Object of desire

Master spirit Thirty pounds of exquisite crystal and more than 20 remarkable artisans have come together to create one cherished cognac decanter to rule them all: the Louis XIII Le Salmanazar. This striking nine-liter bottle is the largest known crystal cognac decanter in the world and a beacon of French excellence, joining two revered maisons in a crystal masterpiece. The house of Rémy Martin has once again summoned Baccarat, the designer of the original Louis XIII decanter, which was inspired by a 16th-century flask discovered on an old battlefield at Jarnac. A Baccarat master sculptor worked fastidiously alongside skilled craftsmen to mold the iconic dentelle (lace) motif, fleur-de-lis stopper and triumphant medallion that adorn the towering vessel. Imposing yet delicate, the decanter contains the beloved cognac selected by the cellar master from the finest eaux-de-vie in the Grande Champagne region. Presented in an ornate display chest, the amber-colored cognac is accompanied by eight crystal glasses and a serving platter with spear. The tradition of drawing the spirit from the cask with a spear dates back to the celebratory tasting ritual performed by its original cellar master, which you can now recreate in your own wine cellar. Only through a private appointment at the Louis XIII boutique in Beijing can one lay eyes on Le Salmanazar. Inside the oak- walled Eternity Room, clients are immersed in cognac culture, experiencing expert-led tastings and food pairings as well as access to the complete collection of Louis XIII decanters and special editions. $450,000, available by appointment at Louis XIII La Boutique in SKP, Beijing. Watches Many watch brands claim to create in-house movements, but their definitions of in-house can vary widely. There are very few brands who manufacture nearly every component themselves, down to balance springs, and their technology is fiercely guarded. Elite Traveler headed to Switzerland to visit Bovet’s three manufactures and see for ourselves how these timepieces come together. At Manufacture Dimier 1738 in Fleurier, visitors can practically track a watch’s creation from start to finish, observing how the workshop mixes cutting-edge technology and traditional techniques. A floor dedicated to micromechanics is filled with enormous machines stamping out parts and creating just about every component in a watch movement. Some machines even make delicate pieces for other companies, including parts for hearing aids. It’s astonishing to see the raw power required to create these tiny components. At the upper floor in Dimier and also at Château de Môtiers, a 14th-century castle in Val-de-Travers that was at one time owned by a Bovet, you could hear a pin drop as artisans, artists and watchmakers decorate and assemble these timepieces. A step back in time

Château de Môtiers, the 14th-century castle that was once home to the Bovet family

Clockwise from left: The Château de Môtiers atelier; Virtuoso V; hand-engraving

Visiting the Château feels a bit like entering a time warp, almost as if you have stepped back in time to watchmaking’s roots in the 19th century and brought computers, lights and high-powered microscopes with you. Overlooking picturesque towns and impossibly green rolling hills, artisans work in light-flooded rooms hand-engraving, hand-polishing and assembling Bovet’s watches. At its dial manufacture, artisans decorate beautiful dials with guilloché, lacquer and enamel. All of this technology and savoir faire comes together every January when Bovet releases its novelties in Geneva. This year, it introduced a new Virtuoso V with an arresting dial. The front features a

white-gold case set with diamonds and a bright-blue lacquered guilloché dial with a swirling fan motif, jumping hour aperture and retrograde minutes. On the reverse side, there is subdial with hours and minutes in the same bright blue, and the rest of the dial is open to showcase the movement. It boasts a staggering five days of power reserve. It features the Amadeo convertible case, which can be transformed into a pocket watch, desk clock or pendant watch, as well as showcase the reverse dial. This combination of manufacturing power and incredible craftsmanship make this piece just that more special for collector. $79,800 in white gold with diamonds. Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox

BRAND PROFILE GRÖNEFELD

With familial roots in watchmaking that date back to 1912, the Grönefeld brothers, Bart and Tim, seem to be destined for horology. Before launching their own brand in the Netherlands with a tourbillon minute repeater, they honed their craft at technical schools, then at some of watchmaking’s most prestigious manufactures. Blending interesting and challenging horological concepts with impeccable finishings and decoration, they have garnered much praise in the industry and won some of its highest accolades. A small manufacture, it produced just 75 watches last year, 75 percent of which were bespoke, with clients selecting dial color, adding guilloché or creating art pieces. Contact Tim Grönefeld, co-founder, info@gronefeld.com, +31 620 624 673, gronefeld.com 1. One Hertz A large seconds subdial dominates

