Welcome

@ELITETRAVELER AROUND THEWORLD After being in-and-out of lockdown for most of the year, the Elite Traveler team is cautiously getting back out there to experience the new normal at hotels and spas, or reminiscing on previous travels and dreaming of future adventures. For daily updates, follow us on Twitter @elite_traveler and on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest @elitetraveler

Well, what an annus horribilis that was. But, as we wind down ahead of the much- needed holiday season and look to the year ahead, I’m allowing optimism and hope to creep in. The New Year brings new perspectives, and I have (as I’m sure many of you have) begun to view life through a different lens, focusing on the really important things. For me, that is time and energy well spent. And that is the theme we had in mind when we created our series of new luxury databases: How to save you time and energy. You already rely on Elite Traveler to provide the most up-to-date and relevant information on the finer things in life, be they hotel suites,

yachts, jets or cars. But how we present this information has perhaps been slightly old-fashioned. So we have revamped how you access this information digitally. The first searchable database we are launching coincides with our featured ranking — the Top 100 Suites. Everyone has a different idea of the perfect stay; for me it’s a king-sized bed to myself with no baby in sight and lying in that bed past 7:01am. For you, it might be a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site, your own butler or far- reaching ocean views. So, in order to make life easier, our new database allows you to plug in your criteria and then out pop the results for all the relevant suites. Whether you’re planning a multigenerational family getaway to South Africa, or a romantic visit for two to Paris, we’ll help you find the top accommodations. Our efforts to save you time don’t stop there — later on in the issue we’re saving time with our top fast jets. These are the jets to jump on when you’re in a rush; they can transport you to your destination in a hair’s breadth of the speed of sound. And our Men’s Watches pages focus on world time watches. You can glance at your wrist and see exactly what time it is for a loved one in Florida when you’re in London for business. In a world that suddenly seems very large, very far away and very disconnected, these marvels bring us all a bit closer. We’re also focusing on craftsmanship and innovation. And that’s something that we can all appreciate — the wonderful uniqueness that human hands can create. Our Object of Desire is a sculpture adorning a bottle of champagne; our Design feature focuses on the gift of giving art; and our Motoring pages take you as far away as you can imagine from a factory assembly line, to the workshops of Ferrari and Bentley. They are ingrained in deep tradition and the magic of human touch — these are the finer details that go into elevating something from the mundane to the truly extraordinary. And that is what our Top 100 Suites do. They take a relatively simple concept of a place to rest your head, and elevate it to something truly exceptional. These suites aren’t just about a night in a hotel; they are an experience in themselves, designed to fulfill your every whim and fantasy. This edition’s Explore section starts with the top hotel buyouts — ideal for the post Covid-19 world, since you can hire these hotels out in their entirety for your friends, family or employees. Whether you’re experiencing a Caribbean island or a chalet in the French Alps, do so in style...and in total, splendid isolation. If the thought of boarding a plane still seems like a world away, jump in your car instead and explore the wilds of Utah with our road trip guide. Wind your way through national parks and desert wilderness, stopping to sample the delights of Sundance’s Park City along the way. Finally, we finish off sipping a glass of champagne in an infinity pool overlooking the Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne... And breathe...

Samantha Coles marvels at the mystical views over Lake Lucerne from Bürgenstock Resort’s infinity pool in Switzerland.

Thea Halstead walks in the footsteps of King Henry VIII at one of London’s newest boutique hotels, The Mitre Hampton Court.

Kim Ayling experiences a bespoke 24-carat gold facial, designed by Italian skincare wizard Pietro Simone, in one of the Beauty Treatment Rooms at Harrods.

Alex Martin is one of the first guests to stay in the Mayfair Townhouse, a boutique luxury hotel situated in the heart of London’s most exclusive area.

