PRAETOR 600: CERTIFIED OUTPERFORMANCE.

Announcing the certified Praetor 600, the world’s most disruptive and technologically advanced super-midsize aircraft that leads the way in performance, comfort and technology.

Unveiled at NBAA in October 2018 and now certified by ANAC, FAA and EASA, the Praetor 600 did not just meet initial expectations, it exceeded them. Named for the Latin root that means “lead the way,” the Praetor 600 is a jet of firsts. It is the first super-midsize jet certified since 2014. The first to fly beyond 3,700 nm at M0.80. The first with over 4,000 nm range at LRC. The first with full fly-by-wire. The first with Active Turbulence Reduction. The first with a cabin altitude as low as 5,800 feet. elite traveler FALL 2019 11

Welcome Nomatter your age, fall’s arrival always brings the urge to upgrade your wardrobe (blame childhood’s yearly back-to-school shopping trips), so it is the perfect timing for our inaugural Style issue. We have scoured the globe to bring you the best fashion, watches and jewelry for men and women. From sparkling gems in Jaipur, India to Spanish fashion inMadrid’s sunny streets and Fendi’s impeccable Italian craftsmanship in Tuscany, we have left no stone unturned in our search for the finest, and most timeless, pieces out there. In our fashion shoot, we take fall’s ultimate runway trend, monochrome dressing, to the bucolic British countryside’s historic Monkey Island Estate, which recently reopened as a luxury hotel and chic hideaway in Bray, England. We also speak to designer extraordinaire Christian Louboutin about his obsession with travel and his affinity for Bhutan, where he designed a collection with local artisans (aptly named LouBhutan) to celebrate the country’s artistic traditions. The third edition of the year’s Top 50Watches presented a particular challenge to Roberta Naas, our contributing timepiece editor and one of the world’s preeminent watch journalists. As watchmakers continually strive to outdo each other, narrowing down the field to 50 watches is a tough job, requiring multiple trips to Switzerland to see the watches in person. If you’re looking to get away rather than shop, take to the high seas with our Top Yacht Itineraries. You’ll find exclusive journeys and the yachts to charter in each destination. More of a landlubber? Jet off to the city by the bay with our roundup of the Top Suites in San Francisco. We also have guides to the capital of country music, Nashville; an exploding metropolis in China, Macau; a sultry Spanish city, Seville; and a relaxing island vacation spot, the Seychelles. Did your favorite watch make the list? Are there any destinations you want to knowmore about? As always, you can reach us at editorial@elitetraveler.com

Hennessy’s new home

Hennessy and Louis Vuitton have joined forces to create a customizable trunk that can hold four magnums of Hennessy Paradis Impérial

Hennessy and Louis Vuitton are making a case (sorry) for rendering wine cellars and bar carts obsolete with the new Hennessy Paradis Impérial Trunk by Louis Vuitton. The trunk was designed to celebrate the relaunch of this crown jewel in Hennessy’s portfolio with a completely new and exquisite multifaceted crystal decanter, designed by renowned Tel Aviv-born artist Arik Levy. This XO cognac first debuted in 2011 and remains one of the most prized expressions for cognac connoisseurs and, despite a new exterior look, Paradis Impérial’s golden-hued elixir, made of the finest eaux-de-vie , remains the same. From afar, the trunk looks like a classic Louis Vuitton trunk, but instead of a hollow interior, its leather-lined doors open to unveil compartments that fit four magnums of Hennessy Paradis Impérial and bar accessories for serving up to 18 people. Also included is a removable smaller trunk, called the Nomad Case, that houses a single bottle of Hennessy Paradis Impérial. Remove it from the larger trunk for smaller gatherings or bring it wherever the celebration takes you. The trunk is covered in Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram logo, albeit in an understated black, emblazoned with the Hennessy seal and a stripe on the front. While the trunk isn’t a limited edition, each must be specially ordered and has customization options. The Nomad Case is available for purchase on its own, as are the bottles of Hennessy Paradis Impérial. Complete trunk from $273,000. Contact rarecognaccollection@ hennessy.com, hennessy.com

