SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

As we spring into action this season, we are inching closer to the finish line and the end of the school year. It’s a time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and to look ahead at what’s to come. It brings me great joy to highlight the awards and accomplishments in this spring edition. In recognition of fall sports, our district had more than 130 student athletes who were awarded academic all-state including football, volleyball, and cross country. These individuals are selected based on their athletic performance, excellent GPA, and strong moral character. They set the bar high, and I’m confident these student-athletes will continue to grow.

In Lamar CISD, excellence is not just a word, it is our mindset and the culture we create. The students who come out of our Athletic and Fine Arts Departments become ambassadors and trailblazers for excellence everywhere they go. We invite you to follow us during this final season of the 2022 2023 school year. It’s sure to be an exciting journey as we continue the proud traditions of extraordinary achievement, scholarship, and citizenship. Thank you,

Roosevelt Nivens, Ed.D. Lamar CISD Superintendent

Teamwork Makes It All Work

All great teams share a common quality, the ability to act as one. Teamwork allows individuals with different talents and skills to achieve greatness as a unit. A team that understands how to work together will transform ordinary athletes into extraordinary champions. I am extremely blessed to have great teammates in Lamar CISD. Not only do I have a great team in the Athletic Office, but my teammates across departments in the District provide unique skills, resources, and support in everything we do. My teammates help me through the challenges, and they play an active role in all our achievements. As we roll out our spring sports, I see great teamwork on every campus and in every sport. True success takes every athlete working together including the ones who are front and center, and the students who are cheering from the bench. It takes both athletes to win. In this edition, you’ll see evidence of our student athletes excelling in the classroom including our Academic

All-State Award winners. You can also see some of our student athletes who will be pursuing higher education with the help of athletics. We believe the influence of teamwork never ends and it’s evident in every accomplishment. As we begin to think about wrapping up the school year, I want to congratulate the Lamar CISD student athletes who will walk across the stage and receive their diplomas this May. I also want to thank the multitude of individuals who displayed exemplary teamwork to get them to this point. We all know that tomorrow’s leaders are built in today’s locker rooms, and the world better be ready for the leaders from the Class of 2023. They are bound for greatness. Come out and see some of these athletes on the ball fields, tracks, tennis courts and golf courses this spring. Keep your eyes open for the extraordinary teamwork that makes Lamar CISD great! WHAT WILL HE DO FOR AN ENCORE? Ben McGown is the back to-back district champion in the pole vault. Can the senior make it three-in-a row? “I’ve been training hard for this season,” said McGown. “I drive up to College Station three times a week for pole vault practice at my club team (Mac Vault) as well as lifting weights and mentally preparing before each meet. I hope to leave a legacy here at Fulshear.” He has his sights on another PR this season. His top mark came at the 2022 Area Meet, where got over the bar at 15-feet. “It has taken a lot of hard work and sacrifice to be able to reach the goals I’ve been able to achieve,” McGown said. “I’ve had to battle to be a two-time district champion and an area champion. This past year it was more physical. At district, I was going over a bar to win the meet and it fell off and busted my face open. They didn’t want me to compete anymore, but I asked the trainer to give me some butterfly tape and I got back to it. In the Area Round, I injured my back in warmups but pushed through and came out with a double PR and a gold medal.” That kind of toughness may have been bolstered through his time spent playing safety for the Fulshear football team, which advanced three rounds in the UIL postseason this past fall. “Playing football and

the generational curse of not going to college, who’s going to do it? So, ‘Why Not Me?’ That’s always been my saying.” That confidence will be invaluable for the Longhorns. “When it comes to me being a leader and the catcher of the team, I’m definitely a ‘hard-ass’ in regards to softball, because I know how locked in we should be and what we accomplish when we are,” she said. “I guess I’m in the middle because sometimes I like to have fun and goof around, but when it’s game time we’ve got to take care of business.” The senior Longhorn’s accolades and skills have ‘garnered’ her the chance to play for Florida Memorial University in Miami. Furthermore, Garner also has a passion for sports medicine and photography. She has been published by The Wrangler – the George Ranch student newspaper, and VYPE Magazine . “I like to catch people in motion with quality pictures that I’d like photographers to take of me,” she said. “I know I don’t really have the option for people to take certain pictures of me, so I like to do it for others so they can feel how I’d want to feel. Eventually, I want to be a sports broadcaster. Whether I’m in front of or behind the camera, is still to be determined.” For now, she will continue to make news at George Ranch in front of the camera behind the plate.

To make it to the next level as an athlete, an individual must be able to work well with others. However, one must possess a significant amount of self-confidence to inspire themselves – a trait Garner does not lack. “The main answer (people give as their main motivation) that everyone tends to say is their mom or dad,” she said. “But, in all reality, it’s me. I just feel like if I don’t do it, who’s going to do it? If I don’t break

for George Ranch’s new campaign. “I’m a natural-born leader,” said Garner. “I carry myself a certain way. Me being not necessarily cocky, but confident in myself makes my game better. I think that rubs off on my team. If I’m not having a good day, neither is the team. So, when I realized that, I thought ‘OK, I have to get it together. No bad days’. When I step on the diamond, all the insecurities go away.”

