What a difference a year makes. Or, in the Covid-19 era, what a difference a few years makes. Our annual Hotels, Resorts and Spas guide was in a different place last year. Compiling a travel- focused supplement in the midst of a pandemic is no easy feat, but we aimed to spark inspiration and look at travel in a different way — namely, staying

local and exploring all that is within easy reach. Now, that has a renewed importance too. In the face of climate change, lessening our impact on the environment by championing staycations and choosing more sustainable hotels is paramount. At the time of writing, the COP26 climate change conference was taking place in Glasgow, Scotland. Over 190 world leaders met to discuss climate change and seek ways to tackle the critical problem. The main objectives are to “secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach,” with countries pledging to cut methane emissions, phase out coal and restrict deforestation. While the event has been tinged with the kind of controversy one can only expect from such a crucial and seemingly insurmountable battle, it is a topic that cannot be taken too lightly and trickles down into everyday life — challenging brands and individuals to think differently. Take ‘The Whisky Smugglers’ — two brothers from New Zealand who took on a wild swimming excursion through a treacherous whirlpool in Scotland to raise funds for a conservation charity. Oh, and they undertook this challenge with bottles of whisky strapped to them, which will be blended and sold as a limited-edition expression. Elsewhere in this issue, you can find our expert reviews on some of the world’s finest hotels. In the BVI, Richard Branson’s Necker Island is now back (and more sustainable) than ever, following a string of disasters. Idle Rocks is an idyllic spot, located in a charming fishing village in Cornwall, England. Many flock here for the sea air and even better seafood — head chef (and Cornwall native) Dorian Janmaat joined the hotel after eight years at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Expect seriously local produce and a menu that celebrates all things seaside. Prefer to take to the high seas? Dardanella is a 121-ft explorer yacht, built by prestigious Dutch shipyard Vitters. What makes her unique, though, is that she has a dedicated on-board wellness practitioner who creates bespoke programs that harness the healing powers of the ocean. Or, if you’re looking to reconnect with family and friends after a long stint spent apart, VistaJet’s ‘Surprise Reunion’ package brings loved ones together with a fun itinerary that begins long before takeoff. Wellness on the water
The ocean has restorative properties for many, and there’s no better way to feel at one with the ocean than by chartering a yacht that has wellness covered with an onboard practitioner. Dardanella , a privately owned, 121.5-ft yacht, began her life as an oceanic and conservation vessel. Launched by lauded Dutch builder Vitters Shipyard in 1998, she has traversed the globe to some untouched, occasionally inaccessible destinations — from remote Pacific regions such as Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands. While her extensive travel experience means that you can visit some incredible, hard-to-reach locations, what makes her truly unique is her wellness offering. The healing powers of the ocean have been documented throughout history — Victorian doctors extolled the healing effects of cold water for a number of ailments (including melancholy); the ancient Greeks soaked in mineral-rich water (known as ‘the water cure’). Many of us crave time spent out on the water to feel soothed, energized and refreshed, and so it makes sense that Dardanella has an onboard, dedicated practitioner to create bespoke itineraries that harness the healing powers of the ocean. Ayumi Gallagher, a Scottish-Japanese wellness practitioner, oversees Dardanella ’s onboard wellness offering. All programs are created around your individual needs, and combine ancient philosophies of yoga and meditation with modern research-based health and wellness practices and nourishing meal plans. Ayumi also curates programs to complement your activity of choice, be it a Pilates class to prepare for diving, a yoga class to limber up for surfing, or a deep massage after a strenuous hike. Dardanella also has a whole host of toys on board, including kayaks, paddleboards and jet skis, and she has a swim platform so you can leap right into the ocean. After a day of fun in the water, relax in her expansive leisure spaces or dine in the shade of the spacious aft deck. She also has a state-of-the-art entertainment system, including surround sound and a film projector (ideal for an onboard movie night).