STARGAZER FIRST DRIVE: BUGATTI CHIRON SKY VIEW

Sliding into the not quite camel — but darker than sand — supple leather seat feels like being handed the reins to a realized spaceship. There are no touchscreens in the Chiron but rather mindfully placed, if not inordinately large, buttons. Bugatti engineers claim they’re an integral part of the timeless beauty that runs throughout the brand’s portfolio. In reality, these switches are a pragmatic return to an analog system often bypassed in the luxury segment. Garnering 1,500 hp thanks to a 16-cylinder, eight-liter engine newly developed by Bugatti, the Chiron utilizes four new, larger turbochargers created to maximize performance at any speed. A common byproduct of turbochargers is a momentary lag in speed or control; Bugatti’s two-stage turbocharging aims to eradicate that nuisance. They’re also, not coincidentally, loud as hell, should the car’s very existence not be enough of a statement. The newly introduced Sky View consists of two fixed-glass panels incorporated into the roof above both the driver and passenger. Each panel is four layers. Every one addresses a different issue: undesirable wind noise; infrared radiation removal; tinting for privacy; and tinting for the filtering of UVA and UVB rays. Sky View also adds about an inch of headroom and, in what Bugatti engineers call a side effect, the panels’ laminated design improves the rigidity of the roof panels. Behind the two-tone wheel, the vehicle is just as particular as its architects.

Garnering 1,500hpfroma 16-cylinder, eight-liter engine, theChironutilizes fournew, larger turbochargers tomaximize performance at any speed discreetly feature its particular shade, coined ‘ la vie en bleu .’ Found on the launch control or the engine start button, the historically French racing color is meant to inexorably link the driver, via allusion, to the company’s 110-year history. It’s also one of the few color-based features that comes standard in each Chiron. The Molsheim, France-based brand prides itself on creating custom-configured vehicles, meaning no two are ever the same. From $3.06m, bugatti.com While driving it certainly presents a sense of occasion, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone that calls the Chiron a daily driver, or even a weekend warrior. A surplus of horsepower means this ferociously capable automobile is keen on having perpetual pavement (exclusively so) under its tires. Eager to incorporate a sliver of continuous history, Bugatti continues to

The Speedback Silverstone Edition is a bespoke automobile from David Brown Automotive in England

SILENT AND STREET LEGAL PININFARINA BATTISTA ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

For those unfamiliar with the finer milestones in car design, the name Pininfarina sounds oddly proverbial. Born Battista Farina, the postwar design magnate and coachbuilder focused on the drafting and construction of new car bodies for the likes of Ferrari and Alfa Romeo throughout his career. At home, he was the youngest boy of 11 children and quickly garnered the nickname ‘ pinin ’ (Italian slang for short). Merging work and home later in life, he formally added Pinin to his last name at age 68; his entire family followed suit. Since then, the Pininfarina design house has outfitted Jaguars and Rolls-Royces for nearly six decades, and more recently partnered with Pirelli and Rimac. In his honor, Automobili Pininfarina named its first hypercar the Battista. The 1,900 hp, fully electric coupe can outsprint Formula 1 cars and is certainly the most powerful Italian supercar ever created, prancing horses and raging bulls included. The Battista’s 120kWh

battery delivers power to four electric motors — one at each wheel — and boasts a range of 280 miles. Imagine if McLaren, Ferrari and Lamborghini had a distant relative (they more or less do, considering the cadre of designers and engineers tapped for this project). With a carbon-fiber body and glass-enclosed, teardrop-shaped cabin, the Battista traces some surely recognizable lines. Its slender front wing is offset by a voluptuous set of fenders exaggerating each tire. A trio of forward vents push air down and out, then pull it back via triangular inlets behind the doors. Inside, a pair of touchscreens on either side of the steering wheel will make those accustomed to the Bloomberg Terminal feel right at home. Each of the 150 zero-emissions hypercars will require a month to be hand-assembled at Carrozzeria Pininfarina. From $2.2m, automobili-pininfarina.com

