CYRUS Klepcys Vertical Skeleton Tourbillon

BLANCPAIN Air Command Blancpain looked to the original scales and functions used in 1950s military aviation and brought them into the modern era in its Air Command watch. It is a re-issue of a chronograph it developed for the US Air Force; a very limited number were offered to American military pilots. The rugged 42.5mmwatch is highly legible thanks to oversized orange-colored Super-LumiNova-coated numerals and markers, and the bi-compax flyback (instantaneous zero reset and restart) chronograph dial design with 12-hour and 30-minute totalizers. Additionally, the actual dial size is larger than the original, and the sapphire box-like crystal offers easier viewing. Sporting a tachymeter scale on the outer flange of the sunburst black dial, the watch displays hours, minutes and central seconds. It also has a bi-directional ratcheted countdown rotating bezel with ceramic inserts. The rotor of the self-winding high-frequency (5 Hz) watch is shaped like an aircraft propeller and visible via the sapphire caseback. $19,800 in stainless steel, Blancpain in New York, +1 212 396 1735, blancpain.com Young independent Swiss watch brand Cyrus brings together the beauty of a vertically positioned tourbillon with a fully skeletonized movement in a caliber designed by its technical director and master watchmaker, Jean-François Mojon. Housed in an all-new, 44mm, cushion-shaped case consisting of 26 parts, the movement not only showcases the constantly moving 52-part tourbillon cage, which is set on a vertical axis at a 90-degree angle, but also offers jumping retrograde hours on the left side of the dial, sweeping retrograde minutes, and seconds graduated at five-second intervals on the tourbillon cage. The power- reserve indication is shown through a sphere at 12 o’clock. A specially made, domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the futuristic, three-dimensional movement and dial. A sapphire caseback allows for a back view of the vertical skeleton tourbillon. $194,000 in 18K rose gold, Provident Jewelry in Jupiter, Florida, +1 561 747 4449, cyrus-watches.ch
