Personality assessments have been around for decades, and used for everything from formal soft-skills training to career aptitude counseling. There’s no shortage of evaluative tools for helping people attain some sense of internal acuity. But as the old adage says, ‘quantity doesn’t always equate to quality.’There’s still room for a very different, reliable way to understand yourself and others.

I’m excited to introduce a new personality assessment: Personality Style at Work, the most statistically valid assessment we’ve ever created. It’s a highly effective yet simple tool with all the rigor and reliability you have come to expect from HRDQ, And best of all, you don’t need certification to facilitate it, making it even more of a stand-out from other well-known personality assessments. Your personality is the sum of who you are and how you approach every angle of life. It encompasses your career choices and how you approach tasks. It influences what you like to do your free time. It can also be your competitive advantage if you understand how it works and how to use it. Personality Style at Work delivers to participants a detailed feedback report, called their Core Profile, which indicates their primary personality style, and strength of preference for using each of the drivers, or motivators, associated with their style. By using simplistic language combined with a highly accurate assessment, participants easily retain knowledge of their style and quickly learn to use that knowledge to gain success in relationships across their work life. What’s My Communication Style? Third Edition Eileen M. Russo, PhD

What your communication style says about you. Communication is the lifeblood of any organization, and effective communication skills are the building blocks of “people skills.” If managers cannot communicate clearly and persuasively with employees, and employees with customers, then other vital goals are forever out of reach. Say goodbye to aspirations for capable leadership, teamwork, customer service, or even the ability to execute a coherent business strategy. If you want to bring about meaningful improvements to communication skills, the best way to begin is to build a better understanding of personal communication styles and its effects on others. What’s My Communication Style is a proven training assessment that identifies an individual’s preferred style — Direct , Spirited , Considerate , or Systematic — and the communication behaviors that distinguish it. Part of the best-selling HRDQ Style Series, the assessment and its supporting materials provide a practical and easy-to-use “language” that enables lasting insights into how to gain mastery over one’s own communication behavior and how to interpret the behavior of others — in any situation. What’s My Communication Style is a powerful centerpiece for management development and interpersonal skills training. Using leadership style to get others to follow. Effective leadership at every level — from frontline supervisors to top executives — is a key characteristic of successful organizations. The statement Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard made years ago still applies today: effective leaders positively influence the behavior of their followers, getting them to work toward shared goals. But leaders are individuals, and because of that, they influence others in unique ways. While one leader rallies troops around a cause, another focuses on bolstering a team’s self-confidence. Whose way of leading is the best? It all depends on the situation — and the leader’s ability to flex their leadership style. What’s My Leadership Style is a learning tool for anyone who needs to influence others toward achieving a goal. This best-selling assessment quickly and accurately identifies a preference for one of four styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, and Systematic. Leaders with style knowledge are better equipped to assess and adjust their actions, interpret the behavior of others, and improve their ability to respond effectively in any situation. See page 7 for pricing.

Mars Rover Challenge Third Edition Eileen M. Russo, PhD and Matthew P. Eckler Game, 4–4.5 hours per game You don’t have to leave earth for stellar skill development. Long gone are the days where collaboration served as an intermittent, as-needed approach to conquering company initiatives. Employers have become increasingly aware of its widespread benefits and have grown to value it as a constant in the workplace—encouraging collaborative behaviors and even going so far as to redesign office layouts to stimulate it. However, some people need to see it in action and practice it for themselves before they can fully embrace its benefits. Mars Rover Challenge (formerly Mars Surface Rover ) provides a powerful, unique hands- on experience that allows participants to connect with the concept of collaboration at a deep and personal level. Participants are immersed in a team construction activity, whereby they are tasked by the World Space Agency to build a prototype rover for traversing Mars’ rocky terrain. Two versions of the game are available. In the leadership version, participants work in teams to construct a rover, led by a teammember who (unknown to the rest of the team) adopts one of three contrasting leadership styles—traditional (command-and-control), passive, and collaborative. Each of the three styles engenders very different feelings and emotions among team members. And together, they provide a very real demonstration of the effects different styles can have on morale, motivation, and performance. The teamwork version again calls for participants to work in teams, only this time the game is played in two rounds. In round one, participants simulate working in siloed departments as they build the rover. In round two, they work together collaboratively. The end result in each round usually is markedly different, and the process and outcomes make for lively discussion and usually quite a few Ah Ahs! Both versions demonstrate, in a very practical and gratifying manner, the power of collaboration and enable participants to cultivate the mindset and behaviors integral to effective implementation. The differences lie only in the lens through which collaboration is viewed—either from the perspective of leadership or teamwork. While each game has been designed to function independently, using them in tandem presents a more thorough, holistic picture of collaboration and the positive effects it has on employee engagement and productivity.

COMMUNICATION

Learning to Listen Third Edition Laurie Ribble Libove, MS Assessment, Workbook, and Workshop, 1– 4 hours Most people claim to be good listeners. But that’s not what we hear. When people listen, organizations gain a competitive advantage from better communication, morale, and productivity to reduced absenteeism, turnover, and conflict. However, studies show people remember only half of what they hear, even moments after they’ve heard it. And that’s not all. On average, people spend 45% of their time listening, yet only 2% report they’ve had formal education on the topic. Research makes the message loud and clear — it’s time to add listening to your training line-up. Learning to Listen is a communication instrument that focuses on the visible — and invisible — aspects of listening behavior: Staying Focused, Capturing the Message, and Helping the Speaker. And while most listening assessments measure style, this self- assessment measures skill level. Because it targets actual behavior, individuals are able to take immediate action to maximize their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses. The result is employees who are better equipped to handle customer complaints, negotiate contracts, manage teams, and more.