JET AGE MEETS DIGITAL ERA DAVID BROWN AUTOMOTIVE SPEEDBACK SILVERSTONE EDITION Performance-led grand tourer meets continental cruiser in the Speedback Silverstone Edition, a bespoke automobile from David Brown Automotive, a Silverstone, England-based small-batch manufacturer. Employing the original chassis, transmission and suspension from a Jaguar XKR, Brown Automotive then custom-builds the aluminum body to house the 601 hp, 5.0 liter supercharged V8 vehicle. With its sleek, extended side skirts, enlarged side vents and prolonged hood, the Speedback could easily find its way into a James Bond film. In fact, 007 drove the XKR in Die Another Day , and the Aston Martin DB5 — an inspiration for the Speedback’s body design — appeared in Goldfinger. A tribute to the GT racers of yore, this vehicle is purpose-built to travel long distances — hence the two-seater passenger configuration with a custom-fitted, made-to-measure luggage set in place of rear seats — and handles the occasional country road with ease. Oozing vintage glamour and charisma, each Speedback requires 8,000 hours over nine months to construct, including the eight weeks the company needs to paint the exterior. (As a point of comparison, a Rolls-Royce Ghost takes roughly 450 hours to assemble.) Brogued and embroidered leathers as well as open-pore, scorched-wood veneers decorate the plush interior of the Speedback, while jet-inspired exhaust tips amplify the race- tuned engine. To fully engross the buyer and seduce younger generations, the company employs an interactive online customer portal. From the moment a car is ordered, the future owner can view photos, videos and a personalized blog with continuous updates. It’s worth noting that the Speedback isn’t currently homologated for North America, and there is a near year-long waiting list. It is limited to 10 production cars. THE SPORTY PRINCESS

Princess Yachts, the England-based yacht builder, has launched a new sports yacht, the R35. Working in tandem with Italian car-design brand Pininfarina and decorated Olympian and America’s Cup competitor Ben Ainslie’s BAR Technologies, the R35 uses this race-bred technology to hit top speeds of 50 knots. Using a combination of a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque (loads of stress are supported through the yacht’s body) hull, aerodynamic air blades and direct injection V8 engines, the R35 is the fastest yacht that Princess has ever built and one of the fastest yachts on the water today. Inside is a calm area flooded with natural light through the windows and a skylight. There is a wet room on board, a dining area that can be converted into a double bed and a

galley kitchen, so you’re not compromising on creature comforts when you’re on board and underway. Choose from five metallic paint finishes for the exterior and three interior schemes inspired by the yacht’s automobile partner. Back up top, in addition to the seats in the helm station, passengers are able to relax in the seating area surrounding a dining table. And though you’re traveling at an impressive speed, don’t fret about your sunglasses falling off and your hair looking a mess — ingenious side wind deflectors and the profile of the windscreen ensure airflow is directed above the cockpit. Aft of this area is a sunpad for reclining or drying off after a refreshing dip. From $640,000. Contact sales@princess.co.uk, +44 148 922 3806, princessyachts.com

SeaDream has added a third megayacht to its fleet — Innovation is three times the size of the other ships

