Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary is a significant milestone, even for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Founded in 1839, it remains the quintessential haute horology brand, its signature designs highly coveted by collectors. Last November it broke its own auction record for the world’s most expensive watch, when the Henry Graves Supercomplication sold for $24m at Sotheby’s. Patek’s president, Thierry Stern, attributes this success in part to its independence. Being one of the few remaining family owned manufacturers, he says, allows it to continually push new limits when it comes to innovation. To mark its anniversary, Patek has introduced nine commemorative, limited-edition timepieces referencing historic models. While the flagship is the Grandmaster Chime, with 20 complications, gold accents and hand- guilloched center, the white gold World Time Moon represents the course of this unique company’s history. Louis Moinet was an 19th-century horologist who invented the chronograph (or compteur de tierces as he called it) in 1815. His legacy and enthusiasm have been revived by Jean-Marie Schaller, founder and creative director of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet in Saint-Blaise, Switzerland. Bare-faced chic Haute watchmakers are showing off their assets like never before. The skeleton trend, where some or all of the watch-face is removed to reveal the beating, bejeweled heart of the timepiece beneath, is back with a vengeance. In truth it has never really gone away, rather the line between what can and cannot be exposed without compromising the horological engineering has grown ever more imperceptible. SPIRIT OF THE TORNADO The Venom F5 is the latest jaw-dropper from Texan supercar firm Hennessey. The replacement for the GT, it hits the roads later this year and takes its name from the top of the scale used to measure tornados. This tie-up between high-end British gunsmiths Holland & Holland and Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations is a definite hit. Only 40 of the $280,000 special edition Range Rovers will be built each year. Based on the top-of-the-range, long-wheelbase Autobiography Black model, the vehicle makes use of the extra leg room, with two individual seats in the rear that recline to 17 degrees, and an extended centre console with integrated USB sockets and bespoke lighting. To many followers of fashion, the chicest designer labels at the moment whisper instead of scream. Designers such as Joseph Altuzarra, Anthony Vaccarello, and Tomas Maier are creating clothing that is quietly luxurious, focusing on beautifully fluid fabrics in (updated) classic silhouettes. Dubbed by some as “stealth wealth” fashion, these easy-to-wear pieces elicit an insiders’ nod of recognition instead of explicitly boasting brand affiliations and the corresponding price tag. “It’s a style that comes through in not overdoing it – that’s the soul of it,” observes Sasha Sarokin, buying manager for Net-A-Porter. “It’s an effortlessness, an understatedness. A woman can look chic in this style as opposed to wearing statement pieces.” The influential website is carrying Vaccarello for the first time this spring, and is feeling confident about Maier’s mix for resort and spring collection of button-downs and breezy skirts and dresses. There is a versatility to these clothes, which often come in neutral colors such as tan, dark brown, and navy. Sheherazade Goldsmith’s inspiration for her line of transparent, customizable gold lockets came from an inexpensive perspex necklace, bought at an amusement park by her then nine-year-old son. “I wore it all the time and thought, ‘wouldn’t it be nice to open it and put something inside’,” she says.