L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S • Determine listening effectiveness in three dimensions • Explore the visible and invisible aspects of listening • Learn what it takes both physically — and mentally — to listen • Understand common barriers to effective listening • Create a plan to put new skills into immediate action

Personal Style Inventory Third Edition R. Craig Hogan, PhD, and David W. Champagne, EdD Assessment and Workshop, 1.5 hours Know thyself.

Self-understanding is a necessary prerequisite for learning, growth, and getting along with others. Without it, no amount of formal training or on-the-job experience will enable people to reach their full potential — or improve their relationships with peers, coworkers, and managers. Blind to their own behavioral patterns, they will continue to trip over themselves in the same old ways. So, as a trainer, where do you begin? A best seller for more than 25 years, the Personal Style Inventory (PSI) is an accurate personality-style assessment and classroom workshop that reveals an individual’s dominant personality style and sheds useful light on the critical question: Why do I behave the way I do? Based on Carl Jung’s well-known personality theory, the 32-item PSI identifies deep- seated style preferences along four paired dimensions: Extraversion or Introversion, Sensing or Intuiting, Thinking or Feeling, and Perceiving or Judging. A combination self assessment and classroom workshop, the PSI makes it easy for participants to “see” how they think, act, and feel. It’s an important first step toward improving your organization’s communication, teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal relationships. For an even more in-depth learning experience, follow the PSI with Exploring Personal Styles, a collection of 30 reproducible exercises ranging in length from one to five hours.

L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S • Identify an individual’s dominant personality style • Learn about the 16 personality styles including strengths and trouble spots • Understand how the styles interact — and

Personality Style at Work Assessment Derek T. Y. Mann, Ph.D. Assessment, 10–15 minutes to take Personality Style at Work (PSAW) is HRDQ’s latest and most statistically accurate assessment. It’s a simple, but highly effective tool with all the statistical rigor and validity you expect to come with HRDQ. Extending beyond the mere measurement of style, the PSAW assessment tool measures both the core behaviors that make-up an individual’s style and the lens through which they choose to navigate their world. At the foundation of each style—Direct, Considerate, Spirited, and Systematic—is a set of three drivers that guide our actions, decisions, and general life approach. Delving even deeper into the framework of personality is a look at the lens of expressiveness and assertiveness—the learned behaviors that we use as a means of coping with the demands and expectations placed upon us and which help to explain how we can appear to have one personality at work and another in our personal life. Personality Style at Work assessment takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Individuals respond to 94 different items designed to help them identify their behavioral preferences, shedding light on how they react to and interact with the world around them. Most statements ask them to respond by indicating the frequency with which they approach, think about, or act in the way described. Each response is scored and used to generate a detailed, highly personalized feedback report called the Core Profile. The report identifies an individual’s primary personality style including its core preferences and behaviors, the degree to which they practice each of the three drivers associated with their style and the role assertiveness and expressiveness plays in the effectiveness of their style. The report also offers are numerous tips and techniques for building rapport, and optimizing relationships and interactions with other styles. The report concludes with a section on using the information in PSAW to create a personal action and development plan.

Each style comprises three drivers or motivators that define what motivates us and where we focus our energy and attention.

Lacking the complicated code at the basis of other personality-focused assessments, PSAW’S simplistic language and presentation make it easy for participants to retain the knowledge of their style and to use that knowledge to better understand their strengths and to highlight and pinpoint areas for development. Personality Style at Work is, at its core, a developmental tool and is suitable for anyone interested in understanding how their behaviors affect their own performance and interactions with others. As such it has applications in leadership development, management and supervisory training, team culture, team building, communication, and career development.

The Rainforest Game Amy Judith Tananbaum Game, 1.5–2 hours The Rainforest Game allows geographically dispersed teams to experience collaboration as they attempt to complete a five-foot puzzle. Teams then consider the challenges in the context of real-life experience and discuss the four critical skills needed to work together effectively. Small teams representing the member organizations of the consortium are challenged to complete the rainforest initiative’s poster, which arrives in the form of a five-foot-long puzzle. Each organization has chosen to sponsor a specific endangered species, so each team has pieces of the overall picture as well as its sponsored animal. Because no one team has all the pieces, they must be able to work collaboratively in order to successfully complete the task at hand.

Jungle Escape Fifth Edition Rollin Glaser, EdD and Christine Glaser, MEd Game, 1.5 hours “Why can’t these people work as a team?”

You’re probably familiar with this plea. As training professionals, we know teamwork is vital to organizational success. Yet so many teams continue to struggle with it. Why? The answer may be as simple as this: they don’t have a clear vision of how a well-oiled team looks, acts, and feels. You can stand in front of your audience and tell — even push — them to be better team members, but we have a better idea. Let them experience it. Whisk teams away from the traditional classroom with Jungle Escape, the high-energy game that’s been a best seller and perennial favorite among trainers since it was first introduced more than 30 years ago. Immersed in a survival scenario, teams are challenged to work together to build a make- shift helicopter with only limited parts — and each other. Jungle Escape’s hands-on design enables players to discover and practice critical group-process skills such as team planning, problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution. Before they know it, they’ve experienced first-hand the difference between a Cohesive team and one that’s either Fragmented or Divergent. Jungle Escape is an excellent way to introduce basic team skills, improve productivity between work groups, or energize mature teams. So don’t settle for another ho-hum team-building activity. Give Jungle Escape a whirl. We guarantee it will be a powerful learning adventure your audience won’t soon forget!