Right and below The Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh has partnered with The Macallan to create ‘The Scotch Club’
The ultimate whisky club
What happens when Edinburgh’s most prestigious hotel and Speyside’s most prized whisky brand join forces? The answer is quite possibly the most exclusive whisky club in the world. The historic Balmoral hotel has partnered with fabled whisky distillery The Macallan to unveil ‘The Scotch Club,’ an elite global inner-circle for connoisseurs of the gold stuff. And if you want a space you better move fast — the first 12 members were selected in Fall 2021, leaving just 23 spaces available. The Balmoral is keeping waiting list numbers a closely guarded secret. Members will be granted a bottle residence at SCOTCH, The Balmoral’s world-renowned whisky bar that is home to over 500 single malts; their own personal bottle will be kept under lock and key in one of the sought-after whisky keeps that line the entranceway to the famed whisky emporium. Each
tasting, invitations to whisky masterclasses and special room rates. Cameron Ewen, whisky ambassador and manager of SCOTCH, said: “We want to get to know our members as individuals and deliver an outstanding, memorable occasion on each and every visit to SCOTCH. We have some rare and extraordinary expressions from The Macallan available for the Scotch Club, and I hope that they allow each member to join with their family and friends, and keep the conversations about whisky going for generations to come.” Membership to The Scotch Club starts at £710 (approx. $975) where guests can access their own bottle of The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old. Top-level membership is £17,700 (approx. $24,350) and comes with a bottle of The Macallan Red Collection 40 Years Old. roccofortehotels.com
keep will be personally engraved, allowing members to have their name stitched into the very fabric of the landmark, 120-year-old hotel. Keeping watch over the amber nectar will be The Balmoral’s expert whisky ambassadors, who will be on hand to pour members their selected bottle straight into their own crystal engraved Lalique glass — the ultimate vessel to appreciate the complexities of the legendary single malt. The biggest decision for the chosen 35 will be which premium expression of The Macallan to place in their keep. Options range from The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old, right through to a coveted bottle of The Macallan Red Collection 40 Years Old, an expression that sits at the heart of The Macallan’s limited-edition Red Collection, a selection of single malts created from some of the world’s oldest and rarest casks. For most of us, whisky, wild swimming and the world’s third-largest whirlpool sound like a lethal combination. But not for New Zealand-born brothers Alex and Nick Ravenhall. The whisky- loving duo known as ‘The Whisky Smugglers’ swam the treacherous Corryvreckan Strait between the islands of Jura and Scarba on Scotland’s untamed (and very chilly) west coast. And, if taking the plunge into a huge swirling abyss with near- mythical status wasn’t difficult enough, the Māori brothers completed the swim with multiple bottles of whisky strapped to their bodies. If you care about your single malts then you should care about the environment from which they are made — and ultimately that means caring for our water sources.” The new year will see the brothers take on a swim they’re calling ‘Five Lochs Five Drams.’ “It’s a highland swim through lochs that feed some of the most iconic whisky distilleries,” explains Nick. “Off the back of that, we plan to launch a blended whisky to keep raising money to help make change.” seashepherd.org.nz
Why, you ask? All in the name of charity. The accomplished wild swimmers (who both work in Scotland’s whisky industry) took on the infamous stretch to highlight the vulnerability of the planet’s oceans. The transported whisky is now being blended to be sold as limited-edition expressions to raise funds for the conservation charity, Sea Shepherd New Zealand. Sharing their inspiration, Nick said: “We felt that by smuggling whisky on these epic swims, we might be able to lean into the passion of whisky fans everywhere. There is a big story about the

THE SURPRISE REUNION
It’s no surprise that, given recent events, we’re rediscovering the importance of spending time with loved ones. VistaJet’s ‘The Surprise Reunion’ gives families the chance to come together for a tailor-made adventure in the sky. VistaJet has a history of creating memorable, one-of-a-kind experiences — its ‘Adventures in the Sky’ is a collection of extensive travelers' programs designed especially for children (and the young at heart) at high altitude. The latest addition involves a partnership with creative event planners Sharky & George, which VistaJet has worked with for a number of years. The London-based entertainers are specialists in immersive experiences and have created mini-Olympics, survival-themed parties and even shindigs for grown-ups, too.
This new program creates getaways that are custom-designed for each family. The adventure begins pre-flight, where mysterious packages arrive at your front door. From ancient maps to cryptic messages and engraved coins, the trip itinerary and challenge instructions are delivered pre-flight to set the tone. Then, you board one of VistaJet’s fleet (there are 70 jets to choose from), where a series of exciting in-flight activities await. Families playing ‘The Ultimate Quest’ interact with characters on their hunt for hidden maps and clues, and congregate on a private island. Or for those with a competitive streak, the ’Adventure Race Across the Globe’ begins a month before takeoff, when teams collaborate on their tactics and game plan. The week-long
adventure starts in a cozy chalet (in a destination of their choosing), where guests receive photos, videos and challenges, and participate in activities like paramotoring over the peaks, tracking local wildlife with a biologist and dog sledding. While you make your cherished memories, you can rest assured that VistaJet is striving to limit the environmental impact of your trip. The company recently announced that, ahead of industry goals, it will be carbon neutral by 2025. Alongside this, its Sustainability in Aviation pledge gives members the choice to offset their flights, with 80% opting to do so. From $100,000. ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD
As the world seems to get smaller and smaller, thanks to highly connected social media platforms and the internet, it becomes more important to be aware of exactly what time it is in the world’s 24 main time zones. And for those traveling internationally on business or even much- needed pleasure trips, knowing the time around the globe is key. Thankfully, today’s finest watchmakers have the answer: world time watches. Yes, there are dual and triple time-zone watches that let you track time in one or two zones, but the world timers are a step above those when it comes to complex horology. These watches feature a secondary ring on the dial, or sometimes on the bezel, that depicts the names of 24 cities — one from each of the world’s main time zones. The wearer only needs to set the time indication for the corresponding city, and the rest is easy. Take a glance at the watch and know what time it is in an instant. No calculations necessary.
World time watches are more difficult to make, especially those with the city ring on the dial, because the space between the dial and the ring is so tiny that the watchmakers have to be incredibly exacting so that no friction occurs when changing the city ring or the precision of the watch could suffer. Typically, world time watches retail for about $10,000, with many of the finest selling for upwards of $50,000. Here we look at a selection with prices that range across the board.
BREGUET CLASSIQUE HORA MUNDI 5717 This 43mm 18-karat rose gold Classique Hora Mundi 5717 watch from Breguet is a study in elegance and sophistication. The world cities are on a lower rotating chapter ring that is visible via an aperture at 6:00. At 12 o’clock on the dial is the corresponding date indication for that city via another rotating ring beneath the dial. The self-winding 362-part movement offers an instant-jump time zone with synchronized date, day/night indication and city. The day/night is displayed via the sun/moon disk at 4 o’clock on the dial. The depiction of the map on the dial is created in gold with hand- painted oceans. $78,900, breguet.com
JAEGER-LECOULTRE MASTER CONTROL GEOGRAPHIC
Swiss watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre has long created its Master Control series of precise, technical tool watches. The Master Control Geographic watch is a prime example. Crafted in stainless steel with an automatic self-winding movement, the 40mm world time watch with shimmering blue dial offers date, second time zone, hours, minutes and time in 24 zones. It also offers a secondary chapter ring that displays time in 24-hour indication to differentiate night and day in the different cities. $13,100, jaeger-lecoultre.com