2. 1941 Remontoire Using the rare remontoire system, this watch has an eight-seconds constant- force mechanism, which means its timekeeping is accurate for the entire 35-hour power reserve. The brothers claim that this is the “most complicated time-only watch in the world,” and it was awarded the best men’s watch of 2016 at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Its beautifully decorated movement features relief engraving, mirror-polishing, micro- blasting and circular graining, which provide wonderful contrast. $61,500, limited to 188 movements 3. Parallax Tourbillon Another GPHG prize winner, this time in the tourbillon category in 2014, the Parallax Tourbillon showcases a large, raised, flying 60-second tourbillon. Pairing a tourbillon with a central second hand allows for more readability (frequently seconds are indicated on the tourbillon itself, which can be difficult to see). It also contains a mechanism to stop the tourbillon at 60 seconds, so you can accurately set the time. A large indicator tracks its impressive 72 hours of power reserve. $170,000 in pink gold, limited to 28 pieces the clean dial, highlighting the independent dead seconds (or jumping seconds), which are powered by a secondary gear train. Unlike a movement with sweeping seconds, here, the hand ‘jumps’ once every second. Hours and minutes are indicated on a smaller subdial. Instead of pulling out the crown to adjust or wind the watch, a push of the crown switches the watch from winding to setting the time, easily visible on the indicator at 3 o’clock. $91,500 in pink gold

Born in 1968, the original Memovox Polaris was designed in an era of great expeditions. The Space Race was at its peak; just a decade earlier, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to summit Mount Everest; and the US Navy reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench, which is the deepest known point in the seabed. Lionel Favre, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s current design director, thinks that his predecessors had this adventurous spirit in mind when creating the original Memovox Polaris, a watch for a man of action with wanderlust in his soul. This year, Jaeger- LeCoultre celebrates the 50th anniversary of the original Memovox Polaris with a new collection inspired by this sense of exploration. Favre describes the modern pieces as “a watch you can wear every day at every moment” with a focus on useful complications, joking that a minute repeater would not be very useful on a tennis court or on an expedition to the South Pole. The limited-edition Polaris Memovox takes specific design elements from the Memovox Polaris and incorporates the original’s cherished mechanical alarm. The central disc THE NEWPOLARIS

moves with a twist of the top crown, and the triangle indicates the time the alarm is set for. The other two crowns in the somewhat unusual three-crown design move the rotating inner bezel and set the time. Vanilla-colored Super-LumiNova indexes add a vintage look to the dial. For the modern traveler, there’s a titanium chronograph with world timer, which is easily adjusted with a crown at 10 o’clock. All of the models mix finishes on both the dial (sunray, grained and opaline) and on the case (hand-polished and brushed), lending an elegance to the sporty timepiece. Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph WT in titanium, $14,500, and Polaris Memovox, $12,600, both available online at jaeger-lecoultre.com

Men’s style A DOUBLE TAKE ON DOUBLE-BREASTED SUITS

Over the past few years, the double-breasted suit has gone through a bit of a resurgence. It’s a classic silhouette that has never really gone out of style per se, but it has certainly dipped in and out of favor among certain trend circles. The cut can seem a little intimidating, and there may be some uncertainty on how or when to wear it. Let’s begin to demystify that, because based on the spring 2018 collections, the silhouette is not going anywhere anytime soon. Just like their single-breasted brethren, double-breasted suits can be worn in a variety of settings. A traditional suit from Ring Jacket is constructed with ‘Mohair Solaro,’ a wool-mohair blend developed exclusively for the brand. The medium-weight fabric lends itself to three-season garments that can be worn to the office or other formal environments. If you think the double-breasted suit has an old and stodgy vibe, Savile Row tailor Richard James will help change your mind. His collection took inspiration from abstract artist Ellsworth Kelly. And using a color palette that includes a dusty pink, James certainly injects a youthful spirit into his