Object of Desire by Samantha Coles

LA GRANDE DAMES Known for her avant-garde work (she’s been dubbed the ‘Princess of Polka Dots’), Yayoi Kusama is a celebrated Japanese contemporary artist, perhaps best-known for her kaleidoscopic installations and larger-than-life sculptures. In a partnership with Veuve Clicquot to mark the house’s newest vintage, La Grande Dame 2012, Kusama has created a limited-edition gift box of the champagne that features her signature polka dots, as well as a whimsical floral sculpture. The piece, entitled My Heart That Blooms in the Darkness of Night , was custom-made to wrap around the magnum bottle. A tribute to nature, the playful sculpture has ornate, blooming flowers and tentacle-esque leaves, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. It took over 250 hours to create, and only 100 are available — and only by request. The vintage itself has been created in honor of Madame Clicquot, a trailblazer who stormed the industry with her bold moves as a female entrepreneur in the early 1800s. Despite the two visionary women being separated by over 150 years, this is not the first time they have collaborated: In 2006, Kusama reimaged a portrait of Madame Clicquot using her iconic polka dots for a charity auction in Tokyo. La Grande Dame 2012 $195, sculpture $30,000, veuveclicquot.com

One day, after gazing at a pattern of red flowers on the tablecloth, I looked up to see that the ceiling, the windows, and the columns seemed to be plastered with the same red floral pattern. I saw the entire room, my entire body, and the entire universe covered with red flowers, and in that instant my soul was obliterated and I was restored, returned to infinity, to eternal time and absolute space. This was not an illusion but reality itself. YAYOI KUSAMA

Picture an assembly line, machines swiftly moving parts down it until a fully realized car emerges. For this duo of manufacturers, that couldn’t be further from the process. Imbued with a sense of tradition and respect for the quality of design, hand finishes, bespoke paints and a merging of craft and technology, assembling these machines requires decades of knowledge as well as human hands

Ferrari F8 Spider Technological Craftsmanship

All images Ferrari F8 Spider

Ferrari’s willingness to tap into history as a road map for its future begets an unparalleled level of expertise. Take Maranello’s newest mid-rear-engined car, the F8 Spider, which reimages the Prancing Horse’s two-seater Berlinetta. To the uninitiated, this architecture is an homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. It’s also a favorite, debuting in 1975 with the 308 GTB and adopted for the GTO and F40, arguably the beginning of Ferrari’s supercars of the 1980s. Among enthusiasts, iconic may be too weak a word. Throughout four decades, the Italians have been finessing; the resulting F8 Spider and its hardtop sibling, the F8 Tributo, are the most aerodynamically efficient series-production mid-rear-engined Berlinettas. Optimal weight balance comes standard, as does 710-horsepower. As European emissions restrictions tightened, Ferrari artfully pivoted, adding a new Gasoline Particulate Filter. The F8 Spider’s subsequent exhaust notes range from a deep timbre to a dulcet sigh. Perhaps the most significant example of technological craftsmanship comes by way of the S-Duct, or how Ferrari forces air through the car. Gleaning the S-Duct from the storied Ferrari F1 racing program (and the 488 Pista) moves the air intakes from the flanks to the rear. They now sit on either side of the blown spoiler. Merging past and present, the redesigned spoiler wraps around the tail lights. Looking forward, its shape produces greater airflow to the engine, which means increased power and dynamic pressure. Simultaneously returning to the classic twin light cluster and body-colored tail provides allusions aplenty to the early eight-cylinder Berlinetta’s. From $297,250, ferrari.com

The new Bentayga isn’t a fresh debut, but rather a mid-cycle redux. Done well, the art of the refresh allows manufacturers a subtle flex versus a splashy launch, a perpetual refining and redefining of an automobile that demonstrates thoughtful evolution and exudes excitement. Consider this: Bentley launched the somewhat delicate but wholly deliberate Bentayga in 2015. The SUV now accounts for 45 percent of the British brand’s global sales. An undeniable game changer for the 100-year-old coachbuilder, demand steadily continues. Its successor, the new Bentayga, adds interior delights and an exterior refresh to the 4.0-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged V8. From the 14 hides of leather used to upholster the redesigned seats, which feature hand cross-stitching and seat micro-piping, to the addition of two veneer options of Hawaiian Koa and Crown Cut Walnut, bespoke detailing remains at the core of Bentley Bentayga Modern Civility

Bentley’s interior design language. The Naim for Bentley audio system thrills, delivering 1,780W of power to 20 speakers with eight listening modes. Pushing the confluence of luxury and utility, the new 542-horsepower Bentayga offers eight drive modes, four on-road and four off-road, although it’s probably best to keep those stately 22-inch wheels on pavement — marrying mud with deep woolen floor mats will surely have regrettable consequences. Unlike some manufacturers that merely introduce a racing stripe or a smattering of new colors to their mid-cycle refreshes, Bentley altered every single panel, from the new matrix grille, across the longer side vent, to the lattice-patterned elliptical taillights. There’s undeniable purpose and an intriguing duality in the new Bentayga. From $177,000, bentleymotors.com

