Welcome

In the oft-quoted words of Hans Christian Andersen: “to roam the roads of lands remote, to travel is to live.” While it is hard to pin down the exact date of this quote, it is a mantra that transcends time — and one that we can certainly agree

Elite Traveler around the world For daily updates, follow us on Twitter @elite_traveler and on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest @elitetraveler

with here at Elite Traveler . In this issue, our annual Hotels, Resorts & Spas edition, we bring all that is fresh and exciting in the world of luxury travel, from modern new openings to reimaginings of historic buildings and everything in between. You’ll fi nd our expert, in-depth reviews on some of the world’s fi nest hotels categorized by location. In the Maldives, The Nautilus provides a seriously secluded getaway; the resort is located in the Baa Atoll, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, and has just 26 beach and ocean houses (or you can take over the entire island if you wish). For a completely di ff erent vibe, head to The Tawny. A new opening in the heart of rural Sta ff ordshire (around three hours from London), the hotel sits inside Consall Hall Estate, a 70-acre plot with a history that dates back to the 13th century. If you’re more of a seafarer, one of the world’s most exclusive — and most elusive — superyachts is available for charter. Octopus , the 414-ft megayacht that was owned by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is available for charter for the fi rst time since her launch in 2003. With an ice-class hull, two helipads, a huge toy list including seven tenders and electric foils, the Espen Øino-designed Octopus facilitates adventure and tons of fun. In this issue, we’re also shining a spotlight on a few of life’s other great pleasures: Alex Martin waxes lyrical about the top-notch distilleries found in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Emma Al-Mousawi speaks to four young chefs about their non-negotiable approaches to sustainability — each one of these celebrated chefs is under the age of 35 and at the helm of kitchens that have earned Michelin Green Stars. While a bottle of wine is always a good idea for a gift, Victoria Daskal thinks outside the box with the wine lover’s wish list — a curation of goodies from glassware that ampli fi es the wines’ aromas to a serum that incorporates grapeseed oil from Napa grapes.

Alex Martin heads to the British countryside to visit The Tawny with his family.

Samantha Coles enjoys a bird’s-eye view of The Nautilus Maldives via the resort’s cushy seaplane.

Air Charter Service has created incredible itineraries

by Svetlana Nartey Iceland’s dramatic landscape Aviation

All ends of the world Air Charter Service (ACS) has curated novel private-jet itineraries to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful destinations as part of its ‘Time Well Spent’ series. Meticulously designed using James Wallman’s futurist theory on the utilization of time, these itineraries cut total travel time by 80% to procure abundantly adventurous travel experiences — all within two weeks. Venture to the ‘Top of the World’ as you soar through Nordic landscapes, or ‘Journey to the End of the World’ through South America

ACROSS THE TOP OF THE WORLD Best undertaken in August due to favorable weather conditions, the ‘Top of The World’ itinerary showcases superlative Nordic scenery. Starting in the Norwegian Lofoten Islands, fl y through a fairy tale as you pass shimmering seas, fuzzy mountains and spiky precipices before landing on a white-sand beach. Stay at a family-owned luxury hotel comprised of former fi shermen’s cabins for an insight into Norway’s seascape, and feast on the freshest seafood. You can also boat to Trollfjorden for a barbecue lunch, then return to the Holmen Lofoten for a lesson in traditional Viking knife-making. The next destination, the Faroe Islands, has some of the steepest cli ff s on Earth. Rappel 80 ft down a sheer cli ff while the ocean laps at your feet. Fishing, hiking and boating also await, as well as a reservation at one of the world’s most remote two-Michelin-star restaurants, KOKS. You’ll stay at Hotel Føroyar, a glass-roofed celebrity favorite. A day trip to Iceland yields volcanic views. Depending on weather conditions, you can witness fi ery lava spewing out of Mount Fagradalsfjall, or hike to the crater of a dormant volcano, then descend inside it. Venture on toWestman Islands, known as the ‘Pompeii of the North’ after an abrupt 1973 volcanic explosion

