Plumb Line Anatomical perspective . In anatomy, a plumb line refers to a vertical line that is used as a reference to assess the alignment of various structures in the body. This line is typically imagined to hang from a point just above the external auditory meatus (opening of the ear) and passes through the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints. Postural perspective . From a postural standpoint, the plumb line is a valuable tool for evaluating the alignment of the body in relation to the gravitational force. When an individual is in a neutral, well-aligned posture, the body segments should align along the imaginary plumb line, providing a balanced distribution of weight.