BULGARI OCTO ROMAWORLDTIMER Swiss watch brand Bulgari makes owning a world timer a real possibility thanks to the Octo Roma Worldtimer crafted in stainless steel. Powered by a new 261-part integrated movement developed in-house, the watch is ultra-thin and comfortable on the wrist. The hours, minutes and seconds are in the center, with two chapter rings surrounding it: one each for the 24-hour display and the world’s main cities. The brand’s watchmakers used a few cities representative of their time zones that are atypical, including Rome (spelled Roma for the name of the watch) instead of Paris. The watch features a transparent sapphire case back for viewing the movement. $8,550, bulgari.com
IWC TOP GUN PILOT’S WATCH TIMEZONER Brand new to the IWC Schaffhausen lineup, this Top Gun Pilot’s Watch Timezoner is crafted in the brand’s proprietary, high-tech Ceratanium (a mix of titanium and ceramic for lightness and scratch resistance) with a city bezel ring made of ceramic. The world time is adjusted simply by pushing down on the bezel. This marks the first time a Top Gun Pilot’s watch boasts this complication. It is powered by an in-house-made IWC movement with Pellaton winding system. Just 150 pieces will be made per year. $16,000, iwc.co
PATEK PHILIPPE REF. 5230G WORLD TIME Always insisting on aesthetics and readability, Patek Philippe does not disappoint with its Ref. 5230G World Time watch. Crafted in 18-karat white gold with a hand-lacquered, hand- guilloched center dial in charcoal, this 38.5mm watch is highly coveted by collectors because of its design ethos and wearability. It is powered by an in-house-made self-winding movement with 239 parts and 48 hours of power reserve. The caliber 240 HU holds two patents and boasts a Spiromax® balance spring and Gyromax® balance. It carries the Patek Philippe Seal. $52,040, patek.com
CHOPARD L.U.C TIME TRAVELER ONE Turning to a monochromatic color scheme for its L.U.C Time Traveler One watch, Chopard creates this world timer in a limited edition of 250 pieces in ceramized grade 5 titanium. The 42mm watch features titanium crowns (reinforced with ceramic) that enable the wearer to change the city ring. This watch boasts an inner ring that indicates the date. It is powered by a manufacture-made L.U.C mechanical movement, with automatic winding and 291 individual components, that is a COSC-certified chronometer. A transparent sapphire caseback allows for viewing of the movement. $15,500, chopard.com

TRUE COLORS
BREITLING CHRONOMAT AUTOMATIC 36 In its heretofore typical collections, Breitling has been known for its use of bold yellow, orange, blue, green and red. But fans of the brand have been witnessing a renaissance of sorts as the brand gets incredibly chic and trendy with its most recent unveilings of capsule collections. Borrowing from the fashion industry, Breitling’s idea of the capsule collections keeps the line fresh and appealing. One of the newest capsules is the Breitling Chronomat Automatic 36mm series made with colorful dials such as this one with a mint-green hue. Crafted in stainless steel with a diamond bezel and steel Rouleaux bracelet, the watch is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement that is a COSC-certified chronometer — deeming it able to keep up with any active lifestyle in terms of heat, humidity and other factors while still maintaining precision. It boasts Super-LumiNova indexes and hands. $8,650, breitling.com For decades, the watch world has been all about the noble metals, as well as stainless steel and even titanium. Dials have traditionally been champagne, ivory or silver in hue, with a real nod toward blue, green and maybe even a touch of red in the past few decades. Not anymore. Today’s finest watchmakers are anteing up when it comes to color, especially when it comes to Métiers d’Arts watches and sporty timepieces for women. Even better, many of the newest pieces are unisex — making them quite in demand.