submerged its main isle. Learn more about this natural disaster at the Eldheimar Museum and hike up one of the volcano’s formations, Fire Mountain. Three days in Greenland are enough to cement its unforgettable landscape in your mind. During your stay at the tented Camp Kiattua, you can inhabit a real igloo, soak in steamy hot tubs, and wrap up in sheepskins and furs beside a crackling fi re. With landscapes of 3.8-billion-year-old mountains, 800-year-old Viking ruins, rocky cli ff s and shimmering waterfalls to explore, Greenland is not short on beauty or history. Svalbard, the penultimate destination, possesses

gargantuan landscapes and awe-inspiring wildlife. Board a RIB boat and zip up the fjords to discover Arctic wildlife, and top o ff your stay at the foot of a ginormous glacier at Nordenskiöld Lodge. There, you can hike and see stunning views of Adolfbukta and Billefjorden before cruising across the bay of Adolfbukta to a Soviet ghost town named Pyramiden. The fi nal two days of this adventure will be spent in Finnish Lapland. Stay at Octola Private Wilderness, a remote, 10-bedroom luxury chalet set among 740 acres of lush private forest. Horseback ride to a reindeer farm and spend your days spotting elk, wolverine and birds.

Look out for wildlife

Spend three days in Greenland

Below Easter Island

JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE WORLD Available year-round, the ‘End of the Word’ itinerary explores the best of South America. Starting in Santiago, enjoy neoclassical views, leafy trees and the snow-capped Andes before fl ying to Calama. A mountainous upland awaits at San Pedro de Atacama, and sunset skies can be savored in the Valley of the Moon. Indulge your newly formed thirst for night-sky viewing at Explora Atacama luxury retreat; the private observatory a ff ords magni fi cent views of the Milky Way. At sunrise, visit the Tatio Geysers, where you’ll fi nd some of the world’s tallest bursting geysers. Find calmer waters at the Puritama Hot Springs, and cycle or hike in the area before departing to Easter Island. You’ll be met by the destination’s nearly 1,000 famous monolithic Moai statues. The origin of these sculptures, carved by the early Rapa Nui people at least 500 years ago, still fascinates scientists. Next up, at Pucón in Chile’s Lake District, check into &Beyond Vira Vira, situated on a 34-acre organic farm. Trek up Villarrica, one of Chile’s most active volcanoes and part of the Paci fi c Ring of Fire. As you stand 9,300 ft above sea level atop Villarrica, whether you look up to the clouds or down into its hellish volcanic crater, the horizon is the limit. Visit the nearby hot springs and enjoy a thrilling raft ride on the Trancura River before a delicious meal with a local Mapuche family. Paddleboarding is also on o ff er in addition to sighting skipping trout and salmon in the crystal-clear Liucura River below. As you depart Temuco, see the Andes Mountains and Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego (aka ‘End of the World’) from your jet window on your way to a stay in the sustainably built Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa. A private boat trip on Beagle Canal provides views of both the Argentinian and Chilean coasts, with stops at Isla de Lobos and Martillo Island — look out for Magellanic and Gentoo penguins. You’ll stay at

Explora Torres del Paine in the heart of Chilean Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park. You will even get to meet American conservationist Kristine Tomkins, former CEO of the Patagonia clothing brand and co-founder of Tompkins Conservation. As you circle back to Santiago, you’ll stay at Vik Chile, one of Chile’s most luxurious hotels. Sip on Chile’s fi nest wines and amuse yourself with the artistry of the architecture within this renowned resort’s individually designed rooms. On the fi nal days of your adventure, discover the world’s largest Salt Flat in Uyuni, Bolivia, spend two nights at the futuristic eco-pods at Kachi Lodge, and sleep under starry skies. Octopus has a host of wellness facilities including a swimming pool and gym

The onboard observation lounge with a glass bottom

Set sail with Octopus The ocean holds volumes of mystery that await uncovering, and there’s no better way to explore than on board one of the largest yet most elusive superyachts in the world: the late Paul Allen’s Octopus

On board Octopus , guests can tread the same ground as oceanographic explorers who utilized the ship to search for shipwrecks and maritime artifacts. With the yacht’s new owner keen to continue her legacy of discovery, guests can spy ocean views in the observation lounge, examine marine life through a glass-bottomed aquarium, and delve into a fully equipped dive center before retreating to a therapeutic hyperbaric chamber.