The 'Melody' concept cabin is inspired by the color palette and shapes seen in nature

Suite in the sky

While there are certainly a number of luxurious private jets on the market, the Airbus ACJ320neo takes it up a notch. The aircraft is based on the A320neo (a passenger plane used by major airlines around the world) but modified for private use. The result? The ACJ320neo is twice as wide as traditional business jets and has the tallest cabin in the industry, resulting in three times more cabin space than its competitors. With such an abundance of space, there’s plenty of room to play with: The ‘Melody’ cabin concept has a kitchen, master lounge with a sofa and conference/dining area, home cinema, anteroom, and a master suite with sofa and bathroom. It is more akin to a stylish apartment, and the cabin can be configured to your preferences. This concept is inspired by the seamless shapes and color palette seen in nature: Think forest greens, neutral tones, curved walls and fixtures, and hexagonal light displays. The areas harmoniously flow from one ‘room’ to the next, and the layout is equipped for long-haul flights — which is just as well, as the aircraft can fly nonstop from London to Beijing; Moscow to Los Angeles. And thanks to the CFM LEAP-1A engine (you can choose between this or the Pratt &Whitney PW1100G engine), there is a 15 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and also a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. $110m, airbus.com

The world’s largest online art gallery and a leader in online art buying, the company already offers an at-home art advisory service, as well as an art subscription where an expert curator adds a new original piece to your personal collection every month for a year. It now offers a unique collection of bespoke gifts created by the gallery’s most popular independent artists. The available gifts include a photoshoot with fine art photographer Xan Padrón, renowned for his Time Lapse series of images that capture people passing in front of a well-known location (Padrón sits unnoticed in a single spot for two hours to get the shots). He will scout the area of your choosing to find the perfect location, and photograph you and up to six friends or family members. Another choice is a striking mural by acclaimed street artist Bollee Patino: He can design and paint an artwork on an interior or exterior wall of your choice, turning a blank canvas into a unique piece of art. A Saatchi art curator and Patino will work with you to develop a conceptual plan; he will then visit your home to bring the vision to life and create a one-of-a-kind mural. If you’re after a different kind of mural, consider sprucing up an athletic court with a vibrant painting. William LaChance, an acclaimed painter whose bold and striking works have been featured in Architectural Digest and Vogue , will create a one-off design for a tennis or basketball court. Wine & Spirits by Alex Martin

Kindred spirits

TAKE TWO// COLLABORATIVE CREATIONS

Any storied brand can trace back to a seminal moment that put it on the road to success. For both Bowmore Whisky and Aston Martin, it arrived in 1964. For Bowmore, the year marked the arrival of a steam boiler that brought an end to coal-fired production. It was the first distillation from this boiler that produced a spirit that became one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world, the Black Bowmore. For Aston Martin, 1964 was the year the DB5 car captivated audiences in the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger . To this day, the DB5 is one of the most desirable and admired sports cars ever made. Neither firm would be where they are now without the events of 1964, so it’s fitting they’ve joined forces to produce something that captures its significance. The Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a striking concept that marries icons of whisky and motoring. The bottle contains the 31 Year Old Black Bowmore liquid that was produced on that fabled first distillation; it’s presented in a genuine piston taken from under the hood of an Aston Martin DB5. Like the DB5 is for motorheads, the Black Bowmore is as elusive as it is exquisite is for its fans. Just 6,000 bottles of the single malt whisky have been made available since 1993, and this latest release is limited to

just 25 decanters. It has become hugely collectible not just for its rarity but for its sublimely rich and decadent flavor, which is reflected in its deep, dark complexion. Even with a $65,000 price tag, demand is expected to outstrip supply. “Arguably, Black Bowmore already has iconic status, particularly amongst whisky collectors around the world,” says distillery manager David Turner. “This incredible collaborative product further supports this position and shows the power of partnership in a new and innovative way. We hope that this release goes on to take its rightful place in the legacy we are building for Bowmore and defines the future of our partnership with Aston Martin.” The bottle itself is a fitting home for such an extraordinary liquid. Each one is handcrafted by experienced artisans at Glasstorm and takes up to a week to make. The presentation box is also a work of art. It has been created from the finest calfskin and features custom nickel-plated brass hinges that reflect the unique styling of the DB5. Both brands have agreed to follow strict Drink Smart® guidelines to ensure all promotional material avoids any link to drinking and driving. $65,000, bowmore.com