FOLLOWING GEORGE RANCH SOFTBALL’S IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE LAST SEASON, IN WHICH THEY FINISHED SECOND IN THE DISTRICT EN ROUTE TO AN APPEARANCE IN THE UIL 6A REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS, THE LONGHORNS ARE RETURNING TO THE DIAMOND TO PUSH THEIR PROGRAM FURTHER INTO THE PLAYOFF RACE. Senior catcher Mariah Garner led the team in RBIs last year and looks to build upon her team’s success, as she energizes the surge

ANY TEAM WORTH ITS SALT, MUST HAVE AN ACE ON THE MOUND. For the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs, that is lefty Jonathan Anders, who exploded onto the scene as a junior. And he has some swag. The moustache is his calling card, but he can pitch and hit with some of the best in the city. “Our primary goal this season is to make the playoffs,” said Anders. “Before we can even think about a district title, making the postseason is the focus. We’re leading with our seniors in the locker room and on the field right now. So, we’re just trying to get the younger guys on the same level, teach ‘em right and stress that mentality to win.” It all starts with Anders, who hit at a .325 clip, while going 5-2 on the season with a 1.14 ERA. For his performance, he was named to the all-district team and was voted the District-5A Pitcher of the Year. “My goal this year is to get Pitcher of the Year again, as well as get a college offer,” Anders said. “I have a few but none of them have felt good yet. I hope that changes this season. Waiting to be called can be stressful. Several of my friends are getting offers and committing, and I’m just waiting to get that chance. I’m going to do my best to prove myself this season and it will come.” Considering this is his final season at Lamar Consolidated, Anders will look to regain his 2022 form and then some. Furthermore, he intends to be one of the Mustangs’ leaders to help shape the future of the program. “I’m going to try to encourage my teammates, especially the underclassmen, to work hard all throughout the year,” said Anders. “Nothing is given, so I want to stress that mental and physical toughness can push through the adversity we will face.”

WITH THE UIL TRACK & FIELD SEASON UNDERWAY, RANDLE HIGH WILL LOOK TO JUNIOR SPEEDSTER SHANAJE’ CUMMINGS TO REPRESENT WHEN IT COMES TO THE MEDAL STAND. Cummings is off to a fast start this Spring, given that she won the Tri-Meet (Randle, Magnolia and Hastings) in the 200-meters (PR: 25.50), claimed second in the Buffalo Relays and finished fifth in the Fort Bend ISD Invitational. VYPE was able to catch up with the Randle Lion to see what makes the sprinter tick. Welcome to VYPE’s 411… VYPE: So, what got you into track and field? CUMMINGS: My parents asked me if I wanted to do it when I was about nine years old, so it kind of took off from there. I ended up really enjoying it because I just like to run. It makes me calm and I can focus on the moment. VYPE: What’s your goal for this season? CUMMINGS : I want to improve on my finishes and drop my times. Ultimately, I want to make it to State, and potentially be a collegiate runner after I’ve graduated. VYPE: Who or what is your CUMMINGS: My parents for sure. They’re all about track and are there to support their babies. My brother is a sophomore, and my sister is in seventh grade, and inspiration behind your passion for athletics?

HERNANDEZ IS FUTURE OF TERRY BASEBALL BETTER BE \\ Matthew Ogle

B.F. TERRY BASEBALL IS BACK ON THE DIAMOND THIS SPRING WITH A DETERMINATION TO GET INTO THE PLAYOFF CONVERSATION. Following a 2022 season that saw Terry finish in the No. 6 spot in their tough district, the Rangers look to flip the script. Sophomore shortstop Andrew Hernandez will play a significant role in the turnaround as he anchors the infield and sets the table in the batting lineup. “We didn’t get where we wanted to go last year, so we’re looking to change that,” said Hernandez. “We’re going to be ready to get out on the field and win. It’s a mentality.” As is the case with so many in the sport, Hernandez was inspired by his family to compete in baseball at an early age. “My dad was really the one who got me into the game,” he said. “I used to play soccer until he got me into baseball, and I just fell in love with it.” Shortstop can be a challenging position to play, which is why the task tends to fall upon the veterans of any given team. However, the sophomore intends to thrive in the middle infield just like his favorite player — Jeremy Peña of the Astros. “My goal is to develop my skills over the course of the season,” Hernandez said. “I’m just a sophomore right now so there’s still plenty of time to improve, but I want to be the best I can by the time I’m a senior. I want to leave a legacy here.”

Ohl and Marcus Cuevas are really valuable to this team as well. The way we keep things level throughout the season is to never lose our competitiveness. We’re always fighting for a spot and looking to prove our skills to our team and to everybody else out there.”

Juan Rodriguez is one of them. Eric Garza has a super strong arm. Clayton