tailoring, taking the suit outside the confines of the office and out on the town. Neapolitan clothier Kiton’s slim-fitting double-breasted suit also exudes a distinct freshness. Crafted in the lightweight and rare 14-micron wool, the suit reflects the label’s discerning taste. At Ermenegildo Zegna Couture, the silhouette was markedly more relaxed, some might even say sporty. A loose-fitting double-breasted suit was paired with a scoop-neck knit shirt, goggles and low-top sneakers, in line with the whole collection’s casual and airy quality. Artistic director Alessandro Sartori’s deconstructed looks were nonchalant yet still refined. This season, Stefano Ricci, the Florence-based luxury brand, was inspired by the rich history of the southern Italian city of Matera, the third-oldest continuously inhabited human settlement (after Jericho and Aleppo), famed for its ancient Unesco-protected mountainside cave dwellings. One highlight from the impeccable Stefano Ricci collection shown at Matera is a double- breasted suit in a deep Mediterranean blue.

Getting to know Simon Spurr

In January, Eidos, a stand-alone brand of Italian tailor Isaia, debuted its first collection by new creative director Simon Spurr in Milan. Spurr previously worked at Saint Laurent with Hedi Slimane, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, as well as for his eponymous label and his own footwear brand, March NYC. Speaking to Elite Traveler , Spurr says his debut collection takes inspiration from the sabbatical he took before joining the company. “Sometimes it is important to gain perspective, and I was extremely fortunate to have an extended period of time off, outside of the fashion industry, where I immersed myself in other disciplines, such as furniture, art, sculpture and interiors.” American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt’s art is featured in the collection — Spurr was directly influenced by two wall drawings, pictured here. He explains, “My fascination goes beyond their obvious beauty and technical mastery. It’s LeWitt’s use of mathematics in creating these pieces, and the fact that he has made the actual wall the piece of art, that intrigued me. Much of my work as a designer has also been mathematical, perfecting the fit of a garment or looking at the negative space in the composition of an image. But my self-imposed challenge this season was to also design each item in the collection with the same consideration and attention as LeWitt demonstrated in his wall drawings — in effect, to make wearable pieces of art through the subtlety of detail.” eidosnapoli.com

Logomania

Considering fashion’s current obsession with everything 1990s, it’s only natural that logomania has returned. Throughout the spring collections, logos were splashed across every item of clothing imaginable, as well as accessories. While we haven’t quite hit the ’90s peak of head-to-toe logos, there’s no harm in wearing an exuberant printed coat to shake off the winter blues. At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld showed three decadent logo-printed fur coats, taking the trend to the next level of luxury. The man who perhaps started the revival, Alessandro Michele at Gucci, showed logos throughout his show. The Gucci name and interlocking Gs were on skirts, varsity sweaters, every accessory and a surprisingly elegant blue-and-yellow coat. As part of Gucci’s new fur-free initiative, it will be produced without the fur cuffs shown. Forget rock crystal’s costume-jewelry reputation. Recently, designers have been using the clear stone to showcase important gems in their high-jewelry lines, sometimes even letting it take center stage. Winter and whimsy feature heavily in these collections. Rock crystal’s transparency complements winter-inspired pieces, such as in Boucheron’s range that explores frigid landscapes in Imperial Russia. Sensational pieces fit for a czarina fill the collection, with rock crystal serving as a base for incredible diamonds and blue gemstones. The pictured ring, an homage to a snowball, has a large sphere of rock crystal set with diamonds. London-based House of Garrard’s Enchanted Palace collection looks back to the setting of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Crystal Palace, which was constructed with 300,000 sheets of glass. The spinning-pendant necklace features rock crystal studded with diamonds on one side and blue sapphires on the other. David Webb works frequently with rock crystal, carving it into exquisite shapes in the Twilight line. The fluted White Night cuff has timeless Art Deco elegance. H Stern transforms Rua das Pedras, a cobblestone street in Búzios, Brazil, into a collection of rock-crystal pieces featuring different shapes and cuts to represent the irregular stones on the ancient path. Both Bulgari and Chopard surrounded large stones with rock crystal. At Chopard, a 6.88-carat emerald sits in the center of rock- crystal petals, while Bulgari features two sapphires in a pair of earrings.