Owned by the late Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, Octopus is a 414-ft megayacht that is available for charter for the fi rst time since her launch in 2003. Though renowned as one of the largest superyachts in the world, up until her sale in 2021 she had remained exclusively private, with few images of her interior ever shown to the public. Since joining the Camper & Nicholsons charter fl eet in 2021, Octopus has accommodated guests for a two-year global voyage tour that began in January 2021 and is due home in late February 2023. The tour includes stops in various regions within Central America (including Costa Rica), Fiji, Mexico’s West Coast, and the Solomon and Marquesas Islands, with Antarctica topping o ff the journey at its end. With an ice-class hull, two helipads, a huge toy list including seven tenders and electric foils, the Espen Øino-designed Octopus facilitates adventure from land to sea. In 2023 further adventures await aboard this limitless yacht as she will venture into the Mediterranean and be available for charter from late May 2023 (until she undergoes her 20-year survey in October).

Octopus further invigorates the body with an onboard swimming pool, gym and wellness area, while a cinema, DJ station, piano and library are available to stimulate the senses. Not forgetting taste, Octopus enhances the serene sensuality of her environment with a plentiful food o ff ering that includes extensive dining options and multiple poolside bars — all with tranquil ocean views. Octopus houses up to 12 guests across her three spacious decks, and her inventive interior design, by celebrated superyacht designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett, creates a convivial atmosphere perfect for enjoying quality time with family and friends. The luminously open-plan master suite features an observation deck and hot tub, and additional lodging includes two VIP apartments, seven double bedrooms and three twin staterooms. Each room, colored by the spines of extensive book collections, is sensibly furnished and decorated with carefully curated art. Charter from $2.2m per week. Ardbeg Cottage in Islay has glorious ocean views

Spirits

DAY 1 Begin your adventure in Oban. A gateway to the Hebrides, the fishing town was built around its eponymous distillery, which opened in 1794. The distillery is now locked into the town center, unable to expand, which has limited production but kept quality high. Tours are available in summer months, but a visit to the distillery shop will suffice. You’ll need plenty of time to sail from the mainland to Port Ellen in Islay’s south. DAY 2 With nine in operation, Islay has almost one whisky distillery for every 300 inhabitants. If you want to explore them in detail, it is best to base yourself on land. Travel north to The Machrie Hotel ( campbellgrayhotels.com ), where you’ll find beautifully designed suites and a historic links golf course. Then, head to the hotel’s impressive restaurant, 18, to The whisky world is your oyster. Most will head for the big-name distilleries, so opt for one of the craft producers. Kilchoman ( kilchomandistillery.com ) is the island’s only independent farm distillery and prides itself on producing whisky that is made from 100% Islay produce. Established in 2005, it has already gained a cult status. Alternatively (or additionally), head north to Bunnahabhain ( bunnahabhain.com ), an Islay distillery that stands alone for its unpeated style. Its Ultimate Bunnahabhain Tasting experience, which includes a dram of its oldest and rarest whisky, is a must. sample seasonal local produce such as Port Askaig lobster and Gigha halibut. DAY 3

