Nicaragua Nicaragua is considered one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere but also one of the richest in tropical landscapes, colorful colonial cities and cultur al traditions, all of which make it a good candidate for philantourism. Nicaragua is called “the land of lakes and volcanoes” because of its many lagoons and lakes and the chain of volcanoes that runs
from the north to the south along the country’s Pacific side (of its 50 volcanoes, only seven are considered active). These volcanoes offer tourists a chance to hike, camp and swim in crater lakes. Not to be overlooked is the city of Granada, which is known for preserving some of the finest colonial-era archi tecture in the country. It is also the center of Nicaragua’s commerce and the hub of the country’s tourism growth.