BEADED BEAUTIES

There’s something sensual about draping oneself in beads of precious gems, which is perhaps why beaded jewelry is having a resurgence in recent collections. From high-jewelry line Chaumet Est une Fête comes a stunning suite: Aria Passionata. Drawing on the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan, whose stage and boxes are draped in sumptuous red fabric with gold accents, the necklace’s trailing beads evoke curtains closed just before the opera begins. A mix of garnets, rubies and tourmalines with black onyx and pink-gold beads brings depth and passion to the pieces. At Coomi, the Sagrada collection juxtaposes beads, gemstones, diamonds and recycled gold to celebrate diversity. The line’s black onyx and diamond necklace is a prime example of the brand’s unique vision. It wouldn’t be a bead story without Shamballa Jewels, known for its infinitely customizable bracelets and necklaces that allow you to pick each bead, whether it’s a faceted diamond, pavé bead, precious metal or semiprecious gem.

Placing the focus squarely on color are Bayco and Roberto Coin. Bayco’s tassel earrings feature dozens of natural, unheated sapphire beads cascading from diamonds and cabochon sapphires. Roberto Coin’s twisted necklace comprises a

staggering 890 carats of emerald beads accentuated by diamonds at the end of each strand.

Dr Gross uses SculpSure in his practice — a laser treatment that permanently destroys fat cells, recently introducing a neck and chin treatment

The new Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir is La Prairie’s most powerful product

Spotlight: Dr Dennis Gross

At 71st Street and Fifth Avenue, just opposite Central Park, is one of New York’s most fashionable clubs: the clinic of board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon Dennis Gross. Celebrities, models and socialites are frequent sights in his Zen-like office. They come to the “king of peels” for his state-of-the-art technology, which focuses on achieving results while minimizing recovery. A pioneer in peels that decrease hyperpigmentation and improve radiance and skin tone, Dr Gross uses both chemical and retinol peels and developed an acclaimed line of home skin care. He is very discerning about which treatments he brings into his practice, explaining, “until tested, you never know that it delivers results.” Dr Gross recently introduced SculpSure to his practice, a process that permanently destroys fat cells by using a high-temperature laser to send heat deep into fat layers. The 25-minute procedure allows clients to target problem areas that just won’t budge despite diet and exercise (common areas include stomach, hips, love handles, upper arms and around bra lines). Expect to have one to three treatments per area and to see full results after 12 weeks. Dr Gross chose SculpSure over other body-contouring procedures because he truly believes in the science, it allows him to “customize and tweak the exact amount of fat reduction,” and the heat helps the skin look better, giving it a smooth appearance. MIDNIGHT MAGIC

“Newborn skin by morning” is a pretty bold claim for a beauty company to make about one of its products, but according to La Prairie, the new Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir is the most powerful formula it has ever released, and it will make you feel as if your skin has become rejuvenated overnight. Combining two proprietary La Prairie complexes in their highest concentrations in any product, the serumworks during sleep, when many of the body’s repair mechanisms are most active, to improve skin’s texture and firmness, as well as reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The ingredients are targeted to improve four of the skin’s most vital functions: the Exclusive Cellular Complex promotes cell renewal; and the Advanced PlatinumComplex encourages cellular respiration and repair, detoxifies the skin to improve tone and enhance radiance, and boosts the skin’s immunity, making it less sensitive to environmental stressors. Additionally, platinum peptide stimulates collagen production, and vitamin C works to reduce age spots and improve skin tone. Applied only at night, a single drop of the lightly floral-scented serum is all that is needed. Upon application, the color turns from platinum to an iridescent rose. The decanter makes a glamorous addition to your vanity: inside a clear cylinder sits a purple jewel-shaped vial holding the serum, which is dispensed using a dropper. Finish your skin-care routine with the Platinum eye serum and cream, or try another of La Prairie’s new releases, White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire, which brightens, evens out skin tone and targets dark spots. For a decadent treatment, head to a La Prairie Spa for the Ultimate Platinum Rare Facial, which uses the exclusive Platinum range, including the new elixir. PlatinumRare Cellular Night Elixir, $1,200 for 20ml, White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire, $695 for 60ml, both available online at laprairie.com.