DAY 4 For your final night on Islay, go fully immersive. Ardbeg ( ardbeg.com ) offers on-site accommodation in the form of a quaint cottage once home to the distillery manager. Experience the distillery through its Warehouse 3 Tasting Experience before retiring to your cozy abode just steps away. Wake up to wonderful ocean views and, on a clear day, you might even see your next destination on the horizon. DAY 5 A short sail away, Campbeltown is connected to the mainland but lies deep on the Kintyre Peninsula, so most visitors arrive by boat. Many come for one reason: Springbank ( springbank.scot ). Touted as ‘The Macallan of the West’ for its growing collectibility, Springbank recently closed its membership club to new applicants due to excessive demand. It’s increasingly hard to find a bottle online, so be sure to bring a spare bag to stock up in the distillery shop. Springbank’s Barley to Bottle Tour also gives you the chance to create your own Springbank blend from a variety of single malts. DAY 6-7 Enjoy the scenic sail back to central Scotland, passing the mountainous Isle of Arran before disembarking in Troon. Golf enthusiasts should take the chance to play a round at Royal Troon ( royaltroon.co.uk ), one of the world’s most famous courses, to bring the trip to an iconic end.

SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE The Inner Hebrides are home to some of the best whisky distilleries in the world, but just a tiny fraction of enthusiasts make the pilgrimage there. It’s easy to see why. A reputation for choppy seas and indecipherable ferry timetables keeps these storied isles reserved for the determined. Despite whisky’s growing popularity, places such as Islay remain uncompromisingly authentic. Bypass complex logistics with a private yacht and cut your own path through a unique part of the world. Set sail close to the summer solstice and enjoy long days, stunning sunsets and plenty of rare drams along the way.

From top Kilchoman is Islay’s only independent farm distillery; The Machrie Hotel has a historic links golf course

Wine by Victoria Daskal

Wine lover’s wish list While a good bottle of wine is always a solid gift idea, these wine-centric goodies are a step outside the box and enhance the wine-lover’s experience no end, from glassware that ampli fi es the wines’ aromas to a serum that incorporates grape-seed oil from Napa grapes

2. VINTNER’S DAUGHTER ACTIVE BOTANICAL SERUM April Gargiulo created Active Botanical Serum by drawing on her experience growing up in a Napa Valley winemaking family. She appreciated that true luxury starts with the best quality ingredients — Vintner’s Daughter’s face oil is formulated with 22 of the world’s most nutrient-rich botanicals for a nourishing and restorative moisturizer. Some of the botanicals are the same cover crops that grow in her family vineyards, such as alfalfa and dandelion, with the addition of grape-seed oil from Napa grapes. “It is the base of your skincare routine, which also eliminates the need to consume endless products,” says Gargiulo, who launched Vintner’s Daughter after becoming a mother and realizing how so many seemingly luxury products are not actually clean or sustainably produced. $185 for 30ml, vintnersdaughter.com 3. JOSEPHINENHÜTTE GLASSWARE A new glassware range created by sixth generation glass designer, Kurt Josef Zalto (of the world-famous Zalto range), is inspired by the history and craftsmanship of a Silesian glassworks in the Sudeten Mountains, founded in 1842 by Count Leopold von Scha ff gotsch and named after his beloved wife Josephine. The glasses are exceptionally light and thin-walled, astoundingly elastic and delicate — yet mercifully robust. Each fi ligree glass is a unique mouth-blown work of art. Their unusual shape ampli fi es the wine’s aromas as the swirling action is broken by the extra curve in the glass, absorbing more oxygen into the wine and releasing the most nuanced notes with each swirl. From $74 per glass, josephinen.com

1. CODE38 P-TYPE PROWINE KEY A world away from a cheap waiter’s corkscrew, the Code38 is a professional wine key dedicated to both wine service and serious wine connoisseurs. It was designed by passionate wine lover and aircraft engineer Je ff Toering, who, after years of research, discovered the slightly obscure process of metal injection molding (MIM) normally reserved for Swiss watch, aerospace and prestige car component manufacture, and used it to create the Code38 wine key. It’s much loved by sommeliers around the world; when uncorking hundreds of bottles in one service they appreciate a high-functioning tool that results in less cork breakage and fewer wrist injuries. UK distributor Daniel Primack explained that the brilliance in the design lies in its perfect angles, “speci fi cally between the lever and the helix, it maintains a vertical force as the cork is pulled.” Toering assures the Code38 is elegant and intuitive to use, “and has a longer shelf life than the most lovingly cellared cab sav.” From $365, code38.com

