INSPIRE ISLAND RESORTS
Ponta dos Ganchos BRAZIL 8
The name Ponta dos Ganchos means “tip of the hook”, which tells you that this exclusive hotel isn’t actually on an island, but on a peninsula, separated from the Brazilian mainland (45km north of Florianopolis) by such a slim isthmus that the effect is as if it’s floating off the coast. Only hotel guests can enter the area and the vibe is Crusoe-esque rather than Brazilian party – a sumptuous spot in which to switch off and be at one with nature. Standout service Outdoor wilderness concerts for guests, which take place in a secluded clearing, are unsual and uplifting. The 10-course tasting breakfast from chef Luis Salvajoli is a must-try. There's hiking, dolphin spotting and local cultural trips, though most guests tend to just arrive and embrace the relaxation. Special amenities Private helipad, private drivers, dinners on the resort’s mini island (reached by a rope bridge), arrival by boat and a floating dock with lounge chairs to which guests can swim, kayak, or paddleboard. Number of rooms 25 villas in five categories. Room to book The Special Emerald Villa (2,460 sq ft) with its own sauna, spa area, Jacuzzi, infinity pool and wine cellar. The resort also has an underground gym for fitness fanatics. Who’s slept there Beyoncé and Paul McCartney among many. Contact Managing director, Julio Jost (+55 48 3262 5000; julioj@pontadosganchos.com.br); pontadosganchos.com.br Price From $572 per villa per day.
Tagomago SPAIN 9
This tiny rocky outcrop 900 meters off Ibiza has plenty of the White Isle magic without any of the drawbacks. With just one large mansion on the site, you have to take the island – which includes your own beach bar and lighthouse – in its entirety. Some guests choose to explore the walking paths that criss-cross the island; others go for something more debauched. Either way, the high level of privacy explains why it’s popular with celebrities looking to escape prying eyes. Standout service A staff ratio of nearly 1:1, and an anything goes attitude – past requests have included a private T’ai Chi instructor and an in-house disco with one of Ibiza’s best DJs. Special amenities A selection of “toys”, including a Mangusta 108 yacht (from $6,795 a day) and a helicopter are at guests’ disposal. There’s a mooring for those with their own yacht. Number of rooms Five doubles, all with sleek, contemporary style. Room to book The red bedroom (538 sq ft) has the best views over the pool, lighthouse and to Ibiza. Who’s slept there Cristiano Ronaldo; RonnieWood; Jade Jagger. Contact Christina Moehlmann (+34 691 858 553, cm@kuhn- partner.com); island-tagomago.com. Price Whole island from $123,000 per week (min three-nights).