THE MACALLAN 72 IN LALIQUE The Macallan 72 Year Old is the oldest whisky ever released by the legendary distillery. Marking a huge moment in its illustrious history, The Macallan partnered with Lalique to create a bespoke decanter as special as the liquid it would hold. Its unique design was inspired by the distinctive architecture of The Macallan’s distillery with the decanter rising and falling in reflection of its roof line. themacallan.com

THE DALMORE L’ANIMA Master distiller Richard Paterson partnered with one of the world’s best chefs, Massimo Bottura, to create this one-of-a-kind whisky. The pair, both masters of their respective arts, combined expertise to create a liquid that celebrates flavors from Bottura’s three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana. The liquid is a marriage of extremely rare expressions taken from some of Dalmore’s most prized casks. The only bottle in existence was sold at auction and raised $141,000 for charity. thedalmore.com

DISCOVER MEN’S WATCHES

by Roberta Naas

Pre-pandemic, we were exploring all corners of the globe for both business and pleasure. This trend will go on after Covid-19, as we are all adventure seekers at heart. And to help us on our way, the luxury watch world has created world time watches that make travel easier. Visually alluring, they offer the time in the world’s 24 zones — some via a chapter ring with the cities listed on it; others use maps or three-dimensional world globes, or combinations thereof. The mechanical movements inside these timepieces are complex works of horology, often featuring 24-hour time and am/pm indicators. They’re clad in the noble metals or sporty stainless steel cases. Either way, these world timers help you view time anywhere on the globe at a glance. AROUND THE WORLD

The self-winding manufacture caliber L141.1 consists of an incredible 448 parts and 38 rubies, and offers 72 hours of power reserve. $56,100 in 18K yellow gold, A. ARNOLD & SON GLOBETROTTER NIGHT This highly unusual three-dimensional Globetrotter Night watch takes a totally different approach to world time indication. The center of the watch is a domed rotating globe with the continents on it. Behind it is a 24-hour disc used to set the time and locations — all from the crown at 3 o’clock. To set home time, the wearer pulls the crown out to its third position and finds his general location on the 3D globe — placing it as though there was a straight line passing through the dial. He then aligns the home location on the map with the correct local time on the 24-hour scale. Local time is similarly set (using the second position of the crown) and is read off of the red-lacquered hands against the outer Roman numeral ring. $17,000 in stainless steel, Cellini Jewelers in New York, +1 212 888 0505, arnoldandson.com VACHERON CONSTANTIN OVERSEAS WORLD TIME In typical Vacheron Constantin style, the venerable brand goes all out with its Overseas World Time watch — bringing together haute horology with artistic looks and features that are perfect for world travel. The watch is powered by a manufacture self-winding movement that offers 40 hours of power reserve and displays hours, minutes and seconds in the center, as well as day/night and 24-hour indication on outer chapter rings. The map depicts the Northern Hemisphere and is surrounded by the city list. The arrow on the bezel at 6 o’clock is the reference time-zone index. The 43.5mm watch is anti-magnetic and water resistant to 150 meters. A transparent sapphire caseback allows you to view the complicated 255-part movement. $34,500 in stainless steel, Vacheron Constantin in New York, +1 212 317 8964, vacheron-constantin.com

BREITLING AVIATOR 8 B35 Breitling has long been associated with the world of aviation, creating pilot watches and cockpit instruments in the mid-20th century. It continues this tradition but in a highly updated style. This Aviator 8 B35 Unitime watch offers world time via an independent hour hand that can be adjusted by the crown. The inner 24-hour ring indicates if it is day or night in the city of choice. The mechanical automatic caliber B35 is equipped with two spring barrels, so it offers more than 70 hours of power reserve. The dial is sunray silver and the caseback is transparent sapphire for viewing of the movement. $8,140 in stainless steel with leather strap, Breitling in New York, +1 855 999 1884, breitling.com FREDERIQUE CONSTANT CLASSIC WORLDTIMER MANUFACTURE Frederique Constant’s Classic Worldtimer watch is a favorite among collectors. DISCOVER WOMEN’S WATCHES