4. RUINART & DAVID SHRIGLEY LIMITED EDITION SECOND SKIN Ruinart is the fi rst Champagne house to forgo the traditional single bottle gift box in favor of something more sustainable. The revolutionary second skin case is molded to the curves of the bottle — an elegant, functional and fully recyclable alternative to the traditional gift box. This eco-designed casing marries the signature silhouette of the Maison’s curved bottle with its commitment to sustainable development. Where a big gift box made sense in the past, an entirely recyclable cloak composed of 99% natural wood fi bers is a more suitable fi t today. The sustainable innovation of the second skin case extols a return to nature and to the natural: It aims to reduce waste and recycle materials without diminishing the experience or taste. British contemporary artist, David Shrigley, has created two reinterpretations of the classic Ruinart label that will be featured on a limited edition version of the new eco-designed second skin cases of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Ruinart Rosé. These creations are representative of Shrigley’s unique vision. $92, clos19.com

FOUR YOUNG CHEFS GOING GREEN

Many gastronomy trends are fleeting but, thankfully, sustainability isn’t one of them. This was cemented in 2020 with the arrival of the Michelin Guide’s Green Star, an accolade that celebrates restaurants at the forefront of sustainable practices. While a select group of the world’s preeminent chefs have been leading the change over the past decade, they have recently been joined by a new generation of trailblazers, uncompromising in their quest to deliver world-beating cuisine that is kinder to the planet. Elite Traveler met four of the most exciting and eco-conscious chefs — all under the age of 35 and all of whom helm kitchens that have earned Green Michelin Stars — to uncover their non-negotiable approach to sustainability.

THE LOCAL HERO Matthew Kammerer, executive chef at two-Michelin-star Harbor House perched on California’s Mendocino coastline, shares his passion for hyper-local ingredients. “90% of our produce comes from local sources. The vision of Harbor House is to be a singular experience that you cannot fi nd anywhere else. This is due to our remote location and an abundance of high-quality local ingredients. We operate a 320-acre ranch where we raise 18 head of cattle that are 100% grass-fed and watered from an on-site spring. We also have a farm site where we grow the vegetables, fruit, and herbs, watered from an on-site spring. Being surrounded by coastal pine, in the fall and winter the ranch turns into a porcini mushroom paradise, which is featured on our menu. As the seasons change, our ability to forage all di ff erent types of ingredients changes with it. When we harvest something the day it is served, the quality will always be better than if it spends time on a plane or truck. THE ZERO-WASTE PIONEER Douglas McMaster, chef and owner at Silo in London — largely heralded as the UK’s fi rst zero-waste restaurant — tells us why fi ne dining and a no-waste approach go hand-in-hand. “Fine dining is de fi ned by our imaginations; what constitutes a fi ne dining experience is not set in stone. With that in mind, I’d like to imagine ‘ fi ne dining’ that has the health of the planet as an obligation. Nothing should be classed as fi ne dining if it’s predicated on the demise of nature. At Silo, we have achieved this through design. This started 10 years ago with the artist Joost Bakker; he created a unique juxtaposition of art and waste in a project called Greenhouse by Joost . This project was a spectacular display of creativity, innovation and beauty. The thought of being ethical and righteous can be a turno ff , but seeing it done with such sophistication changed the game: I knew this was the future of food. This desirability is what sets Silo apart from other sustainable restaurants; we would have failed if our product wasn’t great. Making a good product that people want to enjoy is the priority because these values count for nothing if no one comes in — it’s a waste, if you’ll