SeaDream Innovation sets sail

They say the third time’s the charm, and apparently SeaDream Yacht Club believes in this. For the first time since its founding in 2001, the ultra-luxury cruise line is expanding by adding a third ship to its fleet in September 2021: SeaDream Innovation . In her first year, Innovation will sail to every continent on a voyage that includes 200 ports in 49 countries to introduce the company’s global yachting experiences. “SeaDream Innovation is currently the most advanced megayacht being built,” Atle Brynestad, founder, chairman and CEO of SeaDream, tells Elite Traveler . “We are excited to expand our fleet for the first time in the company’s history, and continue to define luxury travel and build a vessel that has no limits.” This new ship, built by Damen Shipyards in Romania, is three times the size of the other ships in weight — 15,600 gross tons (gt) compared to SeaDream I and II at 4,300 gt each. Despite her weight, the 508-ft ship (more akin to a megayacht than your average cruise ship) remains intimate — there are only 110 suites and she has the fleet’s first-ever, one-to-one, guest-to-crew ratio. Innovation will feature the same culinary excellence and luxe programming as her sister ships, including the impeccable service for which SeaDream is so revered, paired with fine dining, unique excursions and luxurious outdoor spaces, such as Balinese Dream Beds designed exclusively for sleeping under the stars.

Global voyages include the North and South Pole as well as Norway, Southeast Asia, Oceania and more, encouraging cruise guests to explore intimate corners of the globe through access to smaller ports that larger ships don’t have. Reservations are being accepted for Innovation ’s inaugural 70-day voyage from London to Ushuaia, Argentina. You will travel to Europe, the US and Caribbean, Central and South America (including Patagonia’s Glacier Alley) and wrap up your journey in Antarctica. seadream.com

SPLENDID SUITE

When the fifth ship in Regent Seven Seas Cruises fleet, Seven Seas Splendor , takes her maiden voyage in 2020, luxury will reach even higher on the seas thanks to the ship’s new Regent Suite, considered the most opulent cruise suite ever built. The 4,443-sq-ft suite (bigger than many four-bedroom homes) forgets no detail, from the $200,000 Hästens Vividus bed to an Italian-marble, in-suite spa with floor-to- ceiling shower windows to a

mini pool on the private front balcony. Tillberg Design of Sweden created the grand decor that features golden chandeliers, exotic woods, Italian marble and specially curated pieces of art. Bombardier's Global 7500 aircraft is the longest, largest and fastest business-class jet

The all-new Bombardier Global 7500 takes flight

To date, Bombardier’s Global 7500 aircraft has the most superlatives of any business-class jet: At just over 54 ft, it is the longest; it is the industry’s only purpose-built jet with four fully customizable living spaces, making it the largest; and, perhaps most important, it's the fastest, reaching speeds up to 710 mph with a range up to 7,700 nm. In fact, the jet broke speed records in March when traveling between Los Angeles and New York, and again fromWhite Plains, New York to Luton, UK, as well as completing the longest-range business-jet flight in history when it traveled 8,152 nm nonstop from Singapore to Tucson, Arizona. The Global 7500 seats up to 19 passengers, and you can design each cabin however you wish. There's even the option of a surround-sound movie theater and your choice of furniture, such as a TV stand, that would make just as much sense in your home’s living room as it does on your aircraft; a stateroom with en-suite bathroom (stand-up shower included) and ample storage space; and a functional dining area that connects across the width of the cabin so you can enjoy six-person dinners in the sky. No matter how long you travel, you will certainly be well-rested thanks to the new Soleil lighting system , aviation’s first-ever, circadian-rhythm-based lighting system featuring Dynamic Daylight Simulation technology: Program the time at your arrival destination and the lighting will subtly mimic the sun’s position in the

sky, helping to reduce jet lag and boost energy. By night, the lighting changes to increase the production of melatonin and encourage restful sleep. The crew benefits, too, as there’s a dedicated crew suite near the galley so they remain rested during long-haul flights. The list goes on: There are ultra-large windows, expedited turbo heating and cooling change the cabin temperature within minutes, and optimized cabin pressurization relieves jet lag. Lastly, Bombardier Global 7500 is the launch for the company’s patented new Nuage seats, designed in collaboration with industrial designers. Shockingly, this is the first complete seat redesign in the private aviation space in more than 30 years. The seat isn’t connected to a track; instead, it sits on a floating base with a centered swivel axis, creating fluid movement. It has a tilted headrest, a deeper, more comfortable recline via a tilt-link system and an armrest with a 45-degree ergonomic slope. The Global 7500 doesn’t neglect the details; after all it is an aircraft of ‘firsts:’ The plane comes with the first-ever steam oven and boiling kettle in aviation history. After the 7500 received its FAA certification in November 2018, the first delivery of the plane was made in December 2018, and 15 to 20 planes are set for delivery this year. $72.8m, businessaircraft.bombardier.com