The background of the haute horlogerie watch is a lively and colorful rendition of the hummingbird using a plique-à-jour enameling process that dates back 1,500 years. It is akin to a miniature stained-glass window on the wrist. Each section of translucent enamel is outlined in gold and then filled in by hand and fired multiple times. The 35mm watch is incredibly time-consuming to make, and just eight pieces will be made. Each is set with 100 diamonds on the bezel and lugs. $54,600, jaquet-droz.com

The automatic CRMA2 in-house-made caliber allows for viewing of certain moving parts. The art-deco-inspired watch exudes a sophisticated yet whimsical appeal. $163,000, richardmille.com

This Big Bang One Click Blue Sapphire Diamonds watch boasts a semi- openworked, in-house-made HUB1710 mechanical movement and no dial to allow for a look at the mechanics inside. The watch is crafted in a proprietary blue sapphire case with an almost transparent look, while the bezel is set with 42 diamonds and the strap is made of a matching blue rubber material. Just 200 pieces of the 39mm watch will be made. $79,000, hublot.com

AMSTERDAM
Marrying luxury hotels and restaurants with breathtaking historical architecture, world- leading art galleries and museums, and beautiful green parks, there is so much the city of Amsterdam has to offer. The vibrant and electric atmosphere is like no other. Narrow streets are lined with vintage boutiques and high-end designer stores (often flanked by bicycles leaning precariously against them); stylish locals amble through the streets in vintage designer finds; nomads wander across the iconic bridges. Whether you come for the shopping, the scenery or the art, it will never fail to impress.
Dutch delights The best ways to discover the city are by bike and boat. With more bikes than people, it’s the transport of choice for both locals and visitors. Cycle to the Vondelpark first and head to the pretty rose garden (there are more than 70 types of roses planted in hexagonal beds), then on to the famous Vondelpark Open Air Theatre where, if you’re lucky, you might catch an impromptu show. Spend an afternoon on a private saloon boat and explore the Unesco World Heritage Site as it was intended — by water. Board Welmoed , a classic cruiser that was built in 1932 for a doctor who used the vessel to visit patients. Create your own itinerary and stop wherever you wish, or opt for a dinner cruise for a romantic evening. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a frequent flyer, everything in Amsterdam seems a bit more magical when viewed from the water. The weather can be unpredictable, so keep yourself warm and dry with a trench coat from Another Tomorrow. privateboat.amsterdam
Amsterdam is famous for its galleries and museums. Head to Museumplein for the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and marvel at the Dutch masters. While you peruse the Rembrandts, don a pair of classic Chelsea boots from Bottega Veneta for that off-duty style. rijksmuseum.nl; vangoghmuseum.nl Looking for something different? Restaurant De Kas
Local dining Since opening its doors in 2001, De Kas has operated under the concept of ‘from plant to plate.’ Growing around 300 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs, the culinary team harvests them in the morning to present on your plate in the afternoon. The menu changes daily — go there every day for a week and you would be unlikely to get the same dinner twice. A truly remarkable and modern way to dine. If you want to experience the city like a local, a typical Dutch pastime is boating along the canals with friends, and enjoying champagne and oysters. Being so close to water makes the oysters plentiful, so head to one of many fishmongers in the city to enjoy. restaurantdekas.com

Chlorophyll is the latest trend in skin care, with good reason. It boasts a long list of benefits — it’s rich in vitamins, able to reduce inflammation, and has many anti-aging properties. It has been a wellness staple for some time (Reese Witherspoon adds drops to her water), but has now entered the skincare market. While applying it topically doesn’t have quite the same effect as ingesting does, it still packs a pretty punch. Despite being relatively new in the skincare world, chlorophyll is found in algae, which has been a key ingredient in skincare products for years. Chlorophyll is that rich, green pigment that gives plants and algae their rich color. High in vitamins A, C, E and K, chlorophyll can aid in making your skin appear radiant and rejuvenated. Visibly reducing the appearance of dark spots and fine lines, its antioxidant properties protect your skin from free radicals that cause these signs of premature aging. And since chlorophyll is anti-inflammatory, it can be suitable for those with sensitive skin. Its antibacterial properties are what make it so effective for acne-prone skin; it helps to regulate sebum levels. THE GREEN LIGHT