THE VEGGIE VANGUARD Gary Yin, executive head chef at three-Michelin-star vegetarian restaurant King’s Joy in Beijing, explains the roots of his plant-based culinary philosophy. “There is an old Chinese proverb that says ‘Food is at the center of the people.’ I’m committed to bringing together the best in both Eastern and Western vegetarian culinary arts. I do this through putting on the table the best natural ingredients from around the world, using only raw materials that meet or exceed our stringent selection criteria, and pledging to use only 100% fresh, naturally grown or wild ingredients. I combine this with the principles of using di ff erent produce within the 24 seasons of the Chinese calendar. Being a sustainable way of life in itself, vegetarianism is part of a movement that is essential in a sustainable future. It is our responsibility to keep our world habitable and safe for future generations, and actions must be taken now to a ff ect positive change.” guide.michelin.com

Michelin-starred Signum, located on the Aeolian island of Salina north of Sicily, shares how the island’s heritage and produce act as her inspiration. “My cuisine is a mix of tradition and innovation. I use the treasures of my island, from the sea to the mountains. Whenever I have time, I collect herbs that grow wild around Salina to use in my dishes. The island is a source of inspiration; the colors and scents that follow one another throughout the day become the basis of my creations. For me, sustainability is a care and respect of the raw material because behind every single ingredient — a tomato harvested in the fi elds, a fi sh — there is a person who struggles to produce it with their daily work. The respect continues in the cooking of the ingredients and fi nally in the presentation of the dish. Of all my dishes, the most signi fi cant from this point of view is the barbecued moray. The moray, which is eaten by the families of fi shermen, is usually thrown back into the sea because it is di ffi cult to cook and complicated to propose to the customers of a restaurant. We have been able to enhance this fi sh, bringing to the menu a dish of Aeolian tradition.” hotelsignum.it

MILAN The heart of luxury fashion and the home of some truly impressive art and architecture, Milan has it all. There’s something for everyone here: high-end boutiques, iconic buildings, unbeatable cuisine (gelato quickly becomes a daily ritual), gorgeous canals and green spaces for those looking for a bit of respite. Travelers often assume that Italy is warm year-round, but it can get surprisingly chilly in the winter, when Christmas markets and magni fi cent churches come to life. Summers can be very hot, and the busiest time for tourists to visit is in the spring, when the weather is pleasantly mild. Whatever the season, a long weekend is all you need to explore Milan, so read on for Elite Traveler ’s all-encompassing guide on where to stay, what to do and what to wear.

Where to stay One of Milan’s grande dame hotels, Hotel Principe di Savoia is tucked between the city’s artists’ district of Brera, the fabulous shopping scene of Quadrilatero and Milan’s Stazione Centrale railway station. With an interior aesthetic that fuses elegance with Art Deco features, the Presidential Suite is a classic example of Milanese luxury. Three spacious bedrooms and bathrooms are joined by a wrap-around balcony and private terrace on the hotel’s 10th fl oor, with views of Piazza della Repubblica and the rooftops of Milan. But, the pièce de résistance is your own swimming pool and spa, decked out in old Pompeii-style with frescoes and soaring columns fi t for an emperor. Presidential Suite from $18,000 per night. Marvelous Milan Arguably the most recognizable of Milan’s architectural icons, the Duomo is a magni fi cent Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. Five hundred years in the making (construction began in 1386 and was only completed in 1965), you can appreciate why: more than 3,500 statues and 135 spires make up this great building. Climb to the top of the stairs where you can walk along the roof (it’s safer than it sounds) for some close-ups of the spires and unbeatable views over Milan. Next, head to Castello Sforzesco. Built in the 15th century, the castle was once the city’s hub of power but today houses multiple museums and archives covering everything from ancient art to Renaissance history. Take a stroll around the beautiful grounds, and the otherwise busy Milan will feel worlds away. Of course, no trip to Milan would be complete without seeing one of the most famous works of art: The Last Supper . An experimental piece by Leonardo da Vinci, it has stood the test of time despite being a victim of neglect. Napoleon’s soldiers turned the monastery in which the artwork was housed into a stable in the 19th century, and during World War II the monastery was bombed, reducing the surrounding walls to rubble. Nevertheless, the artwork remains (although how much is the original painting is a hot topic of debate) and can be found at Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano. Make sure to book tickets well in advance as they sell out quickly. To conclude your sojourn, make sure you pick up a souvenir (read: handbag). Italy is the epicenter of high fashion, and Milan is its crown jewel. Start at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, opposite the Duomo, where the soaring arcade of stone and glass make for a grand entrance. Inside you can fi nd international favorites like Fendi, Prada, Gucci and Dior alongside smart eateries. Just next door, La Rinascente is your one-stop shop for high-end purchases (and it has a great view of the Duomo from the rooftop). For something a little di ff erent, visit Peck. A benchmark of Milanese gastronomy since 1883, this charming food hall is a haven for authentic products. As you wander around the city, Casadei’s loafers are a stylish yet comfortable companion. Wear with a classic Dolce & Gabbana bag for a put-together but practical look. Finally, keep time with a heritage Italian watch from Bulgari.