VELOCITY BLACK Velocity Black is an invite-only, digital members’ club for the cash-rich but time-poor traveler. The brainchild of two former finance professionals, Zia Yusuf and Alex McDonald, the app was born from their desire to make the most of their valuable free time. The app has a one-minute response time, so you can request information on a particular trip at any time of the day and quickly connect with an advisor to plan your adventure: Charter a plane, book your favorite suite in your favorite hotel, reserve a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant or try something new. There’s a 10-day trek through the Himalayas to track the rarely seen snow leopard; Velocity Black works with the national park and rangers, and uses satellite technology to make sure you have the highest chance of seeing the notoriously elusive animal. PACK IT UP

Luggage space on a private aircraft is limited. Larger jets such as the Bombardier Global 7500 naturally have more space (see more on p30), but if you’re traveling with a full house, fitting everyone’s suitcase onboard can be tricky — especially if you’re taking ski or golf equipment. Enter Briggs & Riley with a solution: Its suitcases have a patented technology that allows for up to 33 percent more room. It is extremely simple to use (so simple, in fact, that the instructions only have two steps), with a sturdy lever at each end of the suitcase that you extend before packing and, once your suitcase is full, you push down and voilà — extra room for your belongings without taking up all that precious cargo space. The compression also means wrinkle-free clothes and, since there are no trolley handlebars inside the bag, you get an almost completely flat surface to pack. I tried the Sympatico Expandable Spinner suitcase on a recent trip to Bordeaux and could easily add four bottles of wine to my already-full case (as it would be criminal to not bring home a bottle or two from the renowned wine region). Choose from hard-sided or soft-sided in a variety of sizes (or you can choose the best-suited case for you based on the number of days you’ll be traveling) and an extensive menu of features including tablet-friendly bags. The new colors, especially plum, are perfect for fall and monogramming is available to make it your own. The cases also come with a lifetime guarantee, even if damage is caused by the airline or — as the brand itself puts it — damage caused by “any reason whatsoever.” From $544, briggs-riley.com

The Bird Island In the south of Bordeaux surrounded by 190 acres of vineyards lies Les Sources de Caudalie, a halcyon hotel and spa. The setting is picture-perfect: full of pastoral beauty, with ducks occupying the tranquil ponds, horses working in the vineyards and bumblebees buzzing through the pretty, fragrant gardens. You’ll find the signature suite, L’Île aux Oiseaux (The Bird Island), suspended above the largest pond. From the exterior, it resembles a fishing lodge (complete with a small wooden boat) and, like the rest of the resort, is made from repurposed wood. Although it overlooks the pond and the main house, it’s hidden away behind trees so privacy is guaranteed (except from a few ducks and horses). Every three years, Les Sources de Caudalie owner Alice Tourbier partners with a prominent fashion designer to restyle the interiors of L’Île aux Oiseaux —Delphine Manivet andMaisonMartinMargiela have previously added their flair to the suite. This year, couturier Rabih Kayrouz injected a taste of the East. Born in Lebanon in 1973, Kayrouz moved to Paris at 16 to study at the renowned École de la

Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He then worked for Dior and Chanel before opening his own design house. The suite’s interior is astonishingly white, offset with a select few pops of color: vibrant glass bottles sit atop a 1960s Eastern-inspired Guillerme et Chambron wooden wardrobe. The enormous bed occupies the center of the room and overlooks the pond and glorious French countryside— it’s easy to spend an afternoon gazing at the viewwith a glass of wine from the neighboring historic winery, Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The decor is decidedly simple; Kayrouz wanted the suite to be a space to enjoy “the luxury of doing nothing.”With no interior walls or distracting objects, it’s easy to savor the details: the white-washed beams of the ceiling; tin-plated copper tables; and the claw-footed, roll-top bath with a calming painting of Mount Lebanon hanging above. One weaver must create each piece on a hand loom from start to finish to ensure the pattern is consistent throughout

