When you think of a true Southern city, Tallahassee probably doesn’t initially come to mind. But Florida’s capital city will have you thinking di ff erently by the time you leave. Kick-start your visit by getting into the Southern spirit with a visit to Mission San Luis, a reconstructed Apalachee-Spanish living history museum and the only reconstructed 17th-century mission in the Southeast. There are plenty of hands on activities, including archery, archaeology site tours and historical presentations. Tallahassee is also the place to take in the full beauty of a Southern city. Drive down Centerville Road and get lost in the breathtaking canopy of trees that surround you — one of nine stunning canopy roads in the region that cover more than 78 miles. Alternatively, you can take in the sights on foot in the historic neighborhoods between Call Street and

Park Avenue Park. The moss-covered trees, ancient cemeteries and historic homes, including the famous Civil War–era Knott House Museum, make this area truly special. If you’d like to see more greenery still, head to the Alfred B Maclay Gardens State Park, which has various nature trails perfect for seeing the tropical fl ora and fauna — there are hundreds of camellias and azaleas. Blooming season is from January to April, with the fl oral peak in mid- to late March. As the capital city of Florida, Tallahassee is also, naturally, home to the impressive Museum of Florida History. This state-themed museum opened in 1977 and houses artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Florida’s vast history. Also, be sure to check out the permanent exhibitions covering World War II and Florida during the Civil War.