Italian eats On the seventh fl oor of the Armani Hotel Milano, Armani/Ristorante (armanihotelmilano.com) boasts thrilling vistas of the city, from the unmissable Duomo cathedral to the Porta Nuova, thanks to its fl oor-to ceiling windows. The menu brings seasonal ingredients to the table, taking you on a journey of Italy with an Eastern twist — think ramen alongside ravioli and sea bass with wasabi and yuzu. Simple, informal and retro are three words that come to mind to describe Trippa (trippamilano.it) . But it’s in these unassuming haunts where some of the best Italian food can be found. Its traditional and yet innovative menu uses the best quality ingredients, earning it a coveted Bib Gourmand. Uncomplicated, the restaurant has an old trattoria feel with a fresh look and a skillful young chef behind the scenes. The menu changes daily, with pasta, risotto, meat and fi sh specials. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for the signature dish of tripe ( trippa is tripe in Italian). But be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Pair a classic Italian dinner with an equally Italian out fi t. This dress (left) from Versace is simple but oh-so-elegant. And complement it with a fun cocktail ring from Milan-born high jewelry house Buccellati.

JUST ADD OIL

La Mer The Renewal Oil 15ml, $95, worlddutyfree.com

The use of oil in beauty and skincare is nothing new — the ancient Greeks and Romans bathed in olive oil;

Cleopatra used olive and sesame oils on her skin; Rita Hayworth applied oil to her signature red locks. While oils can be useful to help skin that is on the drier side, they can also help with dullness and nourishment — oils are occlusive, meaning they create a ‘seal’ on your skin to prevent water loss. La Mer’s The Renewal Oil is rich yet light and smells utterly divine (it’s a must for any long-haul flights when your skin needs a little extra love). Olaplex’s No7 Bonding Oil has a cult following for good reason — the highly concentrated oil repairs damaged hair and can provide heat protection up to 450°F. It’s best to use on damp hair; be sparing — a little goes a very long way. The Purifying Body Oil from hotel brand Aman has a blend of vitamin C, kombu oil (a marine algae) and arnica, an herb that is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

AMAN NEW YORK NEW YORK

Housed in the glorious Beaux-Arts Crown Building, former home of the Museum of Modern Art, the sky-high addition to the Aman portfolio sits on the roaring crossroads of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, overlooking the lush and grandiose expanse of Central Park. Ask a local and they’ll tell you this is where New York comes to life — where tourists marvel over the madness of the city; where lovebirds enjoy pre museum dates; where performers chase a lucky buck; where the movies and shows of Hollywood take their cue. It’s everything Aman is not: exuberant madness. So it’s only natural that a peaceful oasis preaching a calming Asian philosophy pops up in the center of all that frenzy.