The beautiful Michaelangelo broccatello has a three- dimensional effect

A hand-loom from the 18th century

THE ANTICO SETIFICIO FIORENTINO

In an unassuming building in Florence, a team of dedicated women handcraft some of the world’s most exclusive fabrics using ancient looms. The Antico Setificio Fiorentino (ASF) is a place filled with history, where silk threads are created on a warping machine, the orditoio , designed by Leonardo da Vinci, and semi-mechanical looms from the 19th century are referred to as ‘modern.’ And while it is full of history — and its own story illustrates the rise and fall of the Florentine silk industry, which began in the 14th century when silk cost as much as a house — the artisans and owners are clear that it is not a museum, it is a working factory. It just happens to produce works of art on museum-quality machines in a building built in 1786.

Peter Marino, megayachts, the Uffizi and the Kremlin. The sumptuous fabrics are woven by master weavers on 12 looms from the 18th and 19th centuries. They create beautiful silks, including damask, brocade, lampasso and ermisino , a shimmering taffeta silk, as well as some fabrics that are only produced at ASF, including filaticcio and saia fiorentina . Some of its most special designs are broccatelli , which have an incredible three-dimensional quality that cannot be re-created on modern machines. Working on these antique machines takes time: Hand looms can create just 15 inches a day, and semi-mechanical looms can create up to 33 feet a day. Of course, some of the more complicated patterns take longer; certain damasks yield only two feet a day. anticosetificiofiorentino.com

The story of the ASF could have been like every other fabrica whose orders slowly dwindled until they were forced to close if it weren’t for designer Stefano Ricci. In 2010, he purchased the ASF to safeguard its knowledge and return the craft and its traditional techniques to their former glory. In many ways, it still operates as it always has. Everything is done in-house, from dyeing the threads to creating the warp and the weft, and weaving the fabrics using a system of ancient punch cards that dictate the pattern. All fabrics are made to order, so the ASF can be very daring in its color choices, which tend to be quite bold, reflecting the fabrics’ noble origins. Today, Ricci uses the fabrics in his luxurious clothing line and interior design business. The ASF’s other commissions are quite diverse, including residences designed by

Wine by Kristen Shirley

A SECOND ELEVATION As a vintage-only champagne, Dom Pérignon exclusively releases champagne during a good year. Even with its discerning standards, certain vintages become the stuff of legends. Wine critics hailed 2002 as one of the best vintages of the past 30 years, comparing it to the superb 1996. Seventeen years after this magical, warm growing season in Champagne, Dom Pérignon releases the second plénitude from 2002, also called the P2. The first plénitude from this vintage was released in 2010; it was very highly rated by critics and sought after by collectors. Now, after aging for nearly 15 years in the bottle, Dom Pérignon and Elite Traveler jetted to Hawaii to experience the transformed wine. For Vincent Chaperon, the new chef de cave , P2 is the future for Dom Pérignon. While all Dom Pérignon is aged for at least eight years, the extra maturation for P2 and P3 — a minimum of 14 and 25 years, respectively — reimagines the wine into something new. Chaperon tells us that this time completes the wine, because it brings balance and harmony, two pillars of Dom Pérignon, and “it is a way to complete elements that are not naturally present in the wine.” He explains that in a light vintage, like 1992, time brings intensity and power to the wine. For P2 2002, “you still have the opulence, you can feel it, and now you have so much freshness and precision.” The balance now found in the wine — it’s somehow rich and delicate at the same time — guarantees it will be a favorite among collectors, and will leave us waiting with bated breath to see what 10 more years of maturation will do for the P3. $390, Sherry-Lehmann in New York, +1 212 838 7500, domperignon.com
