framing to allow for additional insulation space. Cost estimates range from $200,000 to $300,000, not including architect fees or finishes such as tile, cabinets, sinks and faucets, countertops, or light fixtures, which could add up to another $50,000. Given that expense, it’s not surprising that only about half a dozen units have been completed in Maplewood and South Orange combined.

FROM THE DOCTOR BACK PAIN, HEADACHES, AND MORE: Signs You Might Benefit from a Chiropractor Your body often gives you signals when something isn’t quite right. Paying attention to these signs can help you decide if chiropractic care might be beneficial. Chiropractors focus on the health of your spine and nervous system, which affects how your whole body functions. A few common symptoms that may be indicative of a greater health issue include: Back Pain: Ongoing back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor. Whether it’s from sitting too long, lifting heavy objects, or old injuries, back pain may indicate issues with spinal alignment. Headaches: Frequent headaches or migraines can sometimes be linked to tension in the neck or poor posture. Poor Posture: If you slouch or feel like your shoulders are rounded, poor posture could be causing discomfort. Limited Mobility: Difficulty bending, turning your head, or performing daily activities can signal that your joints or spine need attention. Numbness or Tingling: Feeling pins and needles in your arms or legs may be a sign of nerve pressure, often caused by spinal misalignment. If you notice any of these signs, it might be time to visit a chiropractor. A chiropractor can assess your condition and suggest a plan to help improve your mobility, posture, and overall comfort. Keep in mind that chiropractic care isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and results may vary depending on the individual.

FROM THE DOCTOR
LYMPHEDEMA
In honor of Women’s History Month, we are focusing on a condition specific to women and the role of physical therapy in relieving this issue. Lymphedema, a chronic condition, results in swelling due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, often in the arms, chest, or upper body. Breast cancer treatments, such as lymph node removal or radiation therapy, can damage the lymphatic system and impair proper drainage. Women with lymphedema may notice heaviness, tightness, or discomfort, impacting daily activities and overall well-being. Physical therapy serves as a cornerstone of lymphedema treatment, providing patients with evidence-based interventions to reduce swelling, enhance mobility, and prevent complications. Physical Therapists utilize a range of techniques, including: • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized, gentle massage technique that encourages lymph fluid movement and reduces swelling. • Compression Therapy: The use of bandages or garments to maintain fluid reduction and prevent further swelling. • Exercise Programs: Tailored movement routines that promote circulation and lymphatic function while maintaining strength and flexibility. • Skin Care Education: Guidance on proper skincare to minimize the risk of infections such as cellulitis. • Patient Empowerment: Teaching women self-management strategies, including self-massage and at-home exercises, to maintain progress. Physical therapy for lymphedema addresses physical symptoms and fosters emotional and psychological well-being. By reducing pain and discomfort, women regain confidence in their daily routines, from dressing independently to engaging in hobbies they love. Comprehensive lymphedema care ensures that survivors receive the support they need to thrive.

FINANCIAL FOCUS Going through a divorce poses emotional challenges and can disrupt your life, but it doesn’t have to be financially devastating. You can take proactive steps to protect yourself. Cover divorce costs: Divorce can be expensive. You may need to use your income and savings or explore borrowing from your retirement plan if allowed. Build a budget: Establish a temporary budget. Your attorney can advise on the duration of your separation in contested cases. Open separate accounts: Consult your attorney to start separate bank and brokerage accounts while minimizing impact on your spouse. Understand retirement benefits: Know the value of your 401(k), IRAs, and pensions. You might negotiate retirement benefit splits through a qualified domestic relations order (QDRO). AFTER THE DIVORCE FINALIZES: Complete financial separation: Close joint accounts, change financial access, remove your name from bills, and finish asset transfers. Create a new budget: Develop a long-term budget including any support received. Adjust spending based on the divorce agreement for expenses and responsibilities. Review protection plans: Update insurance policies. For health insurance, consider COBRA or explore new plans. Update estate plans: Work with professionals to revise estate documents. Check and update beneficiary designations on accounts. Consult a tax professional: Address tax filing status changes, dependents, and tax implications of asset allocations. Taking these steps can help secure your financial position and ease the transition into the next phase of life. Here are some strategies to consider: BEFORE THE DIVORCE FINALIZES:

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
DAVE GILES
What does it mean to be an artist in today’s world? For Dave Giles, it’s about blending creativity, emotion, and community to forge connections and tell stories that resonate. Originally from Detroit, MI, Dave’s journey through urban landscapes like Newark, Philadelphia, and Chicago has profoundly shaped his artistic voice. These cities—alive with contrast and texture—have inspired his work and molded his approach to life and art. A dedicated artist and creative professional, Dave’s commitment to community remains central to his mission. He has collaborated with local businesses such as The Cannaboss,
SOMA Studio Arts, and D&I Fitness, using his expertise in digital marketing, social media, and design to help them thrive. His creative contributions extend beyond visual art into filmmaking, with documentaries showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival, archived at Harvard University, and displayed at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Dave’s art, rooted in movement, light, and emotion, reflects his childhood experiences, including formative painting trips with his grandfather. His evolving artistic process spans multiple mediums, and he plans to return to oil painting, printmaking, and sculpture, further expanding his creative exploration. Exhibited in Detroit, New York, Arles, France, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Dave’s work is sold both locally and online. Currently, he is creating new pieces inspired by local landmarks while preparing to launch the Aude School of Artists in Quillan, France, where artists will gather to learn and collaborate. Dave will divide his time between SOMA and Quillan, nurturing his vision for an artistic haven and creative exchange.

MAPLEWOODSTOCK DID YOU KNOW.... • For the last 22 years, Maplewoodstock has been our community’s best FREE live music and arts event;
• Our costs to produce this festival have increased almost 30% since COVID 2019;
• Maplewoodstock is run by an all-volunteer committee;
• Costs include a professional production company for sound and stage, compensating headline acts and local bands, and all other logistics (including Port-a-Potty rentals, township police and public works expenses, insurance, permitting, signage, and more). Our motto has long been “a festival OF and FOR the community”. That’s why we need your support to keep Maplewoodstock the amazing free event that it is. Our goal this winter/spring 2025 is to raise at least $20,000 of additional funds so our 20th festival (over 22 years) can be the best ever! Text “MAPLEWOODSTOCK” to 53-555 or visit givebutter.com/maplewoodstock2025 to help or join our Donor’s Circle ($100+).
• While Maplewood Township is supportive of our festival, the Maplewoodstock festival receives no direct financial contribution from the township or your tax dollars; • We fund this festival almost entirely through merchandise sales, advertising, sponsorships, food and arts vendor fees, the beer garden (in partnership with the local South Orange Elks lodge #1154); • Maplewoodstock is produced by Music & Arts Education Project (MAEP), a Maplewood-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting arts education in SOMA and in the SOMSD public schools;