by Roberta Naas

Moonphase watches are one of the most romantic complications for women, but they’re also sophisticated. Moonphase indications depict the moon phases in real time using a small disc, typically painted or engraved with the stages of the moon’s rotation cycle. Through an aperture on the dial, the correct portion of the moon disc coinciding with the night sky is displayed. Those discs, or that display system, can be simple or complex. Simple ones are accurate for about two-and-a-half years, more advanced ones for up to 122 years. The typical real-life moonphase cycle is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. In most watches, this time is condensed to an average of 29.5 days —meaning that in a few years, the accuracy is affected and the watch needs an adjustment. Over the moon

PIAGET LIMELIGHT STELLA HIGH JEWELRY The master artisans at Piaget work wonders with this 39mm watch by setting the diamonds in graduated sizes to evoke a stunning oval look. The inner ring is mother-of-pearl, and the center of the dial boasts the complex moonphase indication — enhanced by a diamond baguette-cut motif. In total, the watch is set with more than 250 diamonds (9.40 carats of diamonds). The watch is powered by the brand’s in-house Caliber 580P self-winding movement with a high degree of precision, needing a day’s adjustment after 122 years. It is finished with a gray alligator strap. $252,000 in 18K white gold, Piaget in New York, +1 877 874 2438, piaget.com

JAEGER-LECOULTRE RENDEZ-VOUS MOON HIGH JEWELRY

Easily one of the most successful launches of a women’s collection in the 21st century, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Rendez- Vous continually delights women around the world. This high jewelry version is set with 301 blue sapphires that pave the center dial and moonphase indication. Behind the stylized numerals, diamond baguettes, outlined by round brilliants, provide a stunning backdrop for the time indication. The watch is powered by the in-house-made Caliber 935 self-winding movement that is designed to offer accurate moon phase indication for 122 years. $267,000 in white gold, Jaeger-LeCoultre in New York, +1 646 828 4328, jaeger-lecoultre.com BOVET R É CITAL 23 From Bovet, this stunning Récital 23 is the first Bovet women’s watch to be housed in the brand’s creative ‘writing slope’ case (inspired by the sloped writing desks of yesteryear). For the first time, though, it is in an oval shape rather than round. The dial at 6 o’clock is aventurine glass with 10 diamond indices, and the two hands form a heart shape once an hour when the hours and minutes overlap. The three-dimensional globe at 12 o’clock is engraved to reflect the moon’s surface and is filled with a luminescent material. The blue discs with stars rotate with the globe, and the moonphase is read via a circular aperture above the Bovet logo. The moon is accurate for 122 years before needing an adjustment. The watch is powered by a self-winding movement with 62 hours of power reserve. $103,000 in 18K 5N rose gold, Watches of Switzerland in Las Vegas, +1 702 792 0183, bovet.com

CHOPARD HAPPY MOON From a limited edition of just 250 pieces, this 36mm Chopard Happy Moon watch offers a lovely interpretation of the starlit skies via its exquisite aventurine glass dial with glittering inclusions. Chopard enhances the dial with gold threads and studs that trace the outlines of famed constellations in the Northern Hemisphere. The moonphase is so accurate that it will display only a one-day deviation from the path of the moon after 122 years. This is the first Happy Sport watch to boast an astronomical complication. It’s powered by a new in-house-made automatic movement with 65 hours of power reserve and is a COSC-certified chronometer. The seven free-floating diamonds are a signature of the Happy Diamonds series. $44,600 in 18K ethical rose gold, Chopard in New York, +1 212 223 2304, chopard.com HARRY WINSTON PREMIER MOON PHASE For those who prefer a quartz movement so they don’t have to worry about setting the time and moonphase if the mechanical watch sits still for a few days, Harry Winston’s Premier Moon Phase watch may be the answer. It is powered by a Swiss quartz movement and offers time, date and moonphase in the center of the decorative dial. The main dial is crafted of iridescent white mother-of-pearl and is set with diamond markers and diamond accents throughout. The center moonphase dial is blue mother-of- pearl with gold moon and intricate motif. In total the watch is set with 10 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 2.58 carats. $29,900 in 18K white gold, Harry Winston in New York, +1 800 988 4110, harrywinston.com
